Funny how people think the amp is the end all/ be all. Sure, it should be acceptable for all sorts of ranges. But the "be all" comes down to your guitar and what kind of p/u's you have. A mexican strat would do fine here...maybe. But have some 85/81 EMGs you will sound completely different. I'd never spend the money they want for an '59 re-issue. It always starts from the source (the guitar) and how you tend to amplify it. That simple.
@harlesslee What this guy must not get, is the fact that the bass, mid and treble knobs do much more than just add bass, mid and treble. It's hard to listen to an amp having been "EQ'd" by someone who doesn't really know what they're doing. Pretty bad when the bridge p/u sounds like a motor-boat.. haha!
To break up the Bassman it has to be very, very loud??? BS!!! Link the two channels, volume 1 at 3,5 and volume 2 at 4,5 and you got yourself a real nice break up without blowing out the windows.
This amp would be know good for home use at all would it ? I was offered a silverface bassman 100 in mint condition at a very good price, it gets to 8 before break up, and it sounds totally awesome, its the best clean sound I have ever head in my life, but its no good for the house, is the reissue any better at 50 watt
@brainstormer9 Because as a bass amp it was always pretty mediocre. By pure accident it happened to sound exceptional as a guitar amp and is now regarded as a classic guitar amp. Marshal originally based it's amplification on the Bassman amp.
it was good for country style bass, as its thin and nasaly (think spaghetti western), compared to other bass amps, so it wasn't for jazz. it was a possibility though that it could have been the speakers. the lack of a 16-18 inch woofer would have not given the deep sound necessary for bass. infact i use a vintage bass cabinets as part of one of my live rigs, its more the speakers that make the bass amp different
I love the sound. Round and full with strat neck pickup. I bought my Peavey classic 30 looking for this sound among others. Not quite there yet...But close.
*heavy sigh* People, treble is your friend. Don't be afraid of brightness. It does not necessarily negate warmth. Sacrificing treble sacrifices clarity, and people will not hear you as well - loud amp or no, your "perceived volume" takes a plunge, and note definition is basically nil.
Also, "jazz tones" may be very warm, but they are not typically *muffled*. Thank you for posting, @gearwire, but sweeping generalities can turn into misinformation fast:S
@sjuozhunki HI There. I have a 1966 Bassman head and cabinet. I have heard about bridging the channels, as you mention but have never seen how this is dome. Can you tell me how it is done? Why does it allow you to get a distorted sound without cranking the amp?
What do people have against bright tones?!? I'll never understand. It's a guitar! It's supposed to sound present and clear! Don't fear the treble knob! Crank it, turn it back if it gets shrill, bring up bass the balance, mids for fullness, then just use the presence control to match the amp to the room. That's how these amps work; that's how amplification *in general* works:S
@gwugluud it would sound pretty good, might not have enough lows or enough headroom to stay clean at loud enough volumes for the bass to be heard, and you'd have to replace the speakers. I've played bass through a silverface bassman head, and it had an amazing ballsy tone, but it wouldn't work for anything like jazz or funk.
@johnnyleetone So the RIs are so directed toward guitar players that they don't even have bass speakers in them now? lol I would actually be using it for garagey, punky and 60s-type stuff. I thought about getting one to have a good tube amp for guitar AND bass, for recording at home, so I wouldn't need to crank it to ten. It would still blow the speakers to play bass at bedroom-level volumes?
@gwugluud I played a Hofner violin bass for two years through this amp (a 2002 reissue) and: 1/ It sounded great. Much better than most modern bass amps, which tend to sound sorta hollow and trebly, unless you go bankrupt and get very high quality (pricey) bass equipment (with at least a tube preamp and a really good EQ), which I couldn´t afford. And, 2/ never had a problem whatsoever, although I tried to be careful and not crank it up to the max. Great amp, man.
@intelsiberia Sweet. Good to hear. Just bought one of these with the intention of using it for both guitar and bass in the studio. I'm sure it's gonna sound awesome with the P-bass at room volumes at least.
@Anorag Add an overdrive pedal. These need to be turned up really loud to get distortion, so an overdrive pedal will help get a distorted tone at a lower volume. Alternately (or additionally) you can have it modified to add a master volume circuit.
