Most of the comments seem to be made by folks who have not even listened to Obama's entire speech...or just parrot things like "Obama is a communist".
The speech lays out a vision of our society that balances a free market system as well as how government can provide a social safety net and enable opportunity.
Most of all the speech was intelligent, logical and sincere...and these properties are largely lacking in Congress and definitely on the far right and far left...

His Obamacare, Dodd-Frank, anti-tax cut, pro-tax-hike, FTA-procrastination, dollar deflation, partisanship, HHS regulations, and EPA regulations, have done nothing but scare away capital and jobs away from America.
One ? How many people that sat through this diatribe were democrats, how many were independents, how many were republicans and how many were libertarians? Obama repeats a dozen times how everyone should follow the same rules. What a joke. His own party even got to read the rule book once last year and then they turn around every day of the week and break every rule in the book... the Constitution. Why doesn't Obama make everyone follow the rules in that book by vetoing any and all bills or laws that cross his desk where Congress has tried to go around or overstep the rules or their powers in that book? I believe every president should serve only 1 6 or 8 year term and not run for re-election. I liked Obama's speech. I believe that he should have never compromised with the GOP on the Bush era taxcuts because they haven't stimulated the economy. I believe his re-election chances get stronger if unemployment drops to 8%, he vetoes the Bush tax cut extension, and if Republicans stall on the payroll tax thing because he has them backed into a corner.

The problem with this economy is basically this: demand/confidence. If you cut the cost it takes to hire someone, you would love it and will have motivation to hire someone. If you put extra money in people's pockets, they are gonna spend it. An exention of the payroll tax can reduce unemployment, which is what the GOP is scared of.

The speech lays out a vision of our society that balances a free market system as well as how government can provide a social safety net and enable opportunity.

I believe every president should serve only 1 6 or 8 year term and not run for re-election. I liked Obama's speech. I believe that he should have never compromised with the GOP on the Bush era taxcuts because they haven't stimulated the economy. I believe his re-election chances get stronger if unemployment drops to 8%, he vetoes the Bush tax cut extension, and if Republicans stall on the payroll tax thing because he has them backed into a corner.

Saying that the Republicans don't want the payroll tax to expire because they want to benefit the rich doesn't hit on the spot. I'm not criticizing you. The problem with this economy is basically this: demand/confidence. If you cut the cost it takes to hire someone, you would love it and will have motivation to hire someone. If you put extra money in people's pockets, they are gonna spend it. An exention of the payroll tax can reduce unemployment, which is what the GOP is scared of.

Reagan raised taxes during the 1982 recession and it didn't have a bad effect on the economy. The totalitarian state is code for this evil black man wants to control our lives and everything we do. That mantra is not going help Republicans unseat him in 2012. High unemployment and a stalled economy will, which is what they want. For me paying an extra $15 a month won't hurt me or most people if the taxcuts expire.

The Federal Government takes in 44% revenue from the income tax 37% from Payroll and Medicare tax, 10% from Corporate taxes 6% from Excise (cigarettes etc) and 3 % from duties/fees. The top 5 percent of taxpayers paid more than one-half (53.8 percent) of all individual income taxes. This is just a fact sorry but there it is.

The lowest level wage is minimum wage which for years and years stayed at the same level, because big corporations could afford to hire lobbyists to fight against a minimum wage raise. The second-poorest fifth paid 20.7% of their incomes. So no matter how you slice it how we collect money to run the various governments is screwed-up. You think the flat tax is a scam but what you have right now is just criminal anyway so why not look at a think called the "Fair Tax"?
