We have been reading "Into The Wild" in my Lit of the Land class. I must admit, I don't like reading and have a hard time concentrating when I do read. However, after I read the first few chapters of the book, it began to tug on my heart strings. This is such a wonderful story. Chris, you are the true definition of "living your dream". It's sad he passed away at such a young age, but hopefully his story continues to live on. It's really touching. RIP Chris.

I work in a cruise ship terminal..... every week 2000 complete strangers board a ship with all the comforts of a hotel to go to Alaska. Three ships follow eachother up, week after week. This is not Alaska. I just got back from Seldovia, Alaska, which is closer to Chris' Alaska. But I'm not sure I'd want to go much farther north than Seldovia or Kachimak Bay. Why? To prove that I can be free? I can be free right here and now. "You can travel on 10,000 miles and still stay where you are."

Lots of young people run and hide from their dysfunctional families. Many have use drugs and alcohol as an escape / adventure, sometimes with deadly consequences.
This guy used cross country travel and societal abandonment as his drug. He basically overdosed on some delusional notion that he could live a poetic solitary life in the wild unprepared. Sad but true.
Yea well I realized you got to take a break and just go sometimes. People think im stupid for not starting a family buying a house and car I cant afford and just growing old. There is so much out there to expereince. I have traveled all over the US, alaska,canada and now im off to austrailia 3 weeks; no plans just winging it. I guess ill never grow up but at least when im living alone in a box I will always be in those great places in my head.

What also erks me is when people are diagnosed with ADD or ADHD and pumped with drugs! They don't have a diorder they just need more excercise and wide open spaces. These chemical doctors claim they have a cure for everything but all they are doing is inventing new diseases for simple things and pumping with medication they don't need! No wonder more and more people are commiting suicide! Look Around You!!!!!
We are not made to be sitting around and learning things that only help us in the life us humans have made for ourselves! Can anyone say they are truly happy? We should be outdoors learning real life lessons!
A truly beautiful song, and the lyrics (and the movie) do make a point.
But, here's where I feel the message is wrong.
I worked a few years and I think, contributed something to society as a whole and in so doing saved a few bucks and NOW I live in the wilderness, go hunting and fishing, raft rivers, climb mountains, ski and snowshoe, etc, etc. AND I sleep in a warm bed every night and eat well.
What makes young kids think they can do this with no contribution to society first?
people achieve status power and material things because they feel like they need these things to satisfy others in society and show them that you're successful. fuck that, satisfy yourself, live life.
I just can't stop listening to all these songs from the film and just can't stop thinking of him... Chris was a great person, and His history involved my life.. He made me think and I just wanna be like him.. Just feel like leaving everything and going on the road.. And I'm going to try! Now this is my dream: living into the wild, with just nature and beauty of the earh...

@erfegg you do realize that Chris did finish school before he took off on this fantastic journey. It' shaving an education that enables such a sojourn - and in Chris' case, and so sadly unfortunate, it still wasn't successful. Stay in school, don't quit, yet still keep your passion.

Just a thought...Alex did finish school receiving a 4yr degree. Education gives you a reference point, exposure to ideas, society structure. It gives you a starting point for critical thinking. On how the status quo came to it's present state, gives you a launching point to accept it, reject , or battle it. Education is not the enemy, it's what people fail to do with it that is the tragedy. Just a thought. Peace. I oftn wonder what Alex would have done when bck to society.

Is that the film is about how materialistic us human beings are...
we all strive for things, power etc while thinking that these things will give us happiness...
Alex showed us that Happiness comes from being with nature and sharing that sense of connection with others. We all think that we are civilized, but we can never be civilized when we keep ignoring our humanity and the important things in life. Love.

heres a take. what if teh real menaing of this movie was self discovery. TO look within and to see whats happening around in life. Or maybe better. A search for teh truth. I think many(expecially younger ppl)misunderstood the sense of the movie, a bit(even if...everyone is obviously entitled to find his/her own sense to it)...this movie is not about Alaska or nature or going hiking,this stuff is about moments in life...the moment to try and find your own way out of this crazy society and the moment u realize for happiness to be true you have to share it nontheless...u know what he wrote before dieing, that's the truth he found out about while away from everything.
In my opinion,the movie/song is about leaving the terrible sadness that reigns our selfish souls in this "crazy society" where's a "deep" hole...our utopia of a happy, little world lived in freedom and peace is falling apart...and we have to survive,to keep going...we have to live on the edge..we have to make the perfect choice for OUR LIFES...

i can understand his happiness in fact i think i do. i love 2 go hiking up big hills. its just like he says in the movie its just about being there in that special momment in time. just the way the view looks at that momment the way the shadows cast on the ground and on the hills. just the peacefullness of it all. the sound of the wind and the coolness of the breaze on ur face.

Just a thought...Alex did finish school receiving a 4yr degree. Education gives you a reference point, exposure to ideas, society structure. It gives you a starting point for critical thinking. On how the status quo came to it's present state, gives you a launching point to accept it, reject , or battle it. Education is not the enemy, it's what people fail to do with it that is the tragedy. Just a thought. Peace. I oftn wonder what Alex would have done when bck to society.

Well, my personal view (for any one who actually wants to know..)
Is that the film is about how materialistic us human beings are...
we all strive for things, power etc while thinking that these things will give us happiness...
Alex showed us that Happiness comes from being with nature and sharing that sense of connection with others. We all think that we are civilized, but we can never be civilized when we keep ignoring our humanity and the important things in life. Love.

I think many(expecially younger ppl)misunderstood the sense of the movie, a bit(even if...everyone is obviously entitled to find his/her own sense to it)...this movie is not about Alaska or nature or going hiking,this stuff is about moments in life...the moment to try and find your own way out of this crazy society and the moment u realize for happiness to be true you have to share it nontheless...u know what he wrote before dieing, that's the truth he found out about while away from everything.

i can understand his happiness in fact i think i do. i love 2 go hiking up big hills. its just like he says in the movie its just about being there in that special momment in time. just the way the view looks at that momment the way the shadows cast on the ground and on the hills. just the peacefullness of it all. the sound of the wind and the coolness of the breaze on ur face.
