  • Does anybody knows why did people started living in greenland? Was it because of some kind of migration or another reason? Thanks... hope it isnt a a dumb question.

  • No, I think it is a great question -- The first inhabitants came over the ice from Ellesmere Island, in Nunavut, Canada about 4000 years ago. If you look at a map, you can see where there is a very close distance between the Canadian island and Greenland. A really cool new book just came out - it is actually a 'cartoon book' called the "First Steps" which is about how these people - Arctic Inuit hunters - followed their prey as nomads of the land and made it to Greenland.

  • To finish up ...

The name "Greenland" was given to the island I believe in 982 or so by a Viking, Eric the Red, when he came there from Iceland. For about 400 years the Viking lived and farmed in southern Greenland -- then they vanished because the conditions became to hard with the coming of the Small Ice Age. Hope that helps!
