From what I've read, although Australia was extremely protectionist and Socialist for a long time, at some point in the '80s and '90s they made a sudden turnaround and really opened up the economy. I don't know the details, though.

New Zealand when through a similar turnaround just before, that's supposed to have been even more extreme. Supposedly, they have one of the freest economies in the world now.
