My father is the Servive Manager for Longo Toyota in El Monte, near LA, and every time a customer came in and complained of an accelerator issue they check a box in the dash that keeps record of pedal input, speed, rpm, and on some models location, everytime they accelerated to a fast speed and crashed but never applied brakes or let off the gas pedal. He even had complaints from other manufatures like Scion and Lexus.
It all boils down to whether a natural process can cause a resistive short such that (i) the computer doesn't pick that it has occurred; and (ii) that the resistive short acts to accelerate the vehicle. It is amazing that Toyota's engineers and Exponent's engineers aren't aware of a naturally occurring process that can cause a resistive short in tin plated or soldered electronics. Such resistive short circuits due to "tin whiskers" have been found in Toyota's accelerator pedals!!!!!
these people are lying, there is absolutely, positively, nothing wrong with these cars except the inept money-hungry greedy lying people who make these false claims, not to mention others who are stupid enough to believe every sensational news story, not to mention the fact that it is just a way to get you attention and sell commercial products on t.v., I work on these cars and I know, nothing wrong with them....period
Sorry, but if you are unable to figure out how to stop your car with the throttle stuck open you are not fit for the road. Many things (on any car) can stick a gas pedal, or throttle. For that matter the ACTUAL throttle controlling gas/air into the engine can really just get stuck.
I WAS ALMOST KILLED IN MY TOYOTA '06 4 RUNNER ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS WITH MY TWO YEAR OLD IN THE BACK! NEVER EVER EVER WILL I BUY ANOTHER TOYOTA!! THIS WAS BEFORE ALL THIS CRAP WAS IN THE MEDIA...THEY TOLD ME IT WAS MY FLOOR MATS!! TO BAD MY ATTORNEYS PROVED OTHERWISE. I HAVE BEEN CONTACTED FROM AROUND THE GLOBE FROM LAWYERS THAT HAVE CASES AGAINST TOYOTA. THIS IS A REAL PROBLEM....WAIT UNTIL THESE CARS GET HIGER MILES AND ARE KILLING NOT ONLY THE PEOPLE DRIVING THEM BUT ALSO THE INNOCENT!
Sure I have responded already. Maybe I should have written a Haiku poem to get a positive response from some gullible, mindless, Prius- driving dimwits who profess to care for the environment, yet you have this zombie-like allegiance to one of the only countries that (here in the 21st century), still not only refuses to comply to the international whaling ban, but also kill dolphins (watch "The Cove"), and kill sharks for their fins (watch "Shark Water") SO SORRY, NOT POETIC LIKE TRANSFUSIONSAN
This happens to my 2007 Toyota Camry. Its NOT the floormats. I took mine out right away. It still does this. If any media wants to look at my car, please email me at nospamfordb@gmail.com
I think it is a computer problem. I experienced this when I was in my father's Lexus E300. It was at an intersection when he was slowing down to make a right turn, the car suddenly accelerated. Luckily no one was killed, or injured. The car was damaged. Toyota is lying.
I don't see any of Chrysler or Ford's unintended acceleration problems making any major news. According to Bloomberg, Ford and Chrysler had the 2nd and 3rd most unintended acceleration deaths with 20 and 12 respectively. To top it off, the majority of the unintended acceleration death reports for Toyota have come in the past year, when people started hearing about the recall.
@AppleMacBookAir2 I would like to see this report. I'm not doubting you, but I like to check references before I comment on things. Also, did you know about any of the Toyota defects that they hid from the media over the last twenty years or so?
Google: Ford Had 20 Acceleration Deaths as Regulators Cited Human Error- Bloomberg
NHTSA sees jump in Toyota complaints. NHTSA Spokesperson says "It is normal for NHTSA to receive an increase in consumer complaints after a recall is announced"
Google: NHTSA sees jump in Toyota complaints- USA Today
While I can't deny Toyota has done a piss-poor job of their recall, other companies like Ford have also tried to cover up their problems too.
TOYOTA IS FULL OF IT!!! I HAVE A 2007 TOYOTA 4RUNNER v8, THAT HAS THE SAME PROBLEM....PROBLEMS WERE DOCUMENTED BEFORE THIS WAS EVER EVEN IN THE MEDIA!!! THEY CONTINUE TO DENY DENY DENY...AND PUT THE SAFTEY OF MY FAMILY IN DANGER EVERY SINGLE DAY......NEVER EVER WILL I BUY A TOYOTA AGAIN.......I HAVE ALMOST BEEN KILLED IN THIS CAR SEVERAL TIMES!! SHAME ON YOU TOYOTA...ADMIDT THAT YOU HAVE A PROBLEM AND QUIT KILLING PEOPLE EVERY DAY KNOWING THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This must be why despite Obama's best efforts, NASA and NHTSA weren't able to find any problems with the electronics and faulted the drivers in the majority of cases. BUY TOYOTA !
@accordguy0325 What kind of conspiracy nut are you? Remove your head from your butt, and take a good long look at the mess that Obama took over from Bush Jr.. Please tell the rest of us why our president would bother with conspiring against some Japanese corporation, when he has so many other things to deal with? FUCK YOUR JAP-SHIT TOYOTA! THINK ABOUT SUPPORTING YOUR OWN COUNTRY! (Or move to jap land)
Are people stupid? For it to jam against your pedal, you have to first press your pedal all the way down *and* somehow push your mat forward....
And all of you people who think that people purposefully are crashing their cars and putting their families in danger....yeah. Okay, sure. *rolls eyes*
I think the advice offered at end - push the brake pedal hard, put the car in neutral to make it stop, and then turn it off - is the best thing about this video. I don't really know who is wrong here; it could either be the drivers or Toyota Motors. But the way to handle the situation if does something goes wrong is a great way inform the people.
I think they should make this sort of a thing mandatory in drivers ed for young drivers. It's just like teaching some one CPR: you may save lives.
but you have to wonder, dont you think other car brands are unhappy about how great thier reputation is,? they could be paying people off, thoose people dont look trust worthy, this could be just some great lie,
@ohfuhhk that is another thing about Toyota car. They steer on it's own, ABC had cover that story. Better tell your toyota dealer about your situation.
Hey, remember Cheech and Chong? 'Whoa man, I thought you said step on the gas!'. People malfunction too. They crash cars for lots of reasons. Mostly poor judgment. Everyone wants to blame the car. It's just the continuing saga of people not wanting to take responsibility for their actions. Very typically American. I think they should put video cameras, simple webcams, under the dash to watch what people are doing with the pedals. We'll settle this once and for all.
First the floor mats then the gas pedals pretty soon its gonna be the electrical system.A couple weeks or so a lady was on the news because her toyota spun off and it hit a ymca and she said she just got it taken to the dealer because of the recall so theres gotta be something other then the gas pedal thats going on,
ford had problems with the breaks this year and i dont see a big fuss about it. i think they want to do this so toyota cant sell cars because the government bought most of the dealers and they cant sell so they hit toyota one of the top markets so they steal the consumers.
Have you guys ever heard of the Audi 5000? of course not, it was a very well built car that was to sell in the US, but sales died after people said it suddenly accelerated, later it turns out it was because the driver accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake pedal, I think this is just a way to make excuses for accidents and kills the primary competitor against US cars, Toyotas also have the most reliable cars on the market.
Drivers are the problem! Like Audi's issue over 20 years ago - all the cars back then were defect free and only AUTOMATIC cars were affected. WHY? Drivers pressed the gas instead of the brake.
Telling the truth doesn't improve ratings.
Brakes are more powerful than engines. If you mash the brake and the gas at the same time the car will still stop - it might take a few feet longer but it will stop.
Car and Driver proved it last month by testing Nissan, Toyota and Ford cars and all stopped.
JEJE you make me laugh even toyota is agree that the fault is on the cars...jeje i hope you give that argument in the tribunals for toyota lets see what the justice say jejeje.
Toyota hasn't agreed that the cars are the fault. They've simply stated they wouldn't blame the drivers. It's what the Japanese do - it's called 'saving face'. The Japanese don't blame people even if it's obvious to allow them to save some dignity.
Go and make proper cars u dick faces. I guess that's why our automakers have been ass raping urs for 2 decades. It's hard to take i know. Just take the pain in the ass like ur father did you. Yank Fuck
these stupid mindless dumb fucks! Why the fuck did they not, I don't know, try putting the car into neutral?? those first four that died deserved it. They had more than enough time to take it out of gear and slow it the fuck down. I like how the dispatcher asked them if there was any way to turn it off and they just sat there waiting for it to crash! Fuckin' geniuses! Yeah, obviously, Toyota has an issue, but these idiots who just sit there with their thumbs up their asses deserve what they get
I guess the only thing they tried was slamming on the brakes. In my opinion its because some americans drive only automatics and forget about shifting.
And its not like the 911 operator has this kind of knowledge or ability to tell you what to do via phone.
Toyota has been for many years in row best car manufacturer in the world. I just amaze that Americans will do anything to get their cars back on market and sell them.
Please everyone read this link about Toyota hiring former NHTSA employees who are investigating Toyota crashes! 40% of all US congressmen have taken Toy. $ over last 10 yrs! Millions given by japanese companies to consumer union who publishes consumer reports - who doesn't disclose specific donators! Where are the 20 yr old toyota's handed down to their kids like our families 20 yr old Ford's our kids drive? currentpoliticalscene dotcom/2010/02/toyota-ethics-problems-indication-of dot html
This is without any doubt a carefully orchestrated media campaign in the US to discredit the most successful auto maker in the world and get the US auto industry back on it's feet. All auto manufacturers have had similar problems and they all use the same parts. Shameful of the American media. They do hate to lose...
I tend to agree with you TSM. First of all, I dont quite understand how someone can be so stupid as to not TURN OFF THE ENGINE!!! PUT IT IN NEUTRAL! Is it REALLY THAT HARD??? But I do agree, this is a lame attempt to prop up obama motors.
Guess what? It is NOT working. toyota sales are up FIFTY PERCENT the first week in march! GO TOYOTA! YEAH! ha ha haha
ENTIRELY AGREE, and I drive a Chevrolet. The obviously cheap continuous media smear is so underhanded and the claimants stories accepted by a credulous media with NO examination nor skepticism at all!! This is a carefully rigged media smear.
One of Toyota's most vocal critics is automobile consumer advocate Fumio Matsuda, often called his nation's Ralph Nader, who in 1970 formed the Japan Automobile Consumer Union.
Now 84, the former Nissan quality control engineer has spent decades monitoring Toyota and Japan's other carmakers.
He calls Toyota's business practices the most secretive of all. In the past, he said, Toyota sponsored "secret recalls," asking owners to visit....
.... dealers for vehicle checkups, a ploy that allowed them to replace defective parts and then charge the owner for the work
.
"Everything Toyota does is hidden," he said.
Matsuda said he believed that Toyota also knew of defects involved in the most recent recall long before going public.
"I believe there will eventually be criminal charges," he said. "They knew there were problems with their cars, but they didn't do anything until they were pressured."
Buy American PLEASE! Gm Ford or Chrysler . We need to support the US economy and by buying a car from 1 of the Big 3 you support the American economy alot more.
A major amount of factories for the 3 big US motor company cars are build in Mexico. Yet most Toyota and Honda cars that are in North America are build in the US... The consumer purchasing is a fair game. Even when the gov gives out free money to the big 3 the big 3 will still have low sales overall. Do you see the problem.
scary!!! I won't be buying a Toyota any time soon! "Dang confounded electric cars and their technology!!" Is is safe to say I'm in love with a stick shift? LOL
I have no problem buying a Toyota. I know too many people who rave about theirs and have never had any problem with them. Frankly I don't believe the media reports are entirely honest nor reported with any context at all.
It really is. There are no mysterious software "gremlins" causing sudden acceleration, no sticky pedals, just floor mats and idiots who cannot drive. Look up the "carquestions" guy and his video inspection of the gas pedals, nothing at all wrong with them. This is a Toyota WITCH HUNT.
Where were you when the US was being BSed by the auto media who received free field trips too Japan and swag while telling us all how wonderful Toyota's are to drive. Toyota built it's reputation on lies, secretly fixing customers cars. That's a conspiracy! Where were you when Ford got roasted over 600 fires out of 16 million vehicles with no injuries?! Or the Explorer recall woefully exaggerated by bad tires and driving. Toyotobots will lie like toyota to defend them!
You ask where was I...in the early 1980s I was doing GM Chevrolet RECALLS on the Citation for bad e-brakes and power steering racks that killed people. Toyotas started out as crappy little cars with BAD transmissions, then became the best in the world through lethal hard work, literally lethal hard work "karoshi". I drive a Chevy but I hate fraudulent media smears. This smear of Toyota is for geo-political reasons, not their quality.
ABC claims the complaints of SUA "took off after 2002" when Toy went to wire control. But Toy had some wire control models in 98, and after 99 their market share grew dramatically too, THEY SOLD MORE CARS!! Which would lead to more complaints naturally! There is no balance here at all.
When they took off, they also wanted to lower production costs, so they started out sourcing their pedal assemblies. First, a canadian company was sourcing them, but now CTS in India is making them since 2005, which fits well with the models Toyota is recalling. So I'd say toyota started to worry less about quality and how to milk more and more money out of their boom
"now CTS in India is making them since 2005, which fits well with the models Toyota is recalling. So I'd say toyota started to worry less about quality"
And you think Toy is recalling the pedals because there is some thing wrong with them? There isn't. An independent investigator here on U Tube hase proven that conslusively, he heated one to 250 F, froze it in water, still worked great. Toy is fooling U on pedals for a reason. Floor mats and driver error, zero more.
then explain why the prevalance of toyota's acceleration issues are so much higher per unit built. it doesn't have the most numbers, but the most accidents per car built. since it's drive by wire, it's either the pedal assembly or the ECU, since the floor mat escape goat fooled no one. Either way I'm not buying a Toyota, and it has nothing to do with this, I would never have owned one before these accidents, I could see toyota was going down the road of the big three
"why the prevalance of toyota's acceleration issues are so much higher per unit built"
Higher than what? A rolling donut? Please read Ed Wallace's article "The Toyota Witch Hunt" Business Week. He actualy quotes one of the NHTSA so-called "complaints" used against Toyota by the media to inflate their numbers to "thousands". It's at the top of his article really funny. Search it. The TV media have not reported ANY mitigating context to their audience at all. Suspicious.
Wrong idiot! THE DATA IN THIS REPORT SHOWS TOYOTA IS FAVOURABLE EVEN WHEN CONSIDERING MARKET SHARE IN 'GENERAL' COMPLAINTS. THIS IS ABOUT UNINTENDED ACCELERATION COMPLAINTS ONLY!...OF WHICH TOYOTA HAS 10 TIMES THE INDUSTRY AVG. WITH 50 PLUS DEAD AND COUNTING! STATE FARM WARNED THE NHTSA TWICE - IN 04 AND THEN RAISED PREMIUMS FOR TOYOTA OWNERS IN 07 DUE TO ABNORMALLY HIGH ACCIDENT RATES. THE ONLY CONSPIRACY IS TOYOTA'S HUGE LOBBY GETTING THE NHTSA TO ROLL OVER - TO ONLY ISSUE THE 1ST TOKEN..
WITCH HUNT. This report is the most disingenuous misleading smear what used to be called "yellow journalism" Where is the CONTEXT, all the OTHER makes that have acceleration complaints? Sean Kane is a trial lawyer hit man, NOT credible.
if it is such a problem then why did Toyota first create of false cause of the problem then they redesigned their pedal assembly. Obviously there was a real problem that caused them to make a recall on millions of vehicles. They aren't going to fix a problem that doesn't exist.
There are virtually no deaths in other makes attributed to unintended acceleration complaints - yet 52 and counting in Toyota's! weve had 3 incident/accidents locally in the last month in BC due to run away toyotas - it is a very real problem! What about toyota black box secrecy? Why is the auto consumer union in Japan after toyota as well, if it isn't a real problem and nothing more than a US conspiracy against toyota?! KINDLY ELABORATE!
Long before there were "black boxes" cars mysteriously accelerated by themselves, and the cause was usually attributable to THE DRIVER PRESSING THE GAS INSTEAD OF THE BRAKE! Now that age-old explanation suddenly is not applicable to Toyotas , even SOME of the events? because American drivers are become super - drivers these past decades? BS.
Until there is proof of a mysterious "glitch" causing either a stuck accelerator or sudden acceleration (2 different probs) I call foul here.
Clearly you are a Toyota employee if you believe the bullshit you write. Last time I checked, every politician who spoke up for toyota was documented as having stock/business interest in Toyota. Last time I checked the Japanese gov't is going after Toyota and the auto consumer union. Last time I checked, State farm raised premiums in 07 for Toyota owners and warned the NHTSA about Toyota accident anomalies. Are they part of the 'Witch hunt' too?
The Kane and Gilbert Hoax - 1st put rust and corrosion on an 08- 10 car. 2, three individual wires MOVE somehow.- 3, They short to a good ground. 4. The short has to be 200 ohm resistor you have in your pocket. 5. The third wire must short to power ! 6. All these wires must stay attached while driving over curbs hitting obstacles etc. This is one of the biggest Hoaxes in US History - Does NBC use Bernie Madoff as a consultant? NBC did a better job on the Chev pickup Hoax they made in 92.
Finally, they decided to go for a Police Officer's family, and put a remote-controlled-accelerator on your car, much like how they did 911, sacrificing 3000 lives.
You are the chosen one!
And of course, the car caught fire, and the wiring all got burnt conveniently during the accident.
All the driver had to do was shift into neutral and use the emergency brake which is a separate braking system controlled by a cable so even if the main braking system doesn't work the emergency brake should help slow the car down when the transmission is in neutral.
haha this is bullshit americans says that only becouse their cars like Ford or Chevrolet and many others alot of peaple dont buy most of the ppl buy toyotas, so wat im trying to say Americans ARE JELOUSE Thats ITTTT!!!!!!!!
actually, most people buy american cars... on top of that toyota makes the cars it sell in america in america... so its really just another american car...
so what I'm trying to say is that your a fucking retard.
I'm more in favor of new regulations that education drivers to deal with situations like a stuck accelerator, instead of the proposed brake override system.
What if the brake override system malfunction? Then we have a car that suddenly comes to a full stop when traveling at 60mph.
Drivers' knowledge and actions counts MUCH more in these situation than fail-safe systems. One flick to neutral and all of these are solved. That's why the neutral gear is there in the first place!
If the car starts to take off or do something funky, STICK IT IN NEUTRAL and TURN THE KEY OFF. At least you then have control of the brakes and preserve your own skin even if the engine screams itself to death. I just do not understand why panicked people screaming down the freeway out of control couldn't have simply put the car in neutral and regain control.... or do they not teach this in driving school?
this is a totally boicot against toyota from GMC who is in bank-rupcy anyway japanese cars are better than ford, gmc or even worst chrysler they're response for thounsand of accidents and even death. to my opinion american car companies they're just jealus of poor sales income.
Don't forget, Toyota received bail out money from Japan's government. Everyone seems to think the recession has only hit American car companies. And I think you mean GM, not GMC.
If it was just jealous American car companies, Toyota would not have issued a recall in USA, Japan and Europe.
1. If Toyota was really sorry about all this-they would bring back the supra. If they did all would be forgiven and every import happy male between the ages of 14 and34 would love them forever.
2. They could fix this problem AND save money if they replaced the faulty accelerator pedels with new ones AND THEN put the old ones in the new supras! :-D I mean, what are people going to say?- "Holy Shit, my supra goes faster than i want it to! Fucking Sweet! :-D"
my Toyota went grand theft auto and it almost hit a old lady don;t buy cars from people who fuckin bombed pearl harbor so they can get money to bomb it again
February 11, 2010 - - MotorWeek, televisions longest running automotive series, announced today the Toyota Prius has won the top honor of Best of the Year in its 2010 Drivers Choice Awards for making improvements on virtually every front including, fuel efficiency, power and versatility. Prius was a double winner as it also won MotorWeeks Drivers Choice Award for Best Eco-Friendly vehicle.
Motor Week? People's choice? BFD.The VW 1.3 TDI diesel gets over 73MPG. With the lest amount of electronics, complicated drive systems, and oh lets not forget about the $3000.00 battery that isn't so eco friendly when it dies in 5 years.
nothing eco friendly about it. massive foot print to build. 500 volts running between the seats , bicycle tired stretched yaris platformed, shit driving, ugly, overpriced fucking death trap farce that is harder on the environment than a Hummer H3! Only morons buy hybrids! bad for planet and wallet! People have died working on Prius'
Despite a torrent of high-profile recalls that have tarnished Toyota's once stellar reputation, the automaker actually gets fewer customer complaints per car than the majority of its competitors
Toyota ranked 17th among the top 20 automakers in the overall number of complaints per vehicle sold. Toyota had fewer complaints than its American rivals. Ford was number 10 on the list, while General Motors came in at number 11.
These "fly-by-wire", electronic accelerator systems should be outlawed. A mechanical cable between the accelerator pedal and the engine is the only way to maintain absolute safety.
The problem only exists on North American built Toyotas ...always make sure when you buy a Toyota that the first digit of the VIN is a J (built in japan) to get true Toyota quality. Even North American Toyotas are way higher quality than any of the "domestics" (built with mostly parts from China and Mexico) . When Toyota has the smallest glitch the media jumps all over it and blows it out of proportion. If they did the same with GM Ford and Chrysler that would be a very thick newspaper
Audi is owned by VW.Audi's were junk in the 80's.VW rep remained good because the problem was isolated to Audi.If the problem was isolated to Lexus,Toyota would be less tarnished
Absolutely EVERY driver on the road should know how to handle this kind of emergency. PUT THE F'IN CAR IN NEUTRAL. If you do not understand this and do not understand how this would stop your vehicle form accelerating please STOP DRIVING until you learn this very basic principal. I have owned Toyota vehicles for 5 years now and will probably never buy any other type. I take it very seriously to learn about my vehicles and how to control them in an emergency, as should every driver!
FLOOR MATS MY ASS ITS MORE THAN THAT.....U dont think people that are adults didn think bout doing all the things that people saying that they should have did to stop the car...IF YOUR CAR DONT STOP IT DONT STOP ULESS U GET STOPED OR KILLED...its 2010 who has faulty mats come on people......
History will say this is the biggest auto myth ever - there is no doubt in my mind this "sticky pedal" is nothing more than human error. All the Toyotas in question have EDR's - that record if the brakes were on, how fast you were driving and how much you were pushing on the gas pedal - Show me the EDR data from a complainant and you'll find human error 10 times out of 10
Yes they most definitely would - Do you think Tiger Woods should come out and tell everybody his wife was abusive if she really was? It wouldn't get him anywhere. Toyota doesn't see any upside to blaming customers - you're talking billions in market share, they don't make these decisions lightly - the fix is a nickel a car - see my fix at carquestions
If the investigation or evidence(video footage) showed the public she was at fault it would benefit Tiger.Likewise if the NTSA reported Toyota owners misusing Toyota products, Toyota would let the findings speak for themselves and offer safety advice for their dear customers
Tell that to Audi - that is exactly what they did and their sales collapsed for 10 years. In that case it was proven 3 years later by NHTSA it was "Human Error" - lot of good it did them. Toyota will not make the same mistake as Audi did.
Whether it's faulty design or human error their rep is slightly tarnished. However the accidents and scare of a design flaw is much more financially devistating than telling the public to drive more carefully
Lets see - 1000 court cases, all win a million each = 1 billion. If Toyota loses 1% market share of a 12 million vehicle US market for 5 years (half the time Audi did) they would lose 15 Billion dollars if the ave Toyota car was priced at $25,000
It would be a bit like saying Tiger would lose more on tournament earnings than he would on endorsements
Toyota and any other Auto manufacturer depend on a certain amount of sales. If only one million ppl decide not to buy a unit/car that's almost a 10% sales loss. That's huge in today's struggling market. That's why they pay 100's of millions in advertising because a repution can be so fragile and costly
This was deliberately done to get publicity for the new car or the Toyota brand...
That's how ruthless profiteering minds operate-
It is impossible for these problems to occur. Safety checks are done on so many brands of cars, and this problem is an old one from decades ago. They have done it to raise the Toyota name into the media.
Why is it that only Toyota is being attacked or criticized? What about Ford or the GOVERNMENT'S COMPANY GM? Are their cars all clear? without any kind of accidental problems???????Think about that!!!! When Toyota becomes number 1 in America, suddenly this kind of
national movement that was triggered by the media(Especially ABC!!) occurrs!! I feel government's oppression
Why is it that only Toyota is being attacked or criticized? What about Ford or the GOVERNMENT'S COMPANY GM? Are their cars all clear? without any kind of accidental problems???????Think about that!!!! When Toyota becomes number 1 in America, suddenly this kind of

I have enormous respect for the Engineers and Managers at Toyota who are no doubt working flat out to rectify cars with this fault. I have zero respect for the parasitic journalists who have never done a hard days work in their lives who are creating mass hysteria and panic over what is a very minor fault affecting a tiny proportion of Toyota cars.
If the government owns Chrysler and GM, isn't it a conflict of interest or even against anti-trust laws for them to investigate and take action against Toyota for their recent gas pedal/ brake problems? The hubbub today is how American Auto industry is capitalizing on Toyota's problems of late.
I think they are lying. It is a software error. Listen , reboot your toyota computer regularly. Disconnect the battery for 5 mins then reconnect it. voi la.. take it from an IBM employee who works for a stupid big company.
Toyota owners should now well aware of their liability of driving a known out of control runaway deadly weapon on the road.
I do not want me and my family to be victims of crazy kamikaze drivers loyal to Toyota and intentionally jeopardize others lives. I await the court liability precedent on the punitive damages, likely to be in the multi-millions, make sure we can take every penny from these Toyota drivers.
Auto insurers would be stupid to keep covering these dangerous Toyotas.
mmm... i think there's a way to deal with that type of situation just press the brake hard and put your gear into N (Neutral) and when its in a complete stop just turn off your vehicle.
The electronic accelarator is not the issue, they make ( CTS ) pedals for other makes as well, with a simmilar design. The Problem is Toyota's. The Higher end cars, don't have cheaply made elect. Pedals, but toyota puts the same pedals in most models including Lexus. A BMW 1 series pedal is diferent from the 7 series. Any way it looks like its more than the pedal. Toyota grew at a stegering rate over the past 5 years. Analists said in the past their quality would eventually suffer as a result..
when they had issues with their seat belts they blamed the problem on the fact that americans keep their cars too dirty. i drive a cadillac. car of the year 3 years running - 1/3 the cost of your german engineered car. no brainer.
the problem is a computer glitch. it has to do with the "drive by wire" system that is similar to a jet aircrafts throttle system. the pedal is hooked up to a device which has a wire going to an ecu which then goes to the throttle body. due to normal wear from dirt and common junk thats on your shoes it screws up the wires leaving the computer clueless. when the computer is clueless it gives full power no matter what you do. since the breaks cant override the power people dont know what to do...
causing them to lose control and crash. the only reason toyota has not taken care of the problem is that its not guaranteed to happen. also its very very expensive to change the system. so toyota is now thinking of a way to change everything in a cheeper way than it would now.
so to sum this all up toyota screwed up really bad and now they're in deep shit due to their negligence towards such a huge problem that they knew about for a long long time
computer problem. sounds like cruise control software is turning on acceleration and blocking braking software and not allowing driver to manually brake.
Please end the hysteria. The answer will be found by investigative and scientific methods. I'm currently testing this gas pedal and floor mat and can't find anything significant that would make the car accelerate like NBC, CBS and AP suggest - This whole story smells a lot like the Audi 5000 in 1986 - in that case it was determined years later by solid science that it was indeed human error - If that officer in California had been driving a Cadillac GM would be in the news not Toyota
Now Toyota is insinuating that an American Manufacturer, CTS, is at fault.
CTS began making pedals for them in 2005, and has never made a pedal for the Lexus. This is shameful. All fatalities have occurred in the Lexus. Toyota has experience problems with unintended acceleration since 1999.
Sure...... the problem was floor mats until you sent your specs to an American manufacturer.
It was made in Canada - but designed by Toyota, patented by CTS in the US - But I don't think this problem has anything to do with floor mats or gas pedals - I've checked the pedal pretty closely and can't find any reason it would stick - the only other possibilities are a computer glitch or human error
yes floor mats can't be the main problem. im not sure if this is true or not, but i heard that the family that crashed thier toyota in a lake had their mats in the trunk. I think the problem is a computer glitch
carquestions, you are correct. Sudden unintended acceleration is not from the pedal. News accounts in November confirmed that. CTS testing confirmed that in RARE circumstances their pedals had a 2-3 second delay in DECELERATION - not ACceleration.
The answer is in the accelerator module on the engine - not the brake pedal.
This has been flagged as spam show

It all boils down to whether a natural process can cause a resistive short such that (i) the computer doesn't pick that it has occurred; and (ii) that the resistive short acts to accelerate the vehicle. It is amazing that Toyota's engineers and Exponent's engineers aren't aware of a naturally occurring process that can cause a resistive short in tin plated or soldered electronics. Such resistive short circuits due to "tin whiskers" have been found in Toyota's accelerator pedals!!!!!

Sorry, but if you are unable to figure out how to stop your car with the throttle stuck open you are not fit for the road. Many things (on any car) can stick a gas pedal, or throttle. For that matter the ACTUAL throttle controlling gas/air into the engine can really just get stuck.

In the past, he said, Toyota sponsored "secret recalls," asking owners to visit....
guinmaan 1 year ago
.... dealers for vehicle checkups, a ploy that allowed them to replace defective parts and then charge the owner for the work

ABC claims the complaints of SUA "took off after 2002" when Toy went to wire control. But Toy had some wire control models in 98, and after 99 their market share grew dramatically too, THEY SOLD MORE CARS!! Which would lead to more complaints naturally! There is no balance here at all.
kassandrasduplex 1 year ago
When they took off, they also wanted to lower production costs, so they started out sourcing their pedal assemblies. First, a canadian company was sourcing them, but now CTS in India is making them since 2005, which fits well with the models Toyota is recalling. So I'd say toyota started to worry less about quality and how to milk more and more money out of their boom
dhillskier75 1 year ago
"now CTS in India is making them since 2005, which fits well with the models Toyota is recalling. So I'd say toyota started to worry less about quality"
And you think Toy is recalling the pedals because there is some thing wrong with them? There isn't. An independent investigator here on U Tube hase proven that conslusively, he heated one to 250 F, froze it in water, still worked great. Toy is fooling U on pedals for a reason. Floor mats and driver error, zero more.
kassandrasduplex 1 year ago
then explain why the prevalance of toyota's acceleration issues are so much higher per unit built. it doesn't have the most numbers, but the most accidents per car built. since it's drive by wire, it's either the pedal assembly or the ECU, since the floor mat escape goat fooled no one. Either way I'm not buying a Toyota, and it has nothing to do with this, I would never have owned one before these accidents, I could see toyota was going down the road of the big three
dhillskier75 1 year ago

Higher than what? A rolling donut? Please read Ed Wallace's article "The Toyota Witch Hunt" Business Week. The TV media have not reported ANY mitigating context to their audience at all. Suspicious.

STATE FARM WARNED THE NHTSA TWICE - IN 04 AND THEN RAISED PREMIUMS FOR TOYOTA OWNERS IN 07 DUE TO ABNORMALLY HIGH ACCIDENT RATES. kassandrasduplex 1 year ago
if it is such a problem then why did Toyota first create of false cause of the problem then they redesigned their pedal assembly. Obviously there was a real problem that caused them to make a recall on millions of vehicles. They aren't going to fix a problem that doesn't exist.
dhillskier75 1 year ago
There are virtually no deaths in other makes attributed to unintended acceleration complaints - yet 52 and counting in Toyota's! weve had 3 incident/accidents locally in the last month in BC due to run away toyotas - it is a very real problem! What about toyota black box secrecy? Why is the auto consumer union in Japan after toyota as well, if it isn't a real problem and nothing more than a US conspiracy against toyota?! KINDLY ELABORATE!
guinmaan 1 year ago
Long before there were "black boxes" cars mysteriously accelerated by themselves, and the cause was usually attributable to THE DRIVER PRESSING THE GAS INSTEAD OF THE BRAKE! Now that age-old explanation suddenly is not applicable to Toyotas , even SOME of the events? because American drivers are become super - drivers these past decades? BS.
Until there is proof of a mysterious "glitch" causing either a stuck accelerator or sudden acceleration (2 different probs) I call foul here.

The US Government & CIA were debating really hard as to which family to sacrifice for this Grand-Delusion.
Fire-Fighter's family? or Police Officer's Family?
Finally, they decided to go for a Police Officer's family, and put a remote-controlled-accelerator on your car, much like how they did 911, sacrificing 3000 lives.
You are the chosen one!
And of course, the car caught fire, and the wiring all got burnt conveniently during the accident.

All the driver had to do was shift into neutral and use the emergency brake which is a separate braking system controlled by a cable so even if the main braking system doesn't work the emergency brake should help slow the car down when the transmission is in neutral.

Relatively few complain about Toyota- CNN
Despite a torrent of high-profile recalls that have tarnished Toyota's once stellar reputation, the automaker actually gets fewer customer complaints per car than the majority of its competitors
Toyota ranked 17th among the top 20 automakers in the overall number of complaints per vehicle sold. Toyota had fewer complaints than its American rivals. Ford was number 10 on the list, while General Motors came in at number 11.

History will say this is the biggest auto myth ever - there is no doubt in my mind this "sticky pedal" is nothing more than human error. All the Toyotas in question have EDR's - that record if the brakes were on, how fast you were driving and how much you were pushing on the gas pedal - Show me the EDR data from a complainant and you'll find human error 10 times out of 10
carquestions 2 years ago
If it was human error Toyota would never appologize and offer to fix the problem
TheCHEVYNATOR 2 years ago
Yes they most definitely would - Do you think Tiger Woods should come out and tell everybody his wife was abusive if she really was? It wouldn't get him anywhere. Toyota doesn't see any upside to blaming customers - you're talking billions in market share, they don't make these decisions lightly - the fix is a nickel a car - see my fix at carquestions
carquestions 2 years ago
If the investigation or evidence(video footage) showed the public she was at fault it would benefit Tiger.Likewise if the NTSA reported Toyota owners misusing Toyota products, Toyota would let the findings speak for themselves and offer safety advice for their dear customers
TheCHEVYNATOR 2 years ago
Tell that to Audi - that is exactly what they did and their sales collapsed for 10 years. In that case it was proven 3 years later by NHTSA it was "Human Error" - lot of good it did them. Toyota will not make the same mistake as Audi did.
carquestions 2 years ago
Whether it's faulty design or human error their rep is slightly tarnished. However the accidents and scare of a design flaw is much more financially devistating than telling the public to drive more carefully
TheCHEVYNATOR 2 years ago
Lets see - 1000 court cases, all win a million each = 1 billion. If Toyota loses 1% market share of a 12 million vehicle US market for 5 years (half the time Audi did) they would lose 15 Billion dollars if the ave Toyota car was priced at $25,000
It would be a bit like saying Tiger would lose more on tournament earnings than he would on endorsements
carquestions 2 years ago
Toyota and any other Auto manufacturer depend on a certain amount of sales. If only one million ppl decide not to buy a unit/car that's almost a 10% sales loss. That's huge in today's struggling market. That's why they pay 100's of millions in advertising because a repution can be so fragile and costly
TheCHEVYNATOR 2 years ago
Then you you would agree with me after all - its not about figuring out the problem (if indeed there is one) its about not losing market share
carquestions 2 years ago
2000+ complaints and accidents about the same problem over a short period are either a massive conspiracy or an actual REAL PROBLEM.
TheCHEVYNATOR 2 years ago 2
@TheCHEVYNATOR
Real problem.
At least American cars don't go autonomous on killing sprees. Sounds to me like it's the Japanese brads that are crap, not American. :)

This was deliberately done to get publicity for the new car or the Toyota brand...
That's how ruthless profiteering minds operate-
It is impossible for these problems to occur. Safety checks are done on so many brands of cars, and this problem is an old one from decades ago. They have done it to raise the Toyota name into the media.

national movement that was triggered by the media(Especially ABC!!) occurrs!! I feel government's oppression

Auto insurers would be stupid to keep covering these dangerous Toyotas.
jgy2001 2 years ago
mmm... i think there's a way to deal with that type of situation just press the brake hard and put your gear into N (Neutral) and when its in a complete stop just turn off your vehicle.

2000boxter 2 years ago
when they had issues with their seat belts they blamed the problem on the fact that americans keep their cars too dirty. i drive a cadillac. car of the year 3 years running - 1/3 the cost of your german engineered car. no brainer.
apacheaviator1 2 years ago
sounds like bad engineering to me. maybe a little more testing and a little less bullshit.

TOYOTA IS NUTS!!LOL
tochjo772 2 years ago
the problem is a computer glitch. it has to do with the "drive by wire" system that is similar to a jet aircrafts throttle system. the pedal is hooked up to a device which has a wire going to an ecu which then goes to the throttle body. due to normal wear from dirt and common junk thats on your shoes it screws up the wires leaving the computer clueless. when the computer is clueless it gives full power no matter what you do. since the breaks cant override the power people dont know what to do...
WHOO222 2 years ago
causing them to lose control and crash. the only reason toyota has not taken care of the problem is that its not guaranteed to happen. also its very very expensive to change the system. so toyota is now thinking of a way to change everything in a cheeper way than it would now.
so to sum this all up toyota screwed up really bad and now they're in deep shit due to their negligence towards such a huge problem that they knew about for a long long time

majidali19 2 years ago
computer problem. sounds like cruise control software is turning on acceleration and blocking braking software and not allowing driver to manually brake.
chas766 2 years ago
Please end the hysteria. The answer will be found by investigative and scientific methods. I'm currently testing this gas pedal and floor mat and can't find anything significant that would make the car accelerate like NBC, CBS and AP suggest - This whole story smells a lot like the Audi 5000 in 1986 - in that case it was determined years later by solid science that it was indeed human error - If that officer in California had been driving a Cadillac GM would be in the news not Toyota

Toyota wanted to make their cars go faster... this was the wrong way to do it.

InModeration1 2 years ago
i thought CTS was Canada?? maybe im wrong
Hummers222 2 years ago
It was made in Canada - but designed by Toyota, patented by CTS in the US - But I don't think this problem has anything to do with floor mats or gas pedals - I've checked the pedal pretty closely and can't find any reason it would stick - the only other possibilities are a computer glitch or human error
carquestions 2 years ago
yes floor mats can't be the main problem. im not sure if this is true or not, but i heard that the family that crashed thier toyota in a lake had their mats in the trunk. I think the problem is a computer glitch
Hummers222 2 years ago
carquestions, you are correct.
InModeration1 2 years ago
CTS' Plant in Canada made pedals.
AGAIN - CTS DOES NOT MAKE PEDALS FOR THE LEXUS. Lexus models were involved in all fatalities.
The recalls were for model years 2002 and forward. CTS did not make pedals for Toyota until 2005.
Toyota released a business wire Friday morning that said CTS had no fault.
