  • I'm sure the check was there on the chance that he won, so that he would immediately spring it on that guy. IMO, real.

  • What would of been a more 'sensible' way to win would have to pinpoint a number, such as eight, as he did and put an equal 1000 pounds on each of the neighboring numbers to eight like thirty and so on...

  • as others have said, i don't even think it was in a real casino, but a sound stage. whole thing could have been rigged with magnets, but designed to lose, so long as he was close, it makes Darren look expert but still human. Fun gag still i suppose.

  • I've used enough cameras and wireless devices to know when you lose signal these days, the video quality begins to pixelate, or it just starts giving bad frame rates. The "static" effect was cheesy but I REALLY FUCKING LOVE the humongous 180 grand check at the end!!

  • @bradkrit It might have been an analogue camera system on UHF, which will give snow if out of range. Only digital links pixelate basically because they are total shite, although they take up less bandwidth, which is the ONLY reason for digital anyway. Apparently quality no longer matters. (G7HMJ)

  • he said it was mainland Europe, so it would probably have been 5k in Euros that was bet.

So assuming that everything is true and honest and well, the show would have to cough up the difference between 180 k Sterling and 180 k Euros, or whatever European currency was used.

  • Perfect ending to the series. It's very well put together. Just staged enough looking to cause questioning (the video effects are suspicious), but still somehow somewhat believeable. He has to go though so many tries to get his results, maybe he just wanted to give a live experience of that first shot.

  • the guy at the end with the big check for 180000 pounds was probably to give to ben but of course, derren lost so nothing happened really.. derren lost the bet so ben didn't receive the check.. simple as :P

  • he is an actor

  • I think the end with the check was supposed to leave us with a surreal feeling. I know personally after seeing him lose, I was disappointed. But then I saw the check and went, "Holy shit, did he actually win?" I wouldn't put it past Derren to want to leave us with a plethora of questions.

Of course, it could just be that they were so confident that Derren was going to win that they were standing by with a check. That's probably more likely but also kinda depressing.

  • @ElmoPansy But then again, the bit in the casino was prerecorded as that looks like Derren standing with the check. So it'd be strange for him to stand with a check when he knew he'd lost. It's a bit hard to tell whether that's Derren at the end with the check, but if it is then it supports my first guess.

  • Even though he was one off, that's still pretty amazing, and still pretty ridiculous odds for the the roulette wheel.

  • I don't understand why he would end it like this... : \

  • My theory:

The video he showed was one of many. He filmed about ten or more videos, loosing 5 grand on each - on "live" he showed the one who's closest to winning. And at the end they just gave him 100 grand (Derren didn't even have to win) - so overall, they lost about 200 grands for this show... you can't cheat the roulette :D

  • Lol, he messed up.

He even had someone ready with a big prize check.

    Derren Browns awesome anyways.

    He's usually right.

At least it wasn't during his live Russian Roulette episode, that would have been really bad!

  • lol when i first watched this i freaken almost died laughing but that guy still amazing dont worry ben we will get ur money

  • What's interesting is that here in Nova Scotia, Canada, you actually have to make your bets on the roulette game BEFORE they start the ball spinning, specifically to make those computers or any other such physical systems impossible to use. There is one potential way to bypass this, in the form of watching the roulette wheel for hours, determining the number that shows up the most often, and bet on that. However, that will only give you slightly better odds and a slim payout.

  • derren ist not the only one who can telll where the ball lands there are more professional roullet players. and you can bet till the guy who throws the ball say" nothing goes anymore" on french i think

  • You could actually see the guy waiting for his cue before he said ´Youll get your money back´

    Sooo staged -_-

  • I don't think he made the mistake on purpose. I think he genuinly tried and got unlucky. "Dont worry, we'll give you your money back" = "don't worry, I'll just steal 5000 from an other person, but he wont remember it, so it's ok"

  • He made the mistake on purpose. Its a psychological effect. Making a mistake when you are almost perfect will make more people like you. You can read that in many persuasion books.

  • I think the entire Derren inside casino scene is pre-recorded, he just created the illusion of being live. That's what Derren is pro at doing anyway: misdirection

  • i think he did it on purpose to show how stupid it is to try and cheat at gambling and how how ridiculous it is to gamble at all

  • why can i see a guy with 180000£ on left at 5:45 .....

  • @nelsoncheat Probably he was going to give him the "big check" for 180K and make a big deal out of it. If he genuinely screwed up, who knows what he did with it...

  • 5:44 "Ben, don't worry. We're going get your 5 grand back ......... just lend us another 2 grand, we have a fool-proof system"

  • damn! that was seriously close!!!!!!!

  • Guys, sometimes things are just what they seem. You just can't understand how gifted derren brown is.

    btw casino's can be quiet,

he didn't lose on purpose, simply because there's no reason to it.

also he used to spend about half of his live in casino's when he was younger. he even used to slip in when he was still underage just because he was obsessed with gambling (and especially cheating)

  • kind of bad way to end the events

  • @hayshed I must admit this did look a bit staged

  • Derren Brown is talented but this is so fake and staged that it becomes insulting to my intelligence!

  • Really, a casino that quiet?

  • @joemama826

There didn't seemed to be a lot of people there, so why would it be loud? Its probably a little, not so popular casino. Don't know whats so strange about that

  • he was close, that's better than nothing lol

  • Fail.

  • this is so obviously fake it's not even funny

  • isnt derren standing besides the truck holding up that huge check for a shitload of money????

    please reply

  • awesome ending! i don't care!!

  • epic FAIL.

  • Fail X-D

at least he is assuring him, he will give him his money back:-)

i dont believe brown can read physical orders to predict anything, it sounds too much like science-fiction, i guess its much more simple in browns case.... but still, pretty impressing...

  • What an awkward ending...

  • Thats 1.750.000 danish crowns! I would be millionaire if I won that bet! I actually feel sorry about him. Yeah, I know I suck at english :)

  • Come on !!!

  • It amazes me that so many people who believe in Derren's abilities are those who like to call themselves "skeptics." This shows that they are just as succeptable to believe as anyone else- the only difference is that they substitute the words "magic" and "supernatural" with words like "psychology" and "illusion" which fill their innate need to feel smarter than anyone who thinks differently than they do.

  • u do realize that magic, supernatural, psycology and illusion r 4 completely different words, they cannot substitute each other, ofcourse theres no such thing as real magic, and "super natural occurrences" is just an explanation that people give to things that happen that they dont understand or seem amazing, without studying it they automatically draw conclusions without facts

  • You do realize that Derren Brown only barely ever uses either illusion or psychology. He isn't much different from Chris Angel or David Blaine, who make incredible "illusions" through nothing more than film edits, camera angles, plants and lying to the audience (like any showmen).

  • yea ofcourse, his main purpose is to entertain and put money in his pockets than to teach

  • @ManiacCraniac you do realize that this is just a tv show?

  • Yes. I was, however, beginning to feel like I was the only one who did; my comments were directed not toward the show, but towards "skeptics" who pride themselves on critical thinking and fall for this performance hook, line, sinker while laughing at others and yet still reading every word of this overlong sentence :p

  • man that sucked

  • taking down the casino by losing 5k on a single bet? you brits sure like to exaggerate

  • Comment removed

  • thx for ruining the show by commenting on the end result T_T

  • a) the wheels are slightly irregular and have a degree of wobble to them to encourage odd bounces, (Darren says he hopes the ball won't bounce too much)

    b) wheels are changed out on a regular basis, and each wheel has numbers in a different order.

    c) bets are closed BEFORE the ball is dropped, so even if he got the number right, the pit boss/casino security could stop him from collecting for placing a bet too late.

  • thats not entirely true. Different casinos have different regulations. Like no more betting after the ball spins around three times. ect

  • ooh.. fail.

  • My theory is that being the 4th 'Event' so technically the season finale he wanted to end on something different othen than the usual ending where he somehow gets everything right. So i think he used all the tricks he showed us (or a computer) and he knew it would land on red30 so he chose black8 so that the final shot could be this innocent guy losing 5K coz Derren screwed up a trick. Pretty cool ending to a series? and that was 100% what Derren had planned from the start. He's a genius!!!!

  • Good point - I reckon you're right

  • @BigThingsDoneSmall i'll take that thought one step further. since foot tapping is inherently less accurate at keeping time than a digital timepiece, there is a higher level of uncertainty performing the trick. since roulette pays out 35:1, derren only has to win 1 out of 34 times to make the game profitable. but your're right, win or lose, derren's performance and skills are genius.

  • @BigThingsDoneSmall yes and no, though there was a cheque at 5:45 ,and he would have been sued

  • Derren Brown was using a computer! Computer users lift their foot up every time to ball/number passes a certain point. Don't believe me? Then go the The Real Hustle Casino Gambling Devices. They explain them using the computer the exact same way at a roulette table. Coincidence????

  • I bet he did not use a computer on this occasion read the book "Beat The Dealer" by Edward O Thorpe ISBN 0-394-70310-3 which is the true account of how the original stunt was pulled off in the 60's by the university students who made a lot of money out of the casino BEFORE it was illegal. Card counting can be done with practice in your head too - you do need practice though.

  • @computersolutions164 You're talking about black jack only though, correct?

  • Yes Blackjack but card counting or variations on it are quite easy if you have the nerve to do it and not get noticed in a casino it is difficult to count in your head without it being noticable by the security staff. They are trained to look for people who do it. but one of the basic rules of card counting is to deal on any card BELOW 8 and STAND on any card above 8 but there are lots of variations

  • @computersolutions164 I only ask because you mentioned it as though it applied to Brown's roulette challenge.

  • So, if you are a skilled player (without a device), they throw you out?

Imagine if they did that at chess tournaments...

Armed Guards: YOU, COME WITH US!!!

Gary Kasparov: What did I do?!

  • Well, a chess tournament takes an entrance fee, see, just like a poker tournament. That's why they don't care how skilled you are at poker: you are beating other players, but you can NEVER beat the house, even if you won every hand.

...for other games, though, many (but not all) casinos reserve the right to ban you or not permit you to play for any reason they choose. If you want to have some good fun and maybe get lucky, they'll treat you good. If you want to try to beat the system tho...

  • @ManiacCraniac there are two Rs in Mr Kasparov's first name.

  • I can't believe I watched all that just so it could end that way. It should be called "AN ATTEMPT to take down a casino" Darren Brown is still the man, but what a shite ending to a show. I'm dissapointed.

  • no fucking joke i cant believe i watched 40 min of this bullshit

  • He's the Andy Kaufman of magic! Hilarious trickery

...And BTW, the UK is in Europe

  • Not if you ask the majority of people NO NO NO the UK is definitely NOT in Europe, unfortunately ity happens to be part of the fraudulent and extremely corrupt EU - who see fit to make our law without even asking us. The sooner we're out of it the better !

  • It's a pleasure - you're welcome

  • was that derren holding a big check at the end? lol. thanks for uploading!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • he should have given him the money as a sign of good faith and the fact that he supported this trick.... and also to show that there were no hard feelings.

  • Difference between Derren Brown and people like Char and other psychic is that Derren actually shows when their incorrect. psychics in tv shows just delete all their mistakes.

  • did anyone realize when ben is entering the van derren says "and there he goes" meaning hes probably watching... and everything tidies up perfectly at the end with no time left over if he would have done it correctly... i think he probably taped himself betting many times and just played back the one where he got closest to it.. i think its exactly the drama he wanted to create

  • "Don't worry, we'll get your five grand back, kay?"

    HAHAHAH

  • At least he broadcasts his mistakes. One off is way better than most people can do.

If he had 10 stacks of 5,000 dollars and bet every one of those, he would probably end up winning a lot more than losing. Even if he lost 9 out of 10 times, the payout would be 175,000 and the loss would only be 45,000. Success if you ask me.

  • did you all think its him at the and in the shadow holding the money????

  • He said this is how I play myrulet

So maybe he did use roulette computer from them and spy earpiece.

It is the easiest wheel for prediction, on such wheels roulette computer can predict 1:6.

He got it right but ball sometimes jumps differently.

  • LMFAO fuckin halarious at the end, ahh good old derren brown, hes still the best.

  • LOL I died laughing at the end!

  • I think it's awesome that he got SO close - Just one out.... Maybe that was the plan - To show that he could do it, but not let the casino lose a lot of money. He also got to show off his mind control skills :o)

  • I don't care Derren Brown is still Friggin Amazing!!!!

  • Now i know who bought latest computer from

    myrulet site

  • Some time back a gang of Romanians managed to beat a Spanish casino using electronic predictors with speed-reading lasers, disguised as cell phones. They were detained but the judge let them go because "they were not actually cheating".

Winning by doing what Derren does is possible if you bet by block of likely landing areas, but it is virtually impossible to predict one single number. If what he has shown us is real, what he has achieved -just one number off- is simply astonishing.

  • what a great finale!

    totally credible

  • I think the show was spectacular.

Think about it, we are all so used to seeing magicians get every stunt right, it almost gets boring.

Just to through in some variables. The camera that was conceiled, I own a small wireless cam too, and it cuts out all the time if not in distance of the receiver. the squash court was real, I play raquet ball and you have to serve over a line, you can easily tell where a ball will land withing a foot radius, with practice.

  • Yes but he told her the number the ball would land on:

    AS IT LEFT HER HAND

    and

WELL BEFORE THE BALL HAD HIT ANYWHERE IN THE SQUASH COURT

That's pretty clever and used to play squash. Remember that there is very little bounce with a "Yellow Spot" squash ball, as they are the slowest. I'd like to see him do it with a "Blue Spot" squash ball - Inorder of speed squash balls are BLUE, WHITE, RED, YELLOW - where BLUE is the most bouncy and used for beginners.

  • That makes sence too. are you familiar with raquettball, I'm wondering if squash is on a same sized court

  • Yes! And the continuous, uncut shot makes it all the more credible!

Sorry, but I think it's ridiculous to consider cutting and editing the same as MAGIC!

  • He did a trick like this before. He said he could throw ten times on a row the same side of a coin and he did, but it took him about a day filming. Maybe this time he used multiple volunteers and we only get to see the one he got right?!

  • @konijntje234 yep, after "system" i got the same feeling about many of browns preformances:-D its not necessery to use more than one volunteer, but he could play roulette more than one time and they showed us the best resultat :-D the same with the woman who threw the ball and the speed of the cars...

  • "Think about it, we are all so used to seeing magicians get every stunt right, it almost gets boring"

Yeah, Derren quoted Teller (of Penn & Teller) saying something to that effect in one of his books.

  • At 5:46, Why would Derren Brown be standing with $180,000 check if he knew that he didn't win?

  • Well my guess, bearing in mind it is a "Presentation Cheque" and not a normal one is that if he had have won they would have wanted to make something of it. they probably drew the cheque in advance and we cannot actually see if it is Derren holding it or not

  • lol derren brown's one mysterious character. i think we believe it's live after the first event, which also was a fluke itself. fucking camera trick, who's he kidding zz

  • As far as I know Derren does not use camera tricks. He never has before.........allegedly

  • Thanks form Poland for all The Events that you've uploaded :-)

  • You're welcome

  • Pause at 5:46 look at the left side of the screen, it's mr Brown himself.

Derren is the ultimate trickster!! Hahaha brilliant

  • Difficult to see if it is actually looks like a bloke wearing a cap. Could have easily been a crew member or security guard, the posturing looks a bit like Derren though.

Having said that if you ever seen him live, he does have a habit of conducting the first part of the show from theatre's toilets, before he actually appears on stage.

This is somewhat worrying, but the show is still worth every penny - go go go and see

    him !!!

  • Haha! That was epic!

  • well, i think it was planned....if he wanted to win, he could have prerecorded several attempts of him trying to win the money...

  • nice fake casino.

remember it's all about Misdirection and Showmanship!

  • Why bother going to Europe to fit out a hotel lobby as a fake casino, he could have done that in Bristol, Weston-Supermare or even Blackpool. Why bother with all the concealed cameras, if there was not SOME element of truth to that part of it.

  • i love derren brown... but really this Event really didn't do it for me.

if he could have showed a small part of him entering the casino right at the start, or at least a wide angle shot of the casino (without the name of course) right at the start of the attempt, it would really increase the realism of the Event.

btw, thanks again for posting these vids! =)

  • He wouldn't want to show the casino at all due to the unwanted attention he would get from it. It would've helped to us, the viewers, but he wanted no interruption or unwanted interruptions from other fans.

  • How do you know he's in Europe?

  • We don't and was it him standing there with a cheque at the end.

I thought the volunteer seemed a little TOO willing to hand over his money to Derren.

I mean if a strange man in a trench coat and a goatee came up to you in the dark would you give him your credit card ?

A little bit toooooooo staged I think

  • but what if that man was Derren Brown?

  • I see Derren holding a cheque at the end!

  • wasn't derren, I think the check was paid if Derren actually got the number right, however it wasn't

  • The Events series are Absolutely Brilliant!...need no more words for it... so Love this...

  • omg i didnt think he wud lose man with all that built up anticipation. urgh wen he lost i thought it was like a set up like he was gona do stn more spectacular urgh it was so exciting with an unsatisfying ending :(:(

but remember in his last series this happened as well, i think he was also one off.

  • i mean the car speed is definatly doable.. if he has certain setmarks around.. like a tree to a tree.. and times in his head the time it would take for that far 2 go from that 1 tree to next tree.. he can use v= change in distance over change in time... or in this case just v= d/t... so v= lets say 200 meters/4 seconds or something... which will theoretically give him 50... so that part was doable... the rest.. eh...

  • i believe there is speed limit on the road. He could have just guest some where around the speed limit, and most likely get it right.

Of course, it would also depend on the trafic that day. More car would mean slower speed.

I believe the car speed is not that complicated.

  • The maths behind car speed is not difficult with a couple of fixed points, Here in the UK we have "chevrons" on some motorways, where you are supposed to keep two "chevrons" from the car in front, thus regulating your speed against a fixed point - Easy to guess but to get it spot on is a lot harder.

  • I don't think he guessed the speeds. I think he says a couple of numbers until he gets a reaction from the police officer (who knows the speed on the gun obviously). Also the speed limit is obviously 50 on that part of the road and he knows people will slow to that speed when they look up and see the police officer on the bridge! It was a nice trick but pretty simple

  • is that derren holding the cheque at the end? rly looks like it

well done derren :) fooled us all again

  • he should have brought more cash with him incase something like that happened.

  • thanks, as always, for posting. so great to be able to see Derren here in the USA

  • You're welcome

  • kind of disapointed since it was the final show

  • Guys stop with the naive answers. I know Derren is a genius but figuring the car speed and the ball landing on 37 were bullshit. The casino was even more obvious. That was the emptiest casino I've ever seen. I think Derren set up a warehouse to look like a casino (he said "somewhere in Europe" about 30 times mislead). The roulette was rigged and of course Derren didn't win because he would have to give 175000 pounds to that guy. He still was one off so it would seem like his "skill" worked.

  • So... you're telling me, he rigged a casino in order to loose? WTF? He could just "loose" at any old casino - why on earth would he build one (a feat that, in itself would cost several times the 5,000 pounds he bets)? If I were Derren and I set up a casino, I would have made myself WIN. This is one of the rare occasions Derren has ever failed in a trick and, though I am disappointed, I must say that this, if anything, proves his fallibility and therefore, his humanity and also, his honesty.

  • Excellent comment !

  • i think that is exactly what he wanted. so maybe he lost on purpose to get his honesty back.

  • well because then he would have to give this guy 175000.

  • How many casino's do you go in on a regular basis and why do you think he did it in Europe and not here. He's banned from every casino in Britain -because he is good and can "cheat" well and win, but he is not so well known in Europe and can get away with it

  • he is banned from every casino? What makes you say that?

  • No remember your physics from school where F=MA (Force = Mass X Acceleration) well that will give you the speed of the ball past a fixed point, so that bit is correct - No bullshit there at all.

This is about potential energy being converted into kinetic energy MGH & MV2/2 This can be worked out but doing it in your head and in real time would be difficult without a notepad

  • Wow! Painful, but still pretty brilliant.

  • the point is that he is one point out... so he did not get it wrong, this was just the point of the show... otherwise all the casino industry would revolt... great sense of humour!

  • lol the face of the guy when he notices he joust lost 5k

  • lol my comment isnt a spoiler. jk jk thnx for the up.

  • He was close tho.

  • he was just one off. damn... great show though :)

  • Nice to see that even the "Mind Master" himself SOMETIMES gets it wrong too

  • wow not expecting that...

  • What a shame. =)
