Paining auctions are investments by bidder usually to be resold later at a profit. It is private property up for bid like most other common and secular inanimate objects. The only people that would take in fancy decor are art museums bidding for pieces. Individuals are investing for a return. Makes perfect sense to me. Its like buying Van Gogh or Monet and getting a good selling price on it as time goes on with an object's staying in good condition
Not everyone works hard for their success. Some are born into wealth. Others do it dishonestly. Politicians, ear marks, and lobbyists-for example. I'm confident the execs from AIG, who STOLE tax payer money to give themselves HUGE bonuses frequent these places often. Would you call that "success" or would you call it scamming the system?
Good to see that while the rest of the world is struggling, these rich assholes are blowing their millions on home decor as if it is pocket change. Lucky bastards.
I'll say it again; hysterical. These auction whores are more entertaining than a comedy movie.

Let's see, 8,500,000 dollars at 98% inflation, comes to...170,000 in gold. Hmm. Don't mind me, I'm just thinking out loud. ;]

You make a point, BUT

two humble observations:
1.) art auctions make coins seem like child's play.
2.) Tobias Meyer reminds me a little of the fictional Crane brothers. I mean that in the highest regard.

Auctions should be classified as a sport. They are just as stressful and certainly get the heart pumping!

The auctioneer is Tobias Meyer. The Head of the Cotemporary Art department at Sotheby's. He usually is the auctioneer in New York.
