  • She was SO pretty.

I mean REALLY pretty. Prettier than Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn.

  • Simply beautiful !

  • There's no disputing that Fred Astaire is one of the greatest dancers that ever lived, but as an actor I've always found him creepy and unlikable.

  • Wow! Real talent!

  • No se como llegue a este video.. estaba buscando musica electronica...jajaja.. nada ma; :)

  • stunning...simply stunning aint she?

  • Even though I'm only 45 years old, it is a joy to see a stunning Rita Hayworth dancing with Fred Astaire.... Rita dressed in a beautiful gown by Irene, matches Astaire step by step.... She dances with a beautiful confidence that comes thru on screen, its a shame that today we look at a Kim Kardashian and think she is a star!!! No way honey!!!! Rita Hayworth was, and still is a star of the brightest magnitude...

  • @OldHollywoodMovies - same, I so agree with you and i'd rather watch old classic movies that some of the

stuff they show today. I'm 18 too.. & I LOVE rita hayworth and this move!

  • Rita Hayworth did not do her own singing in her movies. Her voice was often dubbed by Nan Wynn and Anita Ellis (Gilda).

  • Rita Hayworth did not do her own singing in her movies. Her voice was often dubbed by Nan Wynn and Anita Ellis (Gilda).

  • I don't get why people are comparing Michael Jackson and Fred Astaire, they're both incredibly talented performers but their styles are completely differennt!

  • @OldHollywoodMovies I hope one day some sensitve producer will publish all the Astaire films. However this song sounds wonderful, sung by just anyone - and Rita? well............

  • I'm old fashioned; I LOVE Classic Hollywood :)

  • What can you say? We won't ever see the likes of this again - Astaire, Hayworth, the songs of Kern and Mercer - it couldn't be replicated today if you tried.

  • Astaire was obviously lying about his height, but that's Hollywood...mostly short men. Rita was not 3 inches shorter than him as evident in their films. I met an elderly veteran who met her at the Canteen and he said she was tall . And so beautiful she outshined everybody!

  • @raspberriesandar The height seems right. When the camera pans out to full body frame she is wearing small heels and he is only slightly taller at that point at their closest full erect pose. I'd say without the heels 3 inches sounds right. That would put her around 5'6 5'7. Pretty tall for a lady

  • @rhslinebacker33 I believe she was taller than that. Astaire had lifts on, that was an industry given. At least Astaire wasn't as short as Gene Kelly. In Dubarry Was A Lady , Kelly sits in a booth with Red Skelton and Skelton dwarfs him! I swear he looked like he needed a booster seat. Gene Kelly was shorter than 5'7.

  • @raspberriesandar @raspberriesandar I'll agree that Gene was shorter, but I won't agree to the lifts. When working with research, there is nothing to suggest Fred was shorter while there is a lot of sites suggesting his height at 5'9''. A review of Heyworth in 1942, puts her at 5'6''. I also do not see the lifts

  • however the video entitled, "Fred Astaire and Rita Haworth" is a clearer resolution shows that he is wearing just normal shoes, while still being taller than her.

  • @rhslinebacker33 My grandmother worked in Hollywood in the 1940s. She told me that a lot of male stars wore lifts, including dancers like Astaire and Kelly. She also met Hayworth and said she was 5'8 ish. I believe her. 5'6 was never considered tall for a woman.

  • Comment removed

  • @rhslinebacker33 Lucille Ball was also tall. She was above 5'7 according to her daughter. Actresses lied about their heights for fear of losing parts due to shorter co-stars and to seem more "dainty" to the public. Height in a woman was considered a drawback to male dance stars.

  • @rhslinebacker33 Lifts are also worn inside shoes. Watch Astaire and Rita dance atop the tank in the big wedding dance finale of You'll Never Get Rich, she was taller than him when they are standing on top the giant tank dancing.

  • @raspberriesandar I never mentioned that Hayworth posted her height at 5'6'' someone else did. No one has denied this. Also, I watched the tank scene, Astaire bends for most of the number except the end where they come together and he he obviously taller. Also, since the Average height of Women present is now 5'4'' that would mean more than likely your grandmother was shorter than both of them. Did she carry a tape measure with her to measure these actors and actresses?

  • @rhslinebacker33 What a rude insidious comment. My grandmother was a tall strapping 5'10 and worked on Columbia sets. She had been an athlete. Does it require carrying a tape measure to know whether a person is short or tall? I think not. And unless you are Astaire himself (back from the grave no less!!!) I think I will continue to take grandmother's word for it as she met them.

That bending theory of yours is rich lol. :-)

  • @raspberriesandar The comment was not rude nor insidious, you are taking it personally and clouding any objective judgement. Also, I would take the numerous journalists, Astaire's comments, His videos of being taller than other actors including Gene Kelly whom family members said was 5'7''. I do believe your grandmother was incorrect. But don't feel bad, I have a book about a Vietnam vet talking about a battle like it was yesterday....then to find out, he was stateside when the battle took place

  • @raspberriesandar also, the bending theory is rich with fact. As you can see it quite clearly in the video, and then when he stands erect he is taller than her.

  • @raspberriesandar

Wow she was tall. This is not insult because I’m 5'11 women. What did she do just out of curiosity if you don’t mind telling me?

  • @lizzyvance Hi! yes she was tall and proud of it even though she hated her shoe size lol. She worked on sets (decor, scenery) and basically was an assistant.

  • @raspberriesandar more proof is any Bing Crobsy and Fred AStaire number. Bing is said to have been 5'7'' flat without lifts. IN song and dance man, AStaire is obviously three inches taller. Take a little off for the taps he is wearing in the scene, it's about right.

  • @rhslinebacker33 You take this rather personally don't you?

  • @raspberriesandar trying to figure out how I take it personally, with your aggressive comments.

  • @rhslinebacker33 You're very much right about Rita's height. One of Rita's passports was on ebay recently and I think is still listed there. It cleary states that Rita's height was 5'6''. Furthermore, in all the years I've been a Rita fan I've never came across another height record in any other source. And I also very much agree that 5'6'' is tall for a woman especially in Rita's heyday. My mother is 5'6'' and she has always been considered tall.

  • @et7waage1 With "another height record" I meant a different height record than 5'6'' ;-)

  • @et7waage1 I like your channel of Rita videos but I do not like your comment. If you dd not meet Rita yourself then how can you be so sure? and passports or not sworn statements of height, anybody could tell you that. They are also bribable to make her seem smaller which to Harry Cohn made her more "feminine". 5'6 is NOT tall, it is average. And I will continue to believe my grandmother despite the lunacy of youtube posters who take all this so personally.

  • @raspberriesandar If you never came across another height record for her it is because all sources REPEAT EACH OTHER over and over. Hollywood and the press are not known for honesty or fact checking. Go ahead and believe she was short it doesn't matter anymore to Rita. But she was tall, and not just that "for a woman" baloney...

  • @raspberriesandar I don't quite get why you are attacking me now. I just tried to help clarifying things. Why should a passport list the wrong height? That would be nonsense. I'm 5'8½" and have always been the tallest girl in my classes and family. In her day Rita's 5'6'' was certainly tall for a woman. If I can get accustomed that Rita was not as tall as me then you can get accustomed to it, too. I think it's more than obvious for everyone who really takes this personally here. Have a nice day!

  • I love this they were so glamorous it was so romantic and I wish I was young again (82 now) I just came to life at the pictures & imagined I was the heroine of every film & was so surprised when I got home looked in the mirror and it was just me . I am so thankful to who ever made these videos available I am spending hours reliving all those Lovely films.THANKYOU. Yvonne

  • i was born in the Wrong Era. This is Wonderful

  • I saw the NYC Ballet dancing to this last night! They did a really great job! :D

  • another great clip of these two on U-tube which is really well done and beautifully edited ...type in My Maria

  • I love the ending! So cute how they close the doors

  • @VelmaKelly1997 Have you ever seen Turner Classic Movies channel? They play old movies all the time and no commercials.

  • @theLadySpies TCM is not available world wide, unfortunately.

  • she's effin hot.

  • Fred and Rita could run a chippy - but Hayworth and Astaire HAVE to be stars!

  • Me identifico totalmente...

  • Rita Hayworth.....no one compares to her now, then, ever. Truly stunningly beautiful as well as talented.

  • What a sight ! what a sound !

  • No wonder Fred (apparently) said she was his favourite dancing partner. Although I just have to prefer Ginger, Rita is obviously a completely natural dancer, like it's in her blood she's amazing!!!

  • Holy sh-t! That's Starbuck's father!!!

  • Why does Michael Jackson have to have NO grace compared to him? Fred Astaire is obviously the king, but that doesn't make Michael any less of a master of the art of dance.

Let's not compare at all. Let's just watch and appreciate true talent.

  • I know this has been said many times around the Internet, but good luck finding the actually source. His comment about Ginger though is from his autobiography, Steps In Time. I have notice around the Internet and on YouTube, there are people who say Fred Liked a certain dancer best, and it's usually one that they themselves like best.

  • This is what we old fellows call class. In behaviour and all.

  • Oh, Fred. So charming, so elegant, so unassuming, so talented...this is a beautiful

Wooowww times what never go back...so shame.

  • Ugh...and now we're stuck with the likes of Lindsay Lohan, Orlando bloom and Megan fox..completely crap and none of them can hold a candle to the old Hollywood stars. we're never going to get a Rita or a Fred ever again...shameful. I love themboth so much

  • @VintageKitch. I am very fortunate in never having heard of the people you refer to.

Could they possibly be any worse that the gaustly trash peddled as popular music in the UK?

I am so dissapointed that most of the younger generation here ever get to hear a single note of GOOD music.

The BBC "yoof" freaks are to blame of course. There is no variety at all.

  • Rita's voice was dubbed.....

  • Rita and Fred were great together, but to quote Fred's on words - Ginger became such a talented dancer as time went on, that she made anybody else I danced with look wrong. As an artist myself, I have to agree. Rita and the many other women he danced with were all terrific, but the chemistry between Fred and Ginger was like no other. It was so strong, that they literally became the one and only famous dance duo. Ginger was also extremely versatile and could dance anything they threw at her.

  • @mdshullaw52 When asked who was the best dancer he had ever danced with, Fred Astaire said that it was Rita Hayworth (not Ginger Rogers).

  • She has such a beautiful voice! <3

  • That dress is ridiculous (in a goregous way!)

  • its so crazy when you look back to these movies because they show you what reall love was.Now in todays media its sleep with whoever

  • Rita Heyworth wasn't a 'natural' dancer. There's nothing 'natural' about being trained as a flamenco dancer from the age of 5 by the world's leading teacher :-)

  • @HunterstonB How comes then that nobody who was also trained in dancing from an early age on ever danced like Rita H-a-yworth? Training alone isn't enough.

  • @HunterstonB But when it comes to chemistry, Ginger and Fred were meant to be. Ginger was a better comedic actress than Fred's other dancing partners. Plus she had those innocent and childlike qualities to her personality and performance. Each of Fred's dancing partners had their own unique qualities, and they were all great.

  • @chilvari Yes, I agree, Ginger was the better actress, but in dance Rita was in a different class - she had to be because of her intense training that started in early childhood.

  • Comment removed

  • Katherine Hepburn famously said of the Ginger Rogers-Fred Astaire pairing: "He gave her class, she gave him sex." Not true. It was the unbelievably alluring Rita who gave Fred, Gene and every partner she ever had both class AND sex.

  • Incredibly beautiful...all of it.

  • It's weird to think that this was made roughly 30 years before the Beatles were on the Ed Sullivan show, and roughly 30 years after the first films. All three periods of American entertainment seem just as far away to me.

  • I looooooooove this song!!!

  • For a cold, rainy day. Enjoy.

  • That dress is killer...she is beautiful.

  • Of all the pictures she made she only liked two. She called them her jewels. They were the ones she made with Fred. She said, she laughed at all the rest. Unlike the sex goddess they protrayed her, she was quiet and reserved, and nothing like Gilda, one of her movies. When the cameras rolled she turned it on, but when they stoped, she went back to being Rita.

  • Where are we going to get talent and songs like this again?

  • Nan Wynn as far as I know for consistancy always sang Ritas songs, Ms. Wynn also was beautiful but ordinary beautiful not Rita Hayworth beautiful. Ms. Hayworth as many Hollywood Latin performers had to change their Latin surnames to fit the racism of American culture during those times thank God that this a practice of the past - Praise the Lord

  • @persevere4 Hi, I agree with you on Nan Wynn but Rita didn't change her last name because of racism or prejudice. Her mother was Irish and her maiden name was Haworth, so it sounded and looked better than Cansino. Maria Montez,Carmen Miranda,Cesar Romero, Delores Del Rio were all "Latin" and enjoyed very successful careers in Hollywood during the thirties and forties.......

  • There is nor ever was nor will ever be again anyone like Astaire. How lucky are we that we live in an age where his performances are at our fingertips.

So where are his "Swing Time" dances?

  • That is freakingg adorable !

I love how this was from agessss ago yet the most recent comment was from 3 days ago :D it's true legends never die..

  • "Your streamline!" Oh yeah

  • Gene Kelly and Fred were in a class of their own.

  • Rita Hayworth is clearly the superior dancer. Check the shaping of her arm movements and upper torso.

Below the waist they are about the same, but she has better control her upper torso movement

  • @HunterstonB I agree. As much as I love the Ginger and Fred pairing, Rita and Fred was better. And that's because Rita was a nautral born dancer. She definetly had that element of rhythm that Fred's other dancing partners don't have. Just look at her hips, legs and arms. I also think she had better control of her feet than Fred's other dancing partners. When I see Rita Hayworth dance, it's like she's floating (she moves around the floor effortlessly).

  • Fred Astaire had such a beautiful smile- filled with true, gentle sweetness. Lorraine

  • Rita, her eyes, her mouth, her smile, her dress - Fred, his eyes, his smile, his legs - Rita, her dress, her legs, her hair - Fred his legs, his suit - Rita, her arms, her dress -

Their dance together is a pure moment of harmony and perfection.

  • I love this I watch every day after I have had a bad day at work in that case most of the time... I love them such class thank you!!!

  • such elegance and class america once had.... whatever happened to it today?

  • @fluffet Baby Boomers.

  • @repose1983

    Baby Boomers.

    BINGO.

  • @1990osu

He was born in 1899 and she was born in 1918. Those two were WAY before baby boomers!! Baby boomers were born AFTER WWII

  • @muggaful

I know; I was responding to a question regarding what happened to this country and the class it used to have, as shown here

  • Sheriff little Doodle fired a shot at you whoooooo woooooo!

  • A good pair ,not old fashionned at all.

  • Identificação total com a letra, rsrs

  • Fred was a consummate dancer and actor. Cole Porter wrote his songs with Fred in mind. Rita was a much better dancer than Ginger. Her parents were famous dancers, the Flying Cansinos, and Rita was trained to take her mother's place as a pre-teen. Her dancing is seamless. Fred said she was her favorite partner. He looks enchanted by her, something that was lacking in his performances with Ginger. Don't get me wrong, I love Ginger and Fred, but Rita is so in synch with Fred when they dance.

  • @lana1939 Actually you're thinking of Irving Berlin who wrote many songs for Astaire, but, hey, nice attempt at sounding smart. Thanks for playing.

  • @mustangred

Yes, Irving Berlin wrote many songs for Fred but so did Cole Porter. He wrote the scores for two films and Fred introduced Night and Day in The Gay Divorcee.

    Thanks again for showcasing this.

  • @lana1939 Nope. Astaire, just by the nature of the movies he did and the time period he was doing them in, introduced many songs by many composers. But Berlin specifically wrote songs FOR him. Porter was commissioned to write songs for movies, some of which happened to star Astaire. Thanks for playing, though.

  • @mustangred

I disagree. When a composer scores a film, he knows the cast and has the actors in mind. Also, they were great friends. Still love your clip though.

  • great!

  • Just Beautiful.

I`m an Old Fashioned too and I don`t mind it. Thanks for sharing with Us. Lorraine

  • @TheGreatePerformers, thank you for the lovely video, and the lovely description which accompanied it. it truly made it i much more interesting and memorable for me. thank you :)

  • SOOOOOOOOOOO Cute and Romantic and it very Romancing.

  • I could listen to her sing all day...such a wonderful, tender beauty...

  • such elegance of speech and movement.

  • Why would Rita Hayworth ever wear her hair up ever. It's so much better down.

  • My two icons. Style, sensuality, elegance, talent....

  • that has to be 1 of the best conclusions to a dance

  • i'm old fashioned too!

  • Rita was only 24 years old when this movie was released in 1942. She had already lived a lifetime!!! But the joy she brought to a war torn world can never be measured!!! Her, along with other beautiful movie stars like Hedy Lamarr, Veronica Lake, Lana Turner, Gene Tierney and countless others made people smile and forget the rationing of food and other needed items to support the war effort. Today we have welfare moms and dads, illegal immigrants and a White House full of liars....

  • @DAVEJJR don't forget the greed that has taken over the country.

  • Such style and grace. Now we got talentless, skanky sluts all over!

  • God I love these two.

  • Those "local lads" were probably homos.

  • holy shit! This literally left me saying WOW! No joke, this is amazing!!!! Now this is how you dance; people don't dance like this anymore. God, that was brilliant!

  • music in movies is bck in whether its rnb or pop it is popular again and in some near time it will be the most popular again. to this kind of movies will be back again. and rita will be seen andheard by many a wannbe and will be more adored then any star from by gone era

  • If Rita is old fashioned then I want to be antiqued as soon as possible.

  • @heartrenderer05 Hahaha, me, too ;-D

  • @heartrenderer05 Me too! she is absolutely stunning.

  • Awesome !

  • Saw Astaire on the big screen years ago..Wow what a treat.........Love that dress

  • "I'm Oldfashioned" and similar melodies from that era were the first I ever heard on the gramophone and they still fill me with nostalgia and sentimentality. Nothing better has been written in popular music since. And Astaire and his various partners represent a kind of beauty that has passed forever from the earth apart from such valuable recordings. "They is angels" remarks the unjustly condemned Kofi in" The Green Mile" when he is permitted to see one of Fred's musicals as a final treat.

  • I loved it!!!! I've never seen before some of Fred Astaire's dance... I gotta find this movie.

    Thanks!!!!

  • @RevekaTakarai This movie 'was posted' on YouTube, I don't know if it still is.

  • definitions for words like stunning, superb, amazing, incredible, beautiful, graceful, styled, effortless, entertaining come to mind watching Fred and Rita !!!!! TY for possibly the MOST incredible dancing EVER filmed !!!!!

  • There was a real chemistry between Astaire and Hayworth and she never looked happier than when she was in movies with Fred. Pity there was only two.

  • i love this x

  • I mention Astaire in The Celebrity Song.

  • when fred astaire first saw himself onscreen, he said "My god, i look like a knife!"

haha, i knife..? no, to me he is an amazingly talented legend, and no golden knife could symbolize him.

  • Just on TCM so I had to search for it. Great pairing, great song, great dance. They were 20 years difference in age so it's especially poignant for her to sing this song to him, "I'm Old Fashioned." Astaire considered Hayworth one of the best dancers he ever worked with.

  • I'm in awe how she can go from Gilda to this.

  • @PeaceNdLovee Yep, she was truly gifted (though actually she went from this to Gilda, which was filmed and released four years later). It's a shame she only made two films with Astaire, but after years of being linked with Ginger, he was leery of getting "stuck" with another partner

  • bella mujer q musica mas relajadora linda epoca DIVINA

  • : )

  • i love this movie so much! thank you for uploading this

  • 1.Fred Astaire - Teacher

    2.Michael Jackson - student

  • Is it me or does Katherine Heigl look like Rita?

  • hmm...now that you mention it, a BIT...but Rita is obviously much more amazing, in my opinion

  • I love this song!! Mainly because I'm old fashioned too... ah well. I'd rather be old-fashioned like them than "stream-lined" like America's culture today.

  • Simply beautiful...what other words to describe them both. How sad our culture which was once so rich with artistic beauty has regressed to what it's become today.

  • Class, sheer class.

  • Well I guess I'm old fashioned too =)

  • Why don't people dance with discretion and modesty anymore, like these two lovely people?

  • yeah these days everything has to be so showy.

  • @freetobeme03 if only people were more like this today. things would be so much better

  • Qué bonito! Ojalá aún se escribieran cosas tan bellas...qué arreglos, qué orquestación...

  • Rita was and is beautiful!!! I love her dress.

  • Fred is from Omaha? I had no idea, but it's no surprise. For all of his sophistication, there's a salt of the earth, regular guy quality about him that can't be disguised. No wonder he was such a star. One can't do better than Middle America.

    Norm

  • "I was never adored by local lads......"

Yeah, RIGHT! Now, I'LL tell one, Gorgeous!

    xoxoxoxoxoxoxoox!

  • The dancing is wonderful. But look at it again and listen to the music. What a wonderful arrangement. This arrangement, as is, could be used in a Broadway show today. It's timeless and perfect.

  • Thank you so much for this...Sure, today's movie "magic" gives the audience 3D special effects galore, but this scene shows us the kind of magic that you NEVER see at the movies today; and that is those truly magical moments when two people realize that they've fallen in love with each other....

  • this whole scene for me is like watching two angelic souls in heaven, one gets the feeling their not acting at all, the ideals of heaven are in bloom

  • @PYCHO07 wow where did you get that text from?

  • If you look up solar angel & see how its described, you will know that that is what one sees when looking at Rita & Fred, they have evolved the love of god within, their angelic qualities radiates the three worlds from the soul & which you dont normally see until your in heaven. Now i can say ive seen angels

  • Ok Great !!..i like audrey hepburn myself

  • Rita was Fred's favorite dance partner. Do not blame him!

  • @hajune Yes, Rita WAS Fred's favorite partner, but not many know it. For some reason it is always Ginger who's mentioned in connection with Fred. Ginger was very, very good — but Rita had that 'touch of sexy grace' which, up to now, no one has been able to match. Go see her dance with Fred in the 'Shorty George" routine in the same great 'You Were Never Lovelier' film.

  • I love this song so much. How Rita used her eyes when she's singing the song was incredible. Not every woman can do it. In fact, very few can do it. The music, the mood, the dance...Romentic.

  • i love her dress!!!!!!

  • i luv it!!! :D

  • their is no such thing as an out dated legends. im sure they could out dance anyone today. they are so magical togther. i am getting their movies. cant wait.

  • Exactly. Class and talent are timeless.

  • OMG. I just fell in love w/ Rita all over again. I want her dress too. I wonder what the original color was???

  • This dress was black ;-)

  • Rita es sencillamente adorable!!!
