  • suicide for people with epilepsy

  • i loved this video back when it first came out. watched it stoned on many a weekend. music videos today just don't compare with the "golden age" of the 80s and early 90s.

  • i have this on a VHS and the strobe light in the background is so crazy, i could just imagine someone watching this on MTV and having a sezure

  • SEIIZUUUREEE!!! Love Alain though!

  • i think i just suffered a stroke

  • sweet music video! hillel's got some good moves :)

  • Hillel gets a lot of screen time in this vid., prob more than anyone else

the vid. looks like it could be more recent than 1984

  • Hillel was the fucking man, wish he was still around to grace us with his glorious funk sounds

  • what an amazing great video ! I wish I was already born in 1984 !

  • to think that Alain was in Queens too

  • ALAIN =D!!!!!

  • that was one of the funkiest seizures i have ever had

  • Holy shit! It's the original Bevis and Butthead!

  • @TheLeatheryman Are you talking about Steve and Dino, the presenters?? yeah , amazing guys !!!! they present a lot of vids in the earlier community channels as PBS , you can see more vids with them on backporchvideos .

  • Hillel Slovak OWNS!

  • What ever happened to Chris, anyways? He's like the only one no one ever heard from again.

  • Great song. Alain sounds great as always. BTW, I love the fact the song title is messed up in the song's own video.

  • Why did Hillel stay in this cheesy 80's band?? from the other vids I've seen he was a very hendrix inspired, hard-edged blues guitar player...totally opposite of this stuff!

I think its more respectable he died playing the music he was MEANT TO, rather than play forever with this band...anyway, just my opinion

  • omg, haha, I did not know about this. Very eighties

  • Is it just me, or does this sound different from the album version?

  • It's a cool song :)

It's interresting to listen to this, cause i've heard alot of Alains work through Queens of the Stone Age, chris Cornell and Desert sessions and early Red Hot Chili Peppers is some of the best stuff I've ever heard =)

  • One of my favorite tunes from the 80"s!

I hope Alain Johannes finally gets the respect he deserves....

  • Mine dot matrix.

  • very cool first view for me considering i only know alaine and jack from eleven view it is kind of like looking at anthony (chilis) in his singing contest days this is quite good never knew of hillel much over the hil signing off

  • i love you for posting this stuff....

  • 0:46 I love how Hillel Slovak moves when he just rocked all his stuff out!!! It's amazing!! I want to play with me guitar like him

  • does anybody know how the cinema effects are done at 2:07 or at 2:50?

  • does the vocalist knows how to play guitar?

  • @k0stil That's Alain Johannes. Give him a search; he most definitely knows how to play guitar.

  • Where did you find this man?! I have been searching for over a decade for music from What Is This? and have had no luck till today. They were actually really good. I am surprised they didn't take off big in the New Wave scene. Thanks for posting this video.

  • Marioag20 is right, flea was never even a member of what is this but of fear.

  • he was member some years of Anthymn(What Is This ), i know, before they signed , i put to make more easy the search

  • You are wrong. Flea was a part of What Is This when they were known as Anthym. When Anthym changed their name Flea stuck it out with Anthony in the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The rest as they say is history.

  • Alain's career should have went on to super stardom, he has a great voice. His band "Eleven" was so underated. To anyone that reads this, do yourself a favor and buy the album "Thunk" by Eleven. The album is a masterpiece!!! But never got the exposure is deserved!! I have had the album since 1995 when it came out, and i still listen to it on a regular basis.

  • @TeddyLong00 yeah the most underrated goddamn band of the past 20 years I say

  • Umm he's played iive and recorded with Chris Cornell, QOTSA, and is now touring with THem Crooked Vultures. Search Google for TCV's Austin City Limits performance. It's phenomenal. The audience stands the whole time I'd say he's got a great career, just not as a lead singer.

  • Hillel looks like he's busting a nut at 2:31

  • That's Chris on bass, not Flea.

  • Slovak rules!!! RIP

  • I wasn't a huge fan of the early chilis stuff, but how the hell couldn't he figure out which band had more potential... even when the chilis were just messin around...

  • @soliloqy , i think ,knowing to Alain and his carrier that this band had potential ,but sadly disolve.check the other songs in video responses

  • @soliloqy - are you kidding? in early 1984 the Chili Peppers were nothing. they were a 'fun' band for Hillel, him and his 3 mates taking a shit-load of drugs, playing small clubs, 5 or 6 songs wearing socks on their cocks. they had zero potential. it's easy to look back with hind sight 26 years later. but the reality was... Anthony Keidis was a homeless junkie who barely turned up to rehearsals, where as What Is This / Anthem had been going since 1979 (with a singer who had it together) .

  • I know the history quite well, and from what I have read there were sparks even in the beggining as they got invited back to clubs from just improving... Your right this singer had his shit together moreso at the time, and it was the safer play...

  • that is not flea

  • the 80s music should be erased

  • i don't think so .there are very good bands and almost all of our faves bands evolve and start un the 80's .And this band sounds cool.

  • @desertblitzkrieg yes its truth there are exceptions but tv was full of george michaels madonnas

  • OMG WOW! its hilarious knowing what became of all these musicians and then seeing this...lol stupid 80s pop.

  • interesting...

    proto-QOTSA,

    AND proto-Chili Peppers.

  • @BagpipeHustler It's very odd to see Alain play in Them Crooked Vultures and than see this.

  • yes, and he formed with the other guys on high school and he taught to Flea to play bass....

  • and proto-Eleven(Alain Johannes,jack Irons and Natasha)

  • Jack Irons Rules!!!

  • Did anyone know that Alain is the BEST melody maker, rare tune finder, strangest and most sadest guitarist ever lived. :))

  • i'm happily agree with you ;-)

  • Someone should change this discription... Yeah, we have Hiilel, Alain and Jack, but the other guy isn't Flea.

  • i know ,he's Chris Hutchinson,i put in more info.Flea go away before they signed.i put his name to made more easy to find the band ,ok ;-)

  • the guys at the beginning look like they come from a comic book

  • what a song!!!!!!

alain and the rest funky persona

    Hillel et Jack

  • I've been looking for anything on What Is This for years. Now I know why Hillel and Jack went back to their roots with the Chili's. Thanks so much for posting.

  • Me encantaaan! Yo quiero un disco de ellos!

  • hay q conseguir si tienen un disco!

  • haha this is so random! what year did this song come out?
