@coy0te9 No teenager can figure that out while life is making an incredible racket in their head. Patti knows, and I wonder - did the folks at the factory ever forgive her for having hope?
A few years ago, in a big tent in Santa Fe, she walked out by herself, read "Piss Factory", spit on the floor, then the band ripped into "Wicked Messenger". Would have been as fine a time to die as any.

how hot are her lyrics, "and the way they smell and here i gotta be up here up here smellin dot hooks midwife sweat i would rather smell the way boys smell oh those schoolboys the way their legs flap under the desk in study hall that odor rising roses and ammonia dand the way their dicks droop like lilacs or the way they smell that forbidden acrid smell but no i got, i got a pink clammy lady in my nostril" i love it
I wouldn't call this a song. This is spoken word with music in the background. I saw Patti a few weeks ago in Chicago for a little event where she read from her new book and did a couple of songs. It was awesome.
I'm gonna go to New York City, gonna go to New York City, gonna be a big star, gonna go to New York City be a big star and I will never return, never return, no never return...watch me now...
This song is filled with full on energy and yearning. I was at the MoMA last week and they had an exhibit that featured this song and it just brought tears to my eyes.
Great tune, I listened to this for weeks driving to and from work everyday, Richard Sohl with musical quotes from Gershwin's Summertime, if you like the piano playing check out the live version of Hang On To a Dream by the Nice. I had front row center seats for Patti in 77, she cancelled and regretably I have never seen her perform live because I work at a Piss Factory and she seems to always play my area when I am working an afternoon shift. I will have to get on that train next time she comes.
i got "and i will travel light oh watch me now" tattoed around my wrist becuz of this song. patti is just amazing. hearing that song i always thought i'm gonna get out there, i'm gonna be somebody someday. not working in a factory or working some other job i hate. thanks patti
i wanna write poetry bout the life of me and psyco-ology and the thinks i see like a bumm on a bench with a dirty old wench who cant stop the stench of her shit-filled wretch she cant stop the tears after some bears like a clock with new gears shes living her fears the eyes see no end like a stick that wont bend it snaps like a friend off with the send
"and the way they smell,& here i gotta b up here smellin Dot Hooks midwife sweat,i would rather smell the way boys smell-oh those schoolboys the way their legs flap under the desk n study hall, that odor rising roses & amonia,& the way their dicks droop like lilacs,or the way they smell that forbidden acrid smell, but no i got,i got pink clammy lady n my nostril.."<3
If it wasn't for this weird chick saying crap to crappy music, much of the music you get now wouldn't be around:) By '85 nearly every interview with just about anyone in the rock music world cited Patti Smith as a serious influence.
One of the greatest influences on modern rock ever according to Rolling Stone...but each to their own. Doesn't matter if you like it or not, the idea is that it creates an opinion...thanks for yours:)
Nice work, my friend, and thanks. You're right about its emotional impact. Perhaps you could identify pianist Richard Sohl in your links, though - RIP
Have you ever heard of El Duce? He was a song bird, also a perv, looked like a retarded catfish.

I love it, but I can't help but wonder if Patti ever figured out that Dot and the others she left behind had desires too.

First heard this in 1977 and I have to say this is one of my all time favorite Patti Smith songs, let alone one of my all time faves in general.
This is a must hear for anyone who has ever despised, or still does despise their job.
It's lucky she didn't lose a limb doing a factory job after taking a swig of Romilar, although DM highs are certainly fun.
Thanks for posting this gem, it's so hard to find

It's as though you opened a time capsule from 35 years ago and glimpsed into Patti's life. Very moving, emotional, and poetic.

@MinGophers workers who work for a wage are slaves to that wage..without it they starve, hence they are slaves..
