A turbo is never a supercharger, regardless of historical terminology. if you say blower I'm expecting you're talking about a roots style which last time i checked was twin screw. Blow off valve or (BOV), is the sound you're hearing. Im not that much of a gear-head but from what i know the BOV releases pressure from the turbo. The one you're hearing releases pressure after you lift your foot of the gas. this is common in aftermarket cars, but in cars built with turbos right out of the shop you hear no BOV. YOu'll hear the turbo spooling when you gas it but thats about it.

A turbocharger is an air compressor, so as he step on the throttle, the TC builds up compressed air pressure (boost) that is forced into the engine = more power, When you shift however, you disconnect the engine crank from the differential, so for that split second, boost build-up is not necessary since no power is needed. So when he shifts, a valve opens and releases the extra extra boost pressure as highy compressed air. That's what the noise is.

The bov releases what that would otherwise bounce backwards and forwards between the turbo and throttle body which some claim is damaging to the turbo's bearings. It has nothing to do with your description.

theres the turbo and the bov(blow off valve), while the turbo is used to compress air to the engine (you get faster acceleration) the blow off valve or "bov" releases the heated air rapidly, that prevents for the turbine of broking and/or engine overheating. the sound you hear after he shifts is either the turbo or the bov, depends how loud is it. when he's on a shift u can hear the turbo, this part the bov will not be heared cuz is compressing air, after he shifts u can hear the turbo and bov.

there's also different types of force induction systems, such as the turbocharger (commonly used) and there's the super charger, while the supercharger is different because its attached to the engine and uses the engine's rpms to be powered, the turbo just takes the air around and pushes it to the engine because the engine demands the air to run, i prefer supercharged cars because they get faster acceleration, but the turbo is cheaper and you don't need to maintain it as the supercharger ;)

The BOV has nothing to do with preventing over heating. When you get off the throttle in a turbo car, you get a wave of pressurized air that bounces off the throttle body and come back into your compressor turbine which can damage your turbos bearings. BOVs prevent that. And your description of turbos vs superchargers in a little off. Superchargers use a belt driven compressor to create positive manifold pressure while turbos have exhaust driven compressors. It is debatable which is better.

You aren't wrong about it taking heated compressed air away but that is only a side effect of blowing off the compressed air not the reason for doing it. As for reusing heat? That is the opposite of what you want to be doing. Excessively heated air in your combustion chamber leads to detonation which kills engines. That is why you put an intercooler between your turbo and intake manifold. It is to cool your intake charge allowing you to run more boost reliably and make more power.

pluss supercharger is a general term, most people dont know this but a turbo is a supercharger. supercharger just means a forced induction system. theres turbos, blowers, twin screws, reciprical (i dont think i spelled that correctly) but turbochargers are the most radical in that there the only ones driven by exhaust gas instead of a belt from the engine. As for the BOV issue, its to stop compressor surge that kills turbo and/or engine life. diverters valves to recirculate some of the unused
