Prices were bid up to artificial heights by temporarily low adjustable rate mortgage payments by an absence of any lending standards, and by speculative buying. The artificially low arm payments reset upward, the government and lenders reimposed lending standards and tightened up on credit. Buyers turn into sellers, sky high real estate prices came crashing back down.

Their standards were tighter than most of the market and after the GLB act, the market became saturated with lenders. Each one undercutting the others to make a deal. Loose standards didn't matter to them because they were just going to sell them as CDO's in the secondary anyways. That's were AIG comes in...

@LDV089 I work for Coke. I make $10 an hour lets say. If soda is 2 dollars normally, then you tax Coke a dollar, give me the dollar, then Coke costs 3.50 the next day and I now make $9 an hour. How is this helping the middle class? Of course the wealth can't be redistributed efficiently because you have to now pay the bureau who is redistributing it, funds get lost in the process, politicians neglect the programs, people who don't need or deserve the money get it, prices rise, etc.

What impresses me is the absolute sense of individualism. When he talked about that school, they applauded. When he talked about a national improve which would include that school, they applauded. For people complaining about the economy, is was during the bush era that all of our financial woes came to light. Obama was put into office to make reforms, and you've been complaining about him since day one. You can't make reforms by cutting social programs - those programs are what will help get us out of our slump. Also, you can't expect the economy to be perfect when Obama came into office in the worst recession we've ever had. Get over your partisanship and take some econ classes.

@AroundSun Yeah whatever...anyways I'll start easy. Once upon a time there was prime and subprime borrowers and nothing in between. Subprime doesn't mean poor people that can't afford a house. What we consider a prime borrowers were those that that had at least 80% CLTV, DTI of 28% over and 36% under and reserves of 6 mo. PITI. Sub is anything less. Prime meant you got a good deal, sub you got fucked. That was before the GLB act. Do you understand this much. I'll explain if you don't.

Prices were bid up to artificial heights by temporarily low adjustable rate mortgage payments by an absence of any lending standards, and by speculative buying. The artificially low arm payments reset upward, the government and lenders reimposed lending standards and tightened up on credit. Buyers turn into sellers, sky high real estate prices came crashing back down.

Their relationship with the treasury ENABLES them to sell securities at a yield below that obtainable on the most highly rated private issue! Freddie Mac had the advantage of being able to legally elevate its securities to the status of obligations issued by the U.S. No private sector competitor can make that claim. This was all predicted in advance anyway by Schiff.

@AroundSun Most of the loans that were made were nonconforming anyways. Stuff that FNMA or FHLMC wouldn't even touch. Their standards were tighter than most of the market and after the GLB act, the market became saturated with lenders. Each one undercutting the others to make a deal. Loose standards didn't matter to them because they were just going to sell them as CDO's in the secondary anyways. That's were AIG comes in...

Then promised a safety net in case those risks went sour, which of course they did. @LDV089 I work for Coke. I make $10 an hour lets say. If soda is 2 dollars normally, then you tax Coke a dollar, give me the dollar, then Coke costs 3.50 the next day and I now make $9 an hour. How is this helping the middle class? Of course the wealth can't be redistributed efficiently because you have to now pay the bureau who is redistributing it, funds get lost in the process, politicians neglect the programs, people who don't need or deserve the money get it, prices rise, etc.
