But as far as Van Halen Roth numbers vs. Van Hagar I know for a fact that recording industry standards & formats had a lot to do with the fact that Roth era sales were so high. I personally owned most the early albums on 8-track, Vinyl, Cassette (actually 3 cassettes of Van Halen 1) and then on Compact Disc. The man is 63 years old and he still sounds as good as he did 30 plus years ago.
He also has one of the best if not the best attitude in Rock and Roll. A lot of lead singers and guitar players that I've met and or played with, only hear themselves IMHO. I have to say, I absolutely LOVE reading these comments. I saw Sammy with Boston 11/6/78 in the old Boston Garden. Ticket price was $7.50! Haa. I must say Sammy did blow away Boston, and I'm a big Boston fan. Sadly Sammy has become a bit of a poser lately, but in the 70's and early 80's, he RULED. This guy just ROCKED every house! Couldn't beat Sammy back then! Ohhh I saw Frank Marino a couple of times back then too... SMOKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gotta love Frank

Hagar's solo material was on par with the best of Van Halen. When he joined it should have been one of the greatest collaborations of all time and it totally flopped. He never regained his form.

Well "Pal" I am talking about sales....that's how you judge if a band is successful. If people don't like them they don't buy their shit and I don't care what you "doubt" it's a fact that VanHagar was more popular than VanHalen and sold out more concerts and sold more CD's For what it's worth I too like the original VanHalen better than with Sammy but I love Sammy's solo stuff. Anyway there was nothing wrong with the "quality" of VanHagar anyway.

One of the albums with Hagar I think it was OU812, sold more than ANY VanHalen album ever. if it wasn't that one it was one right around that time. 5150 was there first #1 album and that was with HAGAR....they sold more than 80 million records worldwide and ONLY 37 million with Roth. If you can do math that means they sold MORE with Hagar.

HEY DRIFTER one thing I forgot to point out to you....5150 with SAMMY HAGAR was VanHalens FIRST PLATINUM album...that's right the FIRST!! The earlier ROTH Van Halen stuff sold more AFTER the Sammy Hagar era.....Hagar actualy got MORE people interested in VanHalen and it helped them sell more records but the FIRSt PLATINUM album they had was with HAGAR!

I'm not posting to argue the Hagar vs. Roth thing - it's tired; played out. But as far as Van Halen Roth numbers vs. Van Hagar I know for a fact that recording industry standards & formats had a lot to do with the fact that Roth era sales were so high. I personally owned most the early albums on 8-track, Vinyl, Cassette (actually 3 cassettes of Van Halen 1) and then on Compact Disc. All of my Van Hagar albums from 5150 on, were purchased only once on CD. I bet this is true of most fans. Peace!

his name's Phil Peel ( although the spelling here is wrong, he has a sort of scandinavian spelling to his sirname. I saw them as a band in '79 in Manchester England. They used to do a sorta guitar dual, as on their live and clear live album, and yeah, he more than holds his own don't he!

Sammy Hagar Live All Night Long is the best live album I've ever heard. Make It Last/Reckless, Red, Turn Up The Music, Young Girl Blues. First time I saw him was '78 opening for Boston. He kicked ass.

Sammy pissed me off when he went to Van Halen. I liked him better on his own. Denny Carmassi, Gary Pihl, Bill Church (the Electric Church). Love the Red Album, Nine on a 10 Scale, Musical Chairs (his best to me), Street Machine, and of course All Night Long. As a dedicated fan, I felt like he left me out in the cold.

New years eve 79' oakland arena. Sammy opens up and goes 2 hours. Then comes Heart the Headliner. I can't tell you how much of a downer heart was, Dog and fucking Butterfly?? are you kidding me? They sucked. We left. Haggar absolutley rocked playing Montrose stuff as well. He never needed V.H. but he is a free spirit and brought something to them which lacked...A voice and eddies ability to play more keyboards.

DLR was great with Van Halen waaaaaayyy back in the days. Hagar equally kicked major ass on his own and with Montrose. I never felt the VH / Hagar combination worked - for me anyway. BTW - Hunkola get a life.

Look, dummy.......it's well documented that Eddie was drunk off his ass during all of the Dave years and most of the Hagar years, so he was easily manipulated by the lead singer.......so the frontman had a HUGE influence in Van Halen........Dave-era was brilliant, and the Van Hagar years SUCKED DICK.......so you gotta blame Hagar for most of that.
What bothers me most is that Sammy deliberately tried to make VH fans forget that Dave ever existed........that was inexcusable faggot behavior !!!

@Hunkola You have it totally wrong. One of the reasons why Roth left (and there were a bunch of them) is that 'Jump' gave Eddie the excuse to explore new music (i.e. shitty music from his Casio). Roth wanted to rock. Don't believe me? Compare 5150 with Eat 'em and Smile, which is a more rockin' record? Eddie wrote the music, Sammy wrote the lyrics and Don Landee recorded the sounds. Don't blame Sammy, that was all Eddie's shit.
