In my opinion, it's kind of like a "sexual tension" relationship. Stelena is definitely the more mature couple. No matter what stefan did or does, he and elena will always have each other's heart.

Writers change their mind. I agree, the story is ultimately Stefan/Damon but if Stefan and Damon can't maintain a relationship despite their "romances" then they haven't grown at all since 1864.

So I am betting Bonnie with the help of her mother will be the ones to open the coffin next episode. But I thought she didn't become a vampire in that flashback episode, but she was the original witch. And I am guessing since Klaus killed her she won't be very happy with her son and she would probably be the only other one strong enough,hopefully an ally, to help kill the bastard

From the season 1 dancing scene which really showed their chemistry for the first time to Isobel telling Stefan that Damon was in love with her the path was set. That history would repeat itself only worse because they had in their way reconciled only for that to fall apart as happens in any love triangle story where two fall for the same person

Like Julie Plec said: "Both of them are equally committed to saving Stefan because Stefan sacrificed himself for them."
