When I was in Uruzgan with the US Army in 2008, I was lucky enough to do several missions with the Aussie RTF in Chora, Tarin Kowt, and Deh Rawood. Damn good troops, somewhat crazy, but nonetheless excellent soldiers and extremely entertaining.
Prolonged the attack? The only thing that is prolonging the attack is allowing the evil doers safe haven (Pakistan, Somalia, Yemen etc.) It was Somalians who were going to shoot up holsworthy. Somalians are more of a threat than Afghanis we need to invade immediately we could use half a dozen SAS blokes should only take a couple of weeks.
As an American I claim that our soldiers are the best trained and our SOGs (SF, Seals, Delta, Rangers, 160th SOAR, etc) are the cream of the crop, but the Australians are great soldiers. They have served bravely alongside Americans in our current wars, even when other countries we counted as allies balked or bailed. The Aussies died along side us in Vietnam and WW2 as well. I would like for that to never need to happen again, but am glad the Aussies have been with us and may their fallen RIP

Hand signals aren't much good in a pitched battle. The enemy already knows you're there, especially after you toss in a grenade. Plus what omorell said. You gotta be flexible, and if you show a hand signal and the guy at the end of the stack doesn't see it because he's watching his sector, then it's not much good.

The US don't manufacture them, much less export them. How is it illogical to suggest that they get these weapons locally, when the entire region has been flooded with them for the last 30 years. Take this info into consideration and don't dismiss it, research it for yourself. The US only exports military weapons manufactured by Colt in the 5.56x45mm round caliber.

The US M16/M4 uses it, UK SA80 and Australian AUSTEYR uses it. The 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge (.308 Winchester) is also in use with the GPMGs of these and many other countries. But Russia's AK47/AKM rifles have always used the short cartridge round of the 7.62x39mm, which aren't compatible. The Russian AK74 series uses a 5.45mm round.

Well ProudAussie (good name too mate!), it all starts with interests and passions. Find out what you're interested in and passionate about, and if you combine these with an inquisitive nature you'll go after learning all you can about these things you're passionate about. So it's good to have broad general knowledge, and it is good to specialize in a few things also, and get good in them (to become a "jack of all trades and a master of one (or 2 or 3))".
One more thing mate. Reading a bit doesn't mean you have to become a bookworm. Everything in balance I reckon. I love jogging and long distance hikes out in the bush. I think that it's good to exercise your body and your mind. Magazines like Wartime (put out quaterly by the Australian War Memorial) and other stuff are a good source of info aswell, and fairly cheap too. Cheers man.
Wartime and Australian Defender are about $8.50 & $7.50 each respectively. Yep, every 3 months, but it is a very high quality mag. Covers things from the Boer War to present day.

Oh and have you heard of these books sold at the Australian Post for like $5.00 and there is like 11 books i think of lots of Australian Military (mostly army) history.. the Captain of my Cadets Unit told us all.. its supose to be very well illustrated, you should check em' out, im gunna.
So if you're interested in military history it's good to hit the books, perhaps you might start by going into your local Dymocks, Collins or even 2nd hand book shops and looking in the military history section. If you want to learn about the Aussies on the Western Front there's plenty of books on that which have excellent detail. There's no other way to get this knowledge except through reading. Reading the world news section of the main daily papers teaches you a lot too that is more current.
So for me this began with a real thirst for knowledge. I had so many questions about many things, even recently the question came in to my mind "...why did Russia invade Afghanistan in 1979?" In this case, now that I finally have a computer of my own and the internet, it was easy to look up on google. It's about learning to ask the right questions, and then seeking out the answer until you are satisfied. Sometimes the answers will lead to more questions, so you investigate those also.
And before you know it, you've built yourself a solid base of knowledge which comes in handy at some of the most unexpected times and in some of the most unexpected places. Cheers fella, and all the best with everything.
The U.S supply weapons to Pakistan and the Taliban. How are such a minority number of students with no military training are able to withstand 6 years of beating from the so called "special forces". I applaud the taliban for taking over 90% of afghanistan in less than two weeks. Yet these heavily armed so called special forces are taking over 6 years. Here's some facts to factor in to this equation. If you research this you will find that most of the weapons used by the Taliban have been in circulation for some time. Upon simple inspection of photos of these militia the weapons they are holding are easliy recognizable as being Soviet era AK47/ AKM assault rifles.

No regarding these "students" beating USSF, etc, actually they lose the majority of "battles". As with Vietnam, it is the continuing stream of people eager to volunteer to fight with the Taliban that means they have an endless supply of recruits. They also use IEDs to inflict many of the coalition casualties without having to engage them in costly battles they will most likely lose. They need only outlast the political resolve of NATO, once NATO withdraw, then they will take over again.

Actually mate, lets think about the culture thing for a moment. I can pass on a few examples regarding cultural transition affected by the US generally. Take the english language as an example, Every nation over the last few centuries developed its own unique slang. Idioms that were common place in Australia 30 years ago are becoming less used, while those of US origin that were unheard of even 10 years ago have replaced them in the TV generation. Culture is transferred through exposure.

Our boys were shot down off the Malay Peninsular in a Catalina Flying Boat. The first Aussie engagements with the Japs on the ground were in Malaya and then Singapore, which fell in Feb 1942 (Pearl Harbour being Dec 1941). I understand that the US was being defeated badly in the Philippines around that time.

As an American I claim that our soldiers are the best trained and our SOGs (SF, Seals, Delta, Rangers, 160th SOAR, etc) are the cream of the crop, but the Australians are great soldiers. They have served bravely alongside Americans in our current wars, even when other countries we counted as allies balked or bailed. The Aussies died along side us in Vietnam and WW2 as well. I would like for that to never need to happen again, but am glad the Aussies have been with us and may their fallen RIP

We know the US, UK, Saudi & Pakis supported them heavily in their pre-nascent days as the Mujahideen of the 1980s until the USSR pulled out in Feb '89. Importantly, not all former Mujahideen of the 80's are Talib supporters today, though of course some are. What involvement the US had in Afghanistan after the Soviet withdrawal would be interesting to know.

chocbiz, firstly I did not say that it is necessarily the governments of these Islamic countries that are openly supporting the Taliban. Though someone Iran was providing powerful AT mines to the Shi'a insurgents in Iraq, and powerful AT hand grenades (check them out in my favs channel- they're not favourited because I applaud their actions, it is purely there out of interest.) The US don't manufacture them, much less export them. How is it illogical to suggest that they get these weapons locally, when the entire region has been flooded with them for the last 30 years. Take this info into consideration and don't dismiss it, research it for yourself. The US only exports military weapons manufactured by Colt in the 5.56x45mm round caliber.

haha, don't worry mate, like most people I only bite when someone is nasty or impossibly dense. The standard NATO round is the 5.56x45mm SS109 round. The US M16/M4 uses it, UK SA80 and Australian AUSTEYR uses it. The 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge (.308 Winchester) is also in use with the GPMGs of these and many other countries. But Russia's AK47/AKM rifles have always used the short cartridge round of the 7.62x39mm, which aren't compatible. The Russian AK74 series uses a 5.45mm round.

Find out what you're interested in and passionate about, and if you combine these with an inquisitive nature you'll go after learning all you can about these things you're passionate about. So it's good to have broad general knowledge, and it is good to specialize in a few things also, and get good in them (to become a "jack of all trades and a master of one (or 2 or 3))".

So if you're interested in military history it's good to hit the books, perhaps you might start by going into your local Dymocks, Collins or even 2nd hand book shops and looking in the military history section. If you want to learn about the Aussies on the Western Front there's plenty of books on that which have excellent detail. There's no other way to get this knowledge except through reading. Reading the world news section of the main daily papers teaches you a lot too that is more current.

In this case, now that I finally have a computer of my own and the internet, it was easy to look up on google. It's about learning to ask the right questions, and then seeking out the answer until you are satisfied. Sometimes the answers will lead to more questions, so you investigate those also.

Here's some facts to factor in to this equation. If you research this you will find that most of the weapons used by the Taliban have been in circulation for some time. Upon simple inspection of photos of these militia the weapons they are holding are easliy recognizable as being Soviet era AK47/ AKM assault rifles.

They are destroying cultures in a very subtle way, most people now have to learn English because of the USA, Mainly because of their dominance of movies and television shows.
The USA puts trade tariffs on countries that refuse to show their movies, poor Mexico had a thriving movie Industry which was destroyed by the USA by refusing to give aid unless they allowed it.
The other English speaking countries are mainly unaffected but Europe and Asia are becoming increasingly Americanised

Actually mate, lets think about the culture thing for a moment. I can pass on a few examples regarding cultural transition affected by the US generally. Take the english language as an example, Every nation over the last few centuries developed its own unique slang. Idioms that were common place in Australia 30 years ago are becoming less used, while those of US origin that were unheard of even 10 years ago have replaced them in the TV generation. Culture is transferred through exposure.

I'm appreciating what you're saying here mate, but the first Aussie casualties to the Japanese where killed at the same time the bombs were falling on Pearl Harbour in real time. Our boys were shot down off the Malay Peninsular in a Catalina Flying Boat. The first Aussie engagements with the Japs on the ground were in Malaya and then Singapore, which fell in Feb 1942 (Pearl Harbour being Dec 1941). I understand that the US was being defeated badly in the Philippines around that time.

It was the USN that stopped the Japanese from capturing Papua New Guinea at The Battle of Coral Sea.
