Hello, Mark, this is luke from Berlin. I was wondering what to look for in facial characteristics for models in order to take a great photoshoot or how to "see" how someone is photogenic or not. Thanks.
Excellent work as usual :-) I tried reviewing comments before I posted this to make sure my question had not already been asked but to be honest I ran out of steam wading through it all. So I hope I am not repeating a question.
Can you tell us about hair and makeup..? Who is responsible for it when you are shooting model porfolios and when you hire a model for a shoot.?
Good video. I agree that having a model sign a release depends on the situation. I do a lot of freelance work and I've published pics of photoshoots I've done, particularly with musicians. I've also published pics taken at events, for example models at fashion shows. All without a release.
I've also done personal portraits with non-professionals. But, those I wouldn't sell or publish without a release.
@tomkalbo You don't get it. They started the video out by talking about a shoot where the model hires the photographer. In the end the explain that in this case they hired the model. Sorry, if a model hires you, she is NOT required to sign a model release unless she wants to. Requiring it is wrong and amateurish. I stand by my comments. They handled the opening badly and I would have expected more from Adorama.
Great video...actually, one of the best from this serie and about business photography in general because it shows many important issues about what goes on "behind the scenes".
Thank you Mark for all the useful and clear informations: a very good teacher for any photographer worldwide :)
Great video! I'm a photographer and i use those tips a lot! (And there are some that i didn't know about!) ... Sharing this! Keep on! BTW: Great dancer! :P
Isn't it great that Mark spends his own money and time to help us out? I, for one, sure appreciate all he does for us. And yes, I know, that his job to help us out. But he could have chosen to go a different route. But he has stuck with us these past couple of years.
Why would you buy music and make a playlist... it would be cheaper (free), easier and less time-consuming to just ask the model for her favorite artist/band and create a station in Pandora?
Also, the "never touch the model" is not an absolute rule written in stone. It all depends on the connection, relationship and comfort level you develop.
@AlainAnhTruong In Lightroom, when you click on a picture, there are two little flags beside the starts. If its a winner then click the flag without the "X", but if you know it isn't a winner then choose the flag with the "X". Hope that helps!
This video is disturbing and amateurish. I would have expected a lot more from Adorama. Why would the photographer be asking the model to sign a release when she is paying hime to shoot her? That is offensive and unprofessional. When a model hires a photographer she is entitled to her privacy, plain and simple. A photographer has no right to exploit her likeness simply because she hires him. I could understand, perhaps a promotional release allowing him to use th eimages in his portfolio.
@PhotoZulu The video is very informative and not amateurish at all!! With regards to exploiting the model...they are hiring her to model for them in this video, not the other way around. A release form may work both ways: the model(s) may sign to have the right to use the pictures themselves or to give the photographer the (exclusive) right to use the pictures...or whatever they will agree upon in the form. This is of course to avoid any problems later...Im sure you know this already :)
@PhotoZulu There are just so many issues with what you wrote...I don't even know where to begin. Take some time to think about what you typed and maybe you'll find them yourself.
@Charleroifa I agree, ive been told always sign a model release form. As well as to contact a lawyer to make sure. I know one guy who had his drawn up by his lawyer.
Great Video! I just have one question.. when releases/contracts are signed - who keeps it? or do you and the model/client sign one copy each? Someone please explain...
Hey Mark, thanks for all these tutorials, amazing amazing stuff. Quick question, what kind of External Hard Drive is that you were using in the end of the video? Thanks :)
@snapfactory Mark you should mention the DVD from creativeLIVE about the 3day course of a fashion photoshoot you had... it was amazing and very well worth buying!
A lot of great tips!! Thank you for making this very helpful video. I am slowly working on getting things headed into the direction of working with models. Until now most of my work has been wildlife, landscapes and nature stuff but now I am looking to expand. Keep up the great work Mark, Your videos have been so helpful and I always learn something new no matter what the subject is.
Another great tutorial Mark. Approaching a prospective model can be very intimidating for a novice photographer who works out the home/apartment, perhaps meeting in the local park is better and will help set the model at ease. Having an assistant for both the photog and the model can also be very helpful. Have you patented those dance moves?
What was with the dancing groove beat at that end.
Its going to be one of those tunes that gets stuck in my head ARGH!
Awesome video mate!
Love your work, you have been a huge inspiration to me and all my photographic tutorials, I mention you in just about all of them and direct people to watch your episodes because they are some of the best i have seen online, along side Kelby.
