  • as a easter music learner,, i can feel the efforts and progressions of scales.. i bet the ppl who commented offensive stuff are really blunt,,, coz even a complete singer wudnt disgrace any learner...

  • Learning sargam it benefit to train our vocal or sur . And what is the benefit for learning Raag ?

  • Thank you for posting this. There is sadly, very little information about methods for singing Indian music. COMPLAINERS - If you don't like it, then you should do something about it: make a video, post it, and teach people. I am sure, if what you teach is better, your viewings will be high. Your complaining simply leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and does nothing to change the way I feel about having learned at least a little about your music. ( ^ - ^)v

  • thank you i was searching for it for a long time

    thank you very much bro

  • pppppleaseeeee stoppppppppppppppppppppp singing . pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee please u fuck my hears and my brain . plz

  • Comment removed

  • What you were just singing was raga 'Bhairav' and not 'Bhairavi' They are two very different ragas. :\

Ragas are not scales. or even comparable.

And get your 'Ga' and 'Ma' .. they sway all over the place. Please practice .. this thing you attemp is not a piece of cake. It got better somewhere in the middle of the video though..

  • @raghavmishra1729 That was not even Bhairav!! She was singing totally different raga maybe not even a raga!

  • The singer does a great job here - don't listen to the negative comments.

It is easy to say stupid things on this public space and hide in a hole. It is a form of cowardice.

  • good to see that indian classical is so popular worldwide

    u tried well

  • Having been a student of Indian Classical since I was 5 years old, I can tell you that a lot of these judgements are overly harsh. For the 2 minutes I watched she does largely remain in tune. She is defintely trying too hard to not sound American tho - her pronounciation is over the top and strange makes it unpleasant to the ear. She's doing just fine for someone who likely grew up with an american accent and no exposure to indian culture

  • Please, don't listen to those people!!! I do appreciate all of your teachings and recognize your effort to transmit them. I'm very fond of your videos and they're highly instructive to me! Thank Your very much for sharing those lessons!

    Namaste.

  • you have done a commendable job, don't listen to some of these rude people. I really appreciate that you have taken the effort to understand indian classical music. keep up the good work!

  • very nice and helpful! thank you !!

    appreciate the effort

  • Sounds like there are a lot of experts out there. Where are the native Indians teaching Hindustani singing on YouTube? If they were offering a superior product, maybe all the critics posting here would helpfully refer them to the non-Indians here looking for information.

By the way, most Euro-American classical musicians think theirs is the only "real" classical music out there. Without education, that misconception will remain in place. Snobbery is not helpful.

  • What!!

minor Raag in sort of minor scale??... Its a Thaat in itself...

  • Hindustani raga Bhairavi it is a sampoorna rāgam (scale having all 7 notes. Singing Bhairavi & singing great bhairvi can two different thing. I think she was okay, some one who has worked 3 to 6 months on singing. Mastros spent life time to perfect ther skill. Bhairvi notes are as follow:

    ārohaṇa: S G2 R2 G2 M1 P D2 N2 S

    avarohaṇa: S N2 D1 P M1 G2 R2 S

  • This is a scandal!Terrible!Go to India to learn! There to help you!I sing Indian songs, so raga, so morning raga, yaman raag! I teach Indian vocal! Therefore I dare to write, this is terrible!

    Deva Prashad

  • Everyone should just be quiet, it may not be perfect but its obviously done with passion, plus i highly doubt ANY of you could do it so yeahhhh.

  • @dontbeabetch4 the point is to teach it correctly...you teach it improperly, people watching who are trying to learn will get the wrong idea. and she's clearly not trained well in voice. so the question is, who taught her?

it is not to put her down, and it's good she has passion and all, but she's not just posting a fun video to display her talent. she is trying to teach. teaching doesn't only take passion. it takes knowledge and skill to be a teacher, and she doesn't have them both.

  • What is the name for the instrument which she is playing? It isn't sitar, which she plays in another How to videos, right?

  • @Nictorpago It a tanpuran.

  • the effort is commendable...however, the title is not! sorry!

  • Here's the thing: in carnatic music this is called sindhubhairavi and in hindustani it is called bhairavi. Good effort, obviously no one is perfect. keep working on it i guess

  • ok it took me all day watching the videos to learn the notes but i finally have it figured out.

  • I wish the notes were on the screen so I could possibly keep up ;-)

  • lol, very good comedy show

  • music is not so easy pl. practice and practice more.

  • music is not so easy pl. practice and practice more.

  • music is not so easy pl. practice and practice more.

  • This is Raaga Bhairavi, technically, but I'm not used to hearing vibrato in classical Hindustani music.

Still, music is free and one should express themselves to the best of their ability.

  • i have learnt indian classical from a well trained classical singer for 12 f**king years... fyi Bhairavi is a morning ragini it has Re, Ga, Dha, Ni Komal.... which i couldnot find in your singing it was the most discordant and cacophonous indian classical"ish" music i have ever heard.... one sincere advice for u... STOP SINGING

  • Where do I go to start learning? This lady sucks. I can sing better than this in my car. Is there somewhere in the US to go for REAL lessons?

  • :)) This lady's sa re ga ma is teriffic! like rap music

  • @introsequence

If you're concerned with real lessons, STOP GOING ON YOUTUBE!!!!!!!!!!!! You suck.

  • @KidAvalanche111 What was the point of that? Evidently youtube is a legit resource, someone with information got back to me and I've since coordinated "real Lessons" with an expert in Philadelphia. so, if you're concerned about getting some real leverage STOP GOING ON YOUTUBE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You suck.

  • @introsequence

The point of that was to step in a say something to all you douchebags attacking a women because she didn't provide what you were looking for. Not her fault. She was just doing her thing, and you decided to attack her and run your mouth off. Congrats on finding lessons outside of youtube. I hope you feel good about yourself. Assmonkey. Live and let live!! Or you get a slap from karma.

  • haha this is the most hilarious thing i watched today! posting it in facebook haha! bhairavi? are you kidding me? i dont think that was any raga i am familiar with..

  • @phymaniac are YOU kidding me? if you dont know rag bhairavi, what do you know about classical music????

First, learn about music, then comment here.

  • I agree that she has a lot to learn...........but at least she is trying.........I have heard Indian musicians who has no problem with the pronunciation...but are completely pathetic in their gaayeki ang

  • I've heard Indians singing western songs and believe me it goes both ways!

Vitriolic comments just shows your immaturity and a lack of an appreciative attitude. jsbali - why don't you post your own videos then and then 'constructively' correct her. Give the woman a break, but I agree with MrBassxtrm though. I wonder what gharana she belongs to (if any)...

  • better learn before teaching, otherwise where we will end?

  • What a disgrace to Indian Classical Music. Disgusting.

  • she is using vibrento in Aroha and Avroha!!!!!!!! how can she do dat???

  • come on guys she is a nice lady..she is embracing our music and culture lets encourage her

  • My God... Your effort is appreciated, I'm sure, but most of the notes you sing are out of tune. Also, there's no Bhairavi-ang in this video. This is meant to be constructive: Please, learn first, then post or preach.

BTW: Please, do not reffer to them as "minor" or "major" scales... these are simply thaats.

    Keep up the effort!

  • @MrBassxtrm I agree completely with you, even her Sa is not clear.

  • @MrBassxtrm i agree, effort is appreciated, but she shouldn't be teaching without being both fully trained and therefore knowledgeable and skilled.

but she didn't say they WERE...she said "sort of minor and major", just to make some connection for the people who are only familiar with western music.

and i'm sure she didn't want to go into a full discussion on thaats since that isn't what this video was about, but regardless, as we agree she shouldn't be posting this up in the first place

  • music is culture you have to be in that am not talking about u r color but it is part of life lot Indian classical musicians are living in out india they are some of less performers too why that means they are away from roots

  • First LEARN.

    Then PREACH.

REMOVE this video from here. Its a DISGRACE to classical Indian music.

Please. Do NOT make music lovers like me sit through this kind of trauma.

  • Who MADE you sit through it?????

  • @jondow14

Jon, you are an asshole. Maybe she's not exactly a Bollywood pop star, but she has passion for what she does. She didn't MAKE you do anything. You decided to sit and listen, and then attacked her because she wasn't awesome. YOU are the only disgrace here. You and every other douchebag on this page telling her not to play or share music. Elitist prick.

  • @jondow14 it's insulting ma'am don't kill our music... u need to spend atleast 20-25 years under the tutelage of a GURU right from your childhood only then u r in a position to teach somebody 'hindustaani classical' no offence

  • Please listen to some of the accomplished singers from India, who by the way are also on youtube, before you do something like this...This is sheer truama !

  • @ 2.29 something got stuck up her ass !

  • I am sure she sounds better is the sounds come out from her other end !!!!!!! disgusting !

  • What happens at 1:40 ruined it for me. Everything before is alright ... she is a good student of hindustani music but of course not everyone compares to bhimsen joshi.

2:13 etc. is also OK, but it lacks the juice. It's just empty sound and therefore sounds silly.

I think this is a general problem: when a student tries to illustrate the principles, it comes out quite strange. Instruction is better left to the masters who have a lot of experience.

  • never let her sing again indian classical music again she cant forget her western music nodes

  • And also I agree with the other users that she is insulting the Indian classical music unconscious.....

  • This is not a raag bhairavi example as it should be.....Bhairavi means only use the notes what this raag has and no other notes. She is singing also the komal Nikhaad (Ni) what is wrong....this note doesnt belong to Bhairavi but to Bhairav...

  • Raoul - you got them reversed. Komal Ni is Bhairavi and Shuddha Ni is Bhairav.

  • Yes,you are right, thanks for the correction...

  • This woman has a good theorical knowledge. In fact, she's an ethnomusicologist. This aspect of research is for sure very interesting but it's not because one has a Ph in ethnomusicology that it means that he can teach this music.

THEORY IS SOMETHING AND PRACTICAL SOMETHING ELSE... IF YOU REALLY LOVE THIS MUSIC WITH REAL DEVOTION AND AWARENESS, YOU SHOULD MAYBE STOP TO TEACH THIS KIND OF THINGS. PLEASE REMOVE THIS VIDEO.

  • yes, please remove this video from this site, you are insulting yourself and the indian music.

  • shut up, shut up, shut up

  • No offence to this lady, but this is example of how NOT to sing a bhairavi !

and for that matter 'Indian classical Music'

  • Oh dear... if one wants a Bhairavi Chalan go to my site... Or for that matter any beginner in Any music School in India. This is sadly not a joke as I thought

  • Hey u re rite man!!!! we should nt discourage her... I think she s still a learner...... she will be better 1 day or the other .... All the best lady:)

  • You bunch of IDIOTS....this is the reason we are hated all over the world....rather thn welcoming some1 into our culture/tradition...is this how you treat thm...by insulting thm whle they are upholding your culture and its traditon??? A**H*les....

The importance hre is the drills, she is sharing. For the eager ths is more thn enough to be on thr way!!! Very sad you could not see the light.....

  • Tell me if the "drills" are completely incorrect then is she upholding the culture or rather distorting it? This is the equivalent of teaching Martial Arts as a style of Street Fighting or Boxing. Are they all forms of fighting? Yes. Do they all preserve the Eastern Martial Artist's culture and tradition? Absolutely not. I say if even one person watches this video as an intro to ICM then we have lost one person that can preserve and love this artform. This is damaging no doubt to the art.

  • This woman is totally misguided. There is nothing wrong in wanting to share knowledge, the problem here is that it is mis-information and therefore betrays the very subject that it is meant to promote.

  • Lady ,my request is pl remove this video clip.Your wish is good, but the notes are absolutely incorrect.Talk, but but do not demonstrate It is very difficult to become a GURU !

  • poor performance

  • she isnt that good, she is off shruthi ... ask her to pls stop this... she is spoiling hindustani music ...

  • I know some westerners who can sing Hindustani raga well, but this lady is unfortunately not one of them.

  • Your passion for this music is touching and it seems that you have a good theorical knowledge but it's not because you have a Ph of ethnomusicology that it means that you can teach that music. THEORY IS SOMETHING AND PRACTICAL IS SOMETHING ELSE...

PLEASE RESPECT THIS MUSIC AND YOUR GURU. PLEASE? IF YOU REALLY LOVE THIS MUSIC, STOP THIS PSEUDO TEACHING . THANK YOU !!!

  • U ain't gt wt it takes 4 Raaga. U r presumptuous. Sing for your own pleasure. Big difference between Raagas & the rest. It is like MJ v Boris Christoff. If you can't tell the difference than you need new ear drums & brain surgery. Listen to Maria Callas and/or Pavaroti first. Then have a 4/5 year old's Vocal Chords implant & work for another 15 years. You might but chances are not very high. Voice is a gift of God for a few. Us mortals don't. I was trained 5 to 20, didn't make it. Accept it.

  • Pls do yourself a favour and remove this material from YT. That you are passionate is without doubt but that you incompetent to teach is equally without doubt. You are simply insulting yourself. First learn to breathe properly, learn to position your tongue correctly and not as if u are singing western opera etc and then come back to learn Hindustani music and pls don't teach however sincere your effort.

  • You aren't enunciating.

  • very very good

  • 100% for Effort. Only 25% for Voice Training. She goes Besoor on many occasions.

  • sorry this is horrible !!

  • I agree with some of the negative comments, but at the same time, absolutely appreciate her videos.

Keep in mind that she was not brought up (at least I think so) listening to Suprabatham in the morning, and other such songs based on raagas.

Her pronunciations are as close as I've ever heard a foreigner come to, and mind you, these are terms that not many Indians can get right either!

No need to compare her to Indian experts. Foreigners never compare our rock bands to Guns N Roses!

  • I don't agree, listen to Warren Senders' pronunciation, I repeat, a Westerner can definately do better... why do you all think it's just because she's a Westerner? Gauhar Jaan's mother was a Westerner and she was a famous singer in India.

  • Yes, you are absolutely right. One can do anything depending on one's dedication. A Westerner may have a pronunciation at par with or even better than an Indian as in the examples you have quoted.

All I'm saying is that I feel that she has put in good effort into this video series, and we should try to appreciate it. While some may have nothing to learn from this video, others may have a world to learn from it.

  • yes, I understand that you can get some information and probably she has a good backround as an ethomusicologist, but if she had the humility to go to a teacher who could follow her from scratch rather than famous masters who only train advanced students she could have done better. This is the mistake many Weterner do in my opinion.

  • And yes they DO compare them to the best

  • I appreciate her enthusiasm in teaching but really she sucks, I have seen many 6-7 year old kids in India doing much better than her.

  • I was first so caught up with just her outward presentation & chuckledJust imagine...before...we had to either enroll in a music school, or look out for experts in those fields who were busy giving concerts. Not bad for someone who has an open mind and appreciates the joy of learning.

  • Ouch! This is absolutely awful. Lady are you seriously delusional or something. Your inflections are all WRONG and your timing..and you're nasal

  • i cant watch it after 1.23 , she is killing our indian art .. gosh ..

  • probably some people in India told her she can do so..believe me, when she is in front of Indian musicians most of them don't have the guts to tell her that she's not good at this...

  • All of the vicious bile that people are spewing are getting thumbs UP?

    That's youtube I guess...

  • this is just basic sargam, not bhairavi

  • I agree that this woman is an amateur and her voice is pitchy, but as far as I can tell there is no one else is even trying to teach this type of music on youtube. Certainly not to English-speaking audiences. I'm not saying this makes her better, just... somebody else post some hindustani lessons please.

  • I agree, some Westerner should help us and show that we are not allthat besur like her... my first teacher was a Westerner and she's very good and in-tune, and Warren Senders is also a good example, but not all had the same dedication...

  • Comment removed

  • <3 keep eriching your life with sound..in the very least you will inspire others to search classical indian music out and learn about other culture or become more familiar with their on.love.

  • Very very nice please post more lessons I am very interested in learning. Keep up the good work!

  • one should keep the aakar with the same opening not opening and closing the mouth like she does and moving her head up and down, she lacks the basics...

  • lol, at 1:23 she goes crazy and you just want to start covering your ears. She is like tone deaf

  • jesus.. this may be ok for Europeans.... definitely not for the people who ever heard little bit of indian classics.

please do not destroy the sound of god!

I am from Sri Lanka. but cannot bare destroying this wonderful art which gifted from heaven to bharat!

  • I'm European but know Indian music and this is NOT ok for me!! It's not just a matter of culture!

  • it should be learnt and listen bro.. cannot "just" listen.. even for me.. some raga's still I dont like to listen.. because the knowledge I have is not enough..

  • Thats great you are from SriLanka but I don't see how it has any bearing on your critique. I don't think one has to be from India to understand how ragas are meant to be sung.

Please don't be prejudice. It only shows ignorance and negates anything that follows.

    Peace!

  • hay.. bro LostInTheRythms, no no no.. I never say that only Indians should follow.

but there is a "tone colour" in a note classical singer sings 1000s of mini notes in a simple second.. these cannot be explain through a dgital text.. it should be feel in to the nerves. :-)

you can play Mozart's symphony same as it is.. after years and years of hard practice,

but you never would able to play Ravi Shanker's solo!!!.

  • Tonal accuracy is all that matters, and she doesn't do a half bad job of trying to get it.

Cut her some slack or post your own videos, guys.

  • she's been learning for many years and 'does not do a bad job' is not enough...

  • stop uploading videos... you know nothing ... dont make your self stupid...

  • hey lady, get yourself a south indian and learn the fundamentals of carnatic music...then you teach and share your wisdoms with others..loll...its jz half baked ideas....

  • Any romantic fellow would be running away after hearing you sing what you describe as Bhairavi LOL!

Your music sucks....forget about teaching it to others....initially get yourself properly trained

  • ur Sa in mandra saptak [high Sa] sounds kinda off

  • definitely bro.! she is totally out!

  • at least she's very dedicated. it's her accent.

  • hmm yes I do agree with you too.. but i wish she would have more better idea about her sinigng. at least she could use a proper hindustani singer with her.. she could teach while the singer sings.. it will keep her decent as well.

  • listen to Warren Sanders...a Westerner CAN do much better, trust me!

  • I couldn't find Warren Sanders on youtube. You have any links?

  • listen to yourself first ,lady.

  • ...woah.

    OMG.

The part at 1:30 is just like...what the hell?!

It almost sounds as though she is mocking it.

    -_-

Though I suppose she's not doing that on purpose.

expertvillage needs to understand that you need an actual Hindi/Tamil vocalist to be able to teach this type of vocal music properly.

    =)

    GET ONE.

    - Lavinia.

  • not true, I know a couple of good Westerner singer/vocalists, you just need to practice hard and properly!!

  • Oh, sorry, I think you misunderstood me.

Hindi and Tamil are the languages, so I meant a professional vocalist in those streams of music.

    (:

  • Eeks!!

  • Damn that was BAAAD ! LOL !

  • Damn that was BAAAD ! LOL !

  • I'm from India, and this is terrible. She isn't even singing it right. This is laughable!

  • What does you being from India have anything to do with your critique?

  • heh...maybe if this um singer had simply mentioned their love for this music and not dove into being a vocal reference of it...it may have made for a more respectful representation. One wonders if any time had been spent in learning its fundamentals. But, I dare say that the style she is attempting requires a heck of a lot of training and discipline. But with all this said, I say it is still a wonderful event for someone to at least try what it is they're passionate about. To see if it's do-able

  • TEST

  • make a search on her on the net, she even holds a degree in India!!! I think they must be more selective...

  • This is so wrong. This is such a terrible representation of Indian classical voice. I don't know whether to laugh in shock or be offended at her audacity to think that she could teach something she clearly has no understanding of. She sounds like a mad woman.

  • TERRIBLE..But shows we all can sing

  • ahahaha!!! she wants to teach something??? ahahaha!!!

  • for gods sake woman

    this is terrible

i hate angreziis who think they can sing

  • she's not 'angrez' she's American I guess, and the fact that she's not perfect it's not because she's a Westerner, it just means there isn't good practice... please, listen to Warren Sanders and you will see that even a Westerner can sing Indian classical with good practice!

  • Oh please dont patronize americans by saying they are not "angrez" because the meaning of angrez is ANY westerner. The fact of the matter is that she sucks and needs to stop "teaching" WHEN SHE CANT EVEN SAY "SA" CORRECTLY.

  • suniye, main bhi angrez hun (matlab ki main adhi italwi aur adhi angrez hoon). Main bhi sochti hoon ki yah mahila bilkul besur hai, uska uccharan bilkul ghalat hai aur bahut riyaaz ki kami bhi hai, lekin yah baat sahi nahin ki sab 'angrez' ek hi hain.

  • yeah well to me it seems like you are a very confused italiana, you said it yourself YOUR AN ANGREZI, so dont go around thinkin your the damn "guru" of all indian culture.

  • half of my family is British, maybe it sounds difficult to you, fortunately I'n not confused, maybe you are and I'm sorry for that... 'guru' on youtube is not in the sense you think, anyone who has to share something can be that. Things such as Hindustani music take a lifetime to learn not to mention master, so I'm just a humble admirer of that tradition, this does not mean I'm completely clueless. Anyway, I think i's no use talking since you seem to have too many prejudices.

  • Besur throughout. I am no classical music expert, but her off-key singing does not require any training to detect. Her accent is also killing any beauty in her voice.

  • she's very nasal and cant sing to save her life. absolutely awful

  • Expert Village?....hmmm

  • (I don't mean to sound too critical...you're doing a nice job. Just be careful that you don't mis-teach people.)

  • She is ok although she goes off-key in the beginning. Also aaroh avroh is not what makes a raga, but its the chalan or pakkad which is the essence of each raga. That should be taught along with the aaroh and avroh...

  • I'm pretty sure this isn't Bhairav. Bhairav is supposed to just have re and dha komal, the rest are shudh swaras...It sounds kind of like you're singing ga komal as well. Also, I think it's a little confusing to refer to ragas as 'major' or 'minor'...bhairav does have a sort of 'minor' feel to it, but I think people who are trained in western music might take it to mean that it's actually a minor scale...major and minor are harmonically based terms that don't really apply to indian music...

  • You are right about Bhairav, but this is not Bhairav she is singing but Bhairavi, which has all the notes komal form. You are right that western music has diatonic harmonization applied to all scales, which is not far from how indian music is also structured. The difference lies in how the notes are follwd which makes it different from each raga. Take for ex; Puriya, Sohni and Marwa, all of them share exactly the same notes of scale, but the vaadi and samvaadi is diffrnt as is the progression.

  • duhhhhhhhhhhh..i know that...again..bhairavi is a thaat.....

  • u are my guru! ok not really, i rather not sing.

  • its not s r g m p d n s....that will be the tat part..to introduce bhairavi...n s g m d n s..accending....s n d p m g r s....deccendig...you accend as a malkaus..miss teacher...

  • bhairavi is not a rag...its a tat....

  • All THAATS have corresponding raags.

  • Are you sure this is the Bhairavi. But you did a good job anyways now the all the indians should know how gross they look when indians sing songs in english and try their level best to sound like western singers. Jay Sean, this goes out to you.

  • Aweful....

  • very well done for us western residents to learn Thank you

  • are you drunk?

  • Absolutely right information, but not a good enough learning aid to beginners. Sur is not strong enough, and it is very important to hear the right suras when one is beginning.

  • So why dont you upload some video on the youtube for beginners

  • You guys suck, Yeah she has an accent and it might sound funny to you, but she is doing ok and serves as a good introductn to rank beginners. Stop complaining.

  • agree with u.

  • tooba tooba tooba ????

  • it is a good try for bhairavi. but she needs to bring patience in her voice by stressing on each note longer

  • she is so be sura herself. she can't keep control of her won voice. and she is reading the notations wrong but.she keeps the pitch right. the flow of sound is right.but the wording is wrong.

  • wording sounded right to me, where did she go wrong?

  • hey mam watch ur sur a bit....

  • the theory is correct, but the singing and emission is completely wrong... anyway good for beginners to get an idea, but I advise beginnes not to imitate this way of producing sound...

  • admited in the garbage playlist!

  • spare our ears !!

why don't you go and learn some singing before teaching ?

if this is what you teach, students better beware and run....far away from this village...

  • Fantastic piece of video
