These successfully offered with FORD & Lincoln. A rare piece of machinery. Yes they were the first Y Block v8 in 56 plus they had the four power options, namely power steering (master Glide), power brakes, power Lift windows and 4 way power seats. These options were gradually brought in halfway through the 1953 model year. They were offered as an individual item or as a total package approach. Include the Fordomatic automatic and yes Mercury had reached a true luxury level. Great cars
@Kirschthollar My daily driver is a 1956 Mercury station wagon with the original 312 y-block, it was rebuilt. It has been the most dependable car I have ever owned! It may not get the pg of a Prius, but I don't care!
@56Mercgal .your lucky to have such a neat daily driver .i live in P.A..and in the town i grew up in is a 56 merc wagon sitting for years and years...the lady who owns it moved around a bit over the years no farther then maybe 15 miles from were she is now...and she had that merc towed to were ever she moved.it hasnt run since that late 70's , but everytime she moved, she had the car towed to were she lived ..its pretty ruff but it is now back in the same town it started out in years earlier
@390merc65 Hi 390merc! Wow, that's cool she still has the car! Too bad she's not (I guess) restoring it. I sure could use the tailgate springs off the top part where the window is!! I can't find any springs at any of the wrecking yards anywhere. I haven't found a source of new ones either! Wonder if she would be willing to part with the springs on hers, I am sure they are probably in better shape thatn mine! Mine are soo weak, they don't hold up the top half much anymore! :)
@56Mercgal i dont think she will part with anything from it..my buddy last year tried to buy the car , but she wont sell ...i remember the first time i seen the car ..it had to be the late 1970's..i was a kid ,,and thats probabaly the last time it ran ..i lost track of the car then one day i went somewere and i seen the car..then years later it was gone..then i seen it at another place..it was popping up all over , but it was towed from house to house....i just passed the car today
@56Mercgal what part of the country do you live in?....in p.a.were i live there is a old junk yard and i would bet he might have the parts you are looking for....the name of the place is [anglers ]..close to dorrance P.A..i dont have a number but if you fish around on the net you might be able to call him ..and come to think of it..wouldnt a 55/56 ford wagon be the same parts??..just a thought
@56Mercgal now you had me thinking...i know my dad had a 56 merc..it was the medalist or how ever you spell it..the cheap merc..2 door sedan ..he sold it to a guy to buy at the time in 1960 a 58 ford wagon ..the guy smashed not to long after he got the car..he was racing it and lost it and into a tree it went ...we had alot of mercs in my family...all good cars
@390merc65 What a trip seeing 'ol Ed Sullivan pitching Mercs! My Dad had a '56 Monterrey... I ruined it when I was 3 years old by taking sand from my sand box in the back yard, while pretending that I was a gas jockey at a service station, and dumped it in the gas tank! It never ran well after that and continually stalled and clogged the carb with dirt. But we traveled west on Route 66 to New Mexico in it, and I still remember the distinctive metallic "ping" sounds the push button radio made.
@TheEldoradoKid ed was the man back in the day ...funny..my dad also had a 56 merc , but that was just a bit before my time ,then he bought a 58 ford wagon with the 352 and i still have the owners manual for that sitting in my glass case , then came the 65 montclair ..and also a 69 monterey ,,i cant say i never did anything to any of my dads cars except one day as a kid i lit the lighter in the 69 and when it popped out i held it to the steering wheel and burnt a mark in it
Ed was sponsored by Lincoln-Mercury from 1949 through '58.
