@toddvandongen I take it that the remark was about his weight? So i guess you have played with Haggard for 20+ years, have grammy's and emmy's on your shelf. To name a few people the man has worked for:
Vern Gosden, Kenny Rogers, Don Gibson, Ray Price, Hay Bale, Brad Paisley, Albert lee, John Jorgenson, Vince Gill, Asleep at the Wheel, Dwight Yoakum, and that is only about 5% of the people he has worked with all over the world. So let's hear your credentials.......Hmmmmm????
One of the greatest pickers ever!!! This man knows music and plays it correctly. 1920, he's danced with it. 1950, he's had sex with it. 1990, he shot it. Fantastic Picasso of a musician.
Hey ckchambers...thanks for the response, Yes I "meant" what I said about Redd. He is definitely a SPACE AILEN!!! He is an incredibly talented guitarist! What kills me is the "size" of his FINGERS...they're HUGE and yet "still" he is AMAZING!! Tell you another amazing guitar player....Search on Youtube for "CLINT STRONG" ...and you'll see ANOTHER amazing player!!
A selfish as it sounds; I'm glad he isn't some superstar. Not because he doesn't deserve it. But, because the more popular something is, the more dumbed down it becomes. Music always loses its quality once it tries to appeal to a much broader and idiotic audience.
hey schlusselmensch, why don't you think for one second before you write something so idiotic and childish? you probably know deep down inside that you will never be able to play anything on a guitar that would make a guy with redd's talent even notice your pathetic existence for one second....so you have to make yourself feel a little better by making some asshole comment about him being overweight.....awesome......
Redd Volkaret has GOT to be a "SPACE AILEN!!!" No earthling can do this on 6 strings!!! Wow!!! I've been playing for 40 years and this guy makes me want to "burn" my guitar and take up CHECKERS!!!
I got to spend some time with Redd last time I was in Austin learning how much work I still have to do on the guitar and he is about the coolest guy on the planet, so that alien remark makes a bit more sense when I think about it.
I f'n love Redd.. I stalk that man when i am in Austin ...which is as often as I possibly can get there.. If you are a musician and you go to Austin you will be like me... on over load for the entire time you are there....The place is utopia if you like music or are a musician..
Wow Memories... I used to play with Big George and the Nighthawks in the early 80's. Used to love watching you and George do some jammin.. Take Care.. Patti Lynn
Redd is great! I had the opportunity to play with Redd often when he and I both studied with Big George Moody. He's hilarious, on top of being a tele master. Thanks for the posting.
Redd is the offspring of Django, all of those nashville cats, Roy and Danny. Its not pretty to look at, but so lovely to behold. Like Leonard Cohen, "Forget your perfect offerings...there is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in..."
Thanks stipecountry! To quote Dylan, I ain't no rooster, but I know what I like...and I am the first to admit that I've got a lot of gaps. Glad to see your passion and championing of these performers. Gonna look them all up (though Vince Gill I know. 'Fraid he doesn't turn my crank) and broaden my horizons. Grateful to your pointing them out. Redd's solo work: rock solid!!!
Anna1755: There are actually quite a few videos of Danny Gatton (another great guitarist, who took his own life some time in the 90's), Albert Lee and Vince Gill. One video with those three together is a performance of "One Way Rider." They all solo and they all do great. Vince Gill's playing is quite close to Albert Lee's, which does makes sense. Gill has often stated that Albert Lee influenced his own playing more than any other guitarist.
Anna1755: How about Redd Volkaert along with Brad Paisley, Brent Mason, Albert Lee, John Jorgenson, Vince Gill, James Burton and Steve Wariner? It's been done on Brad Paisley's song, "Cluster Pluck!" It was great...though I still love Volkaert's solo work!
I can definitely see why Brad Paisley likes this guy's playing so much!
In fact, Volkaert is going to be playing on Paisley's next album...that shall be a great album with the artists that are going to be making appearances, including B.B. King.
nice buckaroo lick at the end. Redd is one of the finest pickers alive. Cindy Cashdoller sounded great also, as usual. Redd always plays with excitement and takes fun chances. Nice stuff.
the steel has been edited and mixed with the video, while I have no doubts that Redd can play what is in the video ( I saw him live and he kicks butt) I don`t know about Cindy. But even if in studio it still is a great job.
Taste and technicality is more important than speed. Will ray for example proves it! Although speed is great if its delivered right! I thank god that he has givin me all of these.
I just got Redd's "TeleTwang" video. It's great, well produced and awesom sound. And it has several lessons from Redd. He's very funny in lessons. Highly recommended for any guitar fan!

This really blew me away -- and I laughed my ass off when Redd stuck his face in the camera during the drum solo...lol! Thanks so much for posting this vid and I hope Redd stays healthy and gets wealthy. What a great player and a great band!
Both great players (Redd and Gatton that is). But as far as just burning the frets off a Tele. I think Gatton in the Redneck Jazz Explosion era was the king and I have yet to hear anyone top it, including Redd!
You're right--Red's great, but Gatton was the undesputed KING of the TELE--along with Buchanan,Lee,and Guthrie Trapp--these guys didn't just play Teles, they WERE Telecasters!!
I wouldn't say Gatton is the undisputed king of the tele. He is definitely one of the greats, but there are a few others just as talented that can give him a run for his money.
well, when you're as good as Gatton was, there really is no difference among world class players like that, just different styles--by the way, check out Guthrie trapp!
