Frankie, where would you recommend I buy some NES and SNES carts online? I'm unfortunately from the N64 generation, and while I have much love and appreciation for the old games I do not own any. Only my cousin had the old systems when I was little. Anyway yeah, I'd love a reply ^^ If you know.
I owned one for about 3 months and at the end of that time the system connection cords broke. This was with gentle care and moderate use.
The connection breaking was only for snes but just recently remains which is the nes part has stopped working forcing me to spend 40 bucks and buy a nes. (note the nes had bent pins and dirty insides making me need to spend 30 more dollars for repair.)
As of now, you can't use a light gun on the Retro Duo. Apparently they've going to come out with an NES adapter for this so that you can use an NES controller or light gun.
Does it run SNES games perfectly? I have a FC Twin I bought years ago, and it doesn't run SNES games smoothly at all. I'm looking for a console that runs them 100% perfect, and I was wondering if the Retro Duo is a buy for this. You know, if it runs as good as Virtual Console or ROM. Speaking about the SNES part, not the NES.
Actually no, it wasn't.... Nintendo's Famicon (Toploader) was a fairly stable NES but the other ones were NOT built to last, they were notorious for gathering dust and you had to open and blow on the system and the cartridge ALOT, in order to get the game running properly. I don't know about the SNES though, that might have been fairly stable.
im looking for a consol that plays both nes and snes, i know there are a few different ones on the market like the fc2 and fc3, which would be the best one to buy? or is there a newer better one?
I disagree. The FC 3 is fine, but not being able to use original SNES controllers is a problem and like all YoBo systems, it doesn't have Castlevania 3 compatibility.
The light gun on the FC 3+ is a joke and it DOES NOT play every game, dont believe what FC tells you, I had an FC 3+ and like many others sold it for a RETRO DUO because unlike FC 3+ the DUO plays all my NES games even imports from Japan and Europe.
@FrankieViturello i just ordered a RETRO DUO :) Can't wait. Thanks for this review. Also how can you tell which version of Super mario rpg works? is there like a symbol or somethin on catridge?
have you heard of the retro duo playing snes games with vertical lines pretty visible on the tv?both composite and s video i can see vertical lines, and on your video it seems you dont have any lines at all,it looks very clear
I think display issues like that are largely to do with the TV that the system is outputting on. Try it on some different sets around your house and see if the lines only display on one.
Frankie, how is your retro duo holding up since you bought it? Are you still satisfied with it? Do nes codes work for it like in super contra? (up up down down ect...) I'm thinking about getting one.
There are no control ports or adapters that allow you to use an original NES controller or Zapper without modifying the controllers to run off a SNES controller output.
Very neat though since it's still basically emulation of the original hardware I'm happy with the convenience of my 4:3 ratio screen laptop, pro audio card and wireless 360 controller.
i wonder wich proccessor they,ve included, eather it,s so unbelieveble how a powerfull proccesor could emulate nes, snes hardware into another hardware in realtime.
i allway,s tout that nes, snes games were allready coded into pc hardware before running, but it seems that all nes, snes roms are still 65c05 based and that also a pc could emulate nes, snes hardware in realtime,
Correction on StarFox...I have an FC Twin with the Yobo Gameware logo on it, and my copy of StarFox works flawlessly on it. I read somewhere that earlier FC Twins with no Yobo logo had some color issues with StarFox.

I have one of these. My biggest complaint is there is some sound distortion in alot of the nes games. including two of my favorites, kirby's adventure and TMNT 2 the arcade game,
I'd rather play a cartridge. Thats why I bought one. As far as 480p. You'll never notice the difference with a nes or snes game. cause the nes was 240p. If any of that mattered to me. I'd play it all on PC. Where it's all free, and better looking then any console can reproduce.
The only problem is a lot of the good games don't get put on the virtual console, so even without the s-video, this is a good buy to play retro games.
If that happens, that'd remove my last excuse not to get one! (unless I hear about some other major problem from the unit or a better model comes out in the meantime)
awesome review! i ordered a white one and got a white one though ;) i love the system, got river city ransom on pause right now as i type this. damn i want a super game boy now. hmmm
The "Bung GBA Flash Cartridge"? They're no longer in production, and the serial port device that flashes the cartridge is tough to get to work on an XP/Vista machine. I bought it from Hong Kong around 1999/2000.
I can confim that the Famicom Disk System will NOT work on a RetroDuo. You will always get Famicom Disk System Error #20. The RAM adapter is not compatible with the video output of the device. If you're looking for a good option to play Famicom Disk games in the US, either import a used Famicom, get an official NES 2 top-loader and a Famicom to NES cartridge adapter OR buy a Messiah brand Generation NEX console. All of those work.
