There has never been jazz guitar player to compare with Wes. HIs octaves created a new form of playing that's been greatly imitated, but never equaled. Mr. Benson does a nice job though. Wes is just beautiful. Thanks for posting this.
My God, this is an amazing song all around, but his break into the solo is incredible. To think that he did this all on the spot...total improvisational genius! Wes demonstrates here that he is THE MAN when it comes to jazz guitar. God bless you Wes Montgomery.
i could listen to wes solo all day, he has a keen imagination and the most perfect technique ive ever seen... especially when he does his solos in all block chords... it really stops me in my tracks no matter what im doing at the time
No one has cut WES yet! Grew up listening to these LPs - his sense of what notes not to play is staggering in itself. Blues- drenched playing with rare beauty on every front, and technique to burn.
@snickpickle I have heard that he used amp called STANDEL with 15 inch speakers all solid state. These amps were originaly built for Country musician playiung steel or laptop guitars to achieve the cleanest sound at high volume.
@paulyrulo Wow thats amazing, you are very fortunate to have such a talented Mom. Its also amazing that she got to me all those jazz greats from the jazz era. Thats a blessing, having the experience to study with Sal Salvador.
@paulyrulo Thats great that Johnny Smith inspired you to learn the guitar at such a young age. Thats cool that you like Johnny and Wes equally. To me Johnny Smith played the authentic type of Jazz . Johnny Smith was a great soloist through continious chord changes, like rhythm changes, and didnt shy away from full chords when speed was required. Wes was a chord vamp type of soloist, and he didnt use the full chords like Johnny did. Thats Amazing that your Mom sang while Johnny accompanied her.
There are and have been a lot of great guitarists out there but nobody makes playing the guitar look so effortless and easy than Wes Montgomery, who sits back smiling, sometimes looking half asleep, as he plays some of the best guitar ever seen! A six-string treasure, this guy is....
Amazing..seemingly effortless..indeed the greatest Jazz guitarist to have ever lived. The sound we are now hearing that is so apparent in the way so many other guitarist play, was pioneered by the Great Wes Montgomery
In my humble opinion, the man playing in this video, Wes Montgomery, demonstrates aptly what Jazz guitar really means, not to take anything from all the other great musicians out there, but his styling and phrasing shows what's possible with imagination and talent! Thank God that this man existed when he did!
it is amazing how he plays with just his fingers I play guitar and bass and I mostly play bass and have trouble sometimes when I take big breaks from guitar with my altered picking with a pick so I think this would be a good approached for speed on guitar like I have on the bass
the story behind his playing with his thumb only was actually that when he would be up late playing and practicing his wife would get mad because the noise was too loud and she couldn't sleep, so he decided if he played with his thumb as opposed to a pick he would get a much more quiet sound, and he just used his thumb ever since
That's interesting Johnny.. But HOW do you know it's true? That story has been repeated many times by reputable sources. So, I think it needs some substantiation on your part...
Thank God for Wes.. and by the way, having a thumb or ears like Wes means nothing. Maybe you should look a little further in your investigation. Is it not obvious as to where it originates?
As I study some jazz guitarist via, youtube, it seems Mr. Montgomery's Technique is more single string pluks, rather than contorted chord fingerings, would anyone agree with this idea?
Miles - he's actually plucking with his thumb, not with a pick - and you can see he's constantly moving from one string to another, often skipping strings.
I couldn't have said it better...You're right on about that technique of his...I still don't know how he pulled off all those lightning-fast runs without a pick, even though I'm looking right at it...
To guitarttiman...Wes was good, but in my opinion, and many others Johnny Smith was the king...When you listnen to Johnny Smith you can tell he was more advanced musically ,and technically.
his fingers look like they're double-jointed, amazing guy, one of the absolute coolest dudes ever - uptown style. Heard of a lot of Wes in Hendrix's playing, not a musician though, what do the musicians think?
I'm into black metal and death metal but I must say, Wes Montogomery is a phenominal guitarist. He has the feel and groove that no one else can come close to.

Well it's (somewhat) common knowledge that duplicating Wes' technique is basically impossible unless you have a double jointed thumb like he did.
