I'd guess that an American asked about your heritage. The question of where you can trace your family's roots comes up a lot here (in California, anyway) because everyone is such a mix.

I get a tinge annoyed when I'm in my hometown & get asked "Where are you from? or What's your nationality? or What's your ethnicity?" I'm from California. I'm American. It's the only culture I know
