the reason why Easy Rock failed at 3XY was because there were two other radio stations on the AM dial in Melbourne with a similar format: 3MP (the No.1 station in Melbourne at the time) and 3AK (which had a more adult contemporary sound). Not to mention Fox FM had a more breezier AC sound but they had some top 40 as well.
this was the beginning of the end for 3XY after changing from a top 40 "hot hits" format. This format only lasted a year before Bay FM bought it out and reverted to hot hits, but the damage was already done.
