Each Tenor man was the master of his fate/captain of his soul. We are truly fortunate to hear them together. All that's missing is Lester and Dexter. And Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt. Aw, the hell with it...It's all good...
webster was one of the greatest tenor players in the hawkins line, together with people like chu berry, don byas, and not many more. some people even prefer webster to hawkins, but in my opinion no-one could match the master.
but then there was lester young, and he was unique...
I used to think all saxophones should be melted down and turned into brass instruments. Or doorknobs. These gentlemen (and this entire album) show what a ridiculous sentiment that was - although I still hate screeching rock sax...
@JakeMDavey Thank you for mentioning the Desert Island Disk programme. The following day I went to You Tube and found the track and your comments - It still sends tingle's up my spine. 57 Years ago when I was in the RAF in Germany I went to see Coleman Hawkins playing Is Dusseldorff - Just before the concert I went to a bar around the corner from the theatre there was the man himself on his own and I bought him a brandy. Wow
glad to hear lord adebowale choose this track as his favourite for his desert island disc.one cannot tire of such sublime craftmanship.as someone once told me in the now gone tower records in piccadilly,"coleman hawkins-listen to him man,and you wet yourself man".he was right in a fashion!!!
@wayote Webster started first. He once said that Hawk make him started the defficult parts while making this album. But ha was not angry he said: "We just laught about the matter and start to play".
Wonderful. I am fortunate to have this on a vinyl that I inherited from my late father himself a Sax player. The record is titled 'Blue Saxophones' a true classic. Many thanks for the upload.
some time ago, a cruel writer called this music for the lifts. and indeed i smiled because i heard Hawn and Ben in a lift in Manhattan. but that was before I had my own proper encounter with these tenor giants. and so nowadays when i listen to this gentle, sophisticated number, i simply associate it with great food, a glass or red, joyful conversation and a sensual time.... it has now entered my mind!
@staguk334433 Which one? or do you mean both in a collective sense? I think Hawk's the Master here--at least in terms of tone. Just the right blend of toughness and sweetness. Webster's sound was always a tad too sweet for my liking.

It's not often that you hear a cutting contest on a ballad.
i love Ben, but I'd have to go with Hawk on this one.
listening to him turn the phrases from 3:33 to 4:02 just knocks knocks me out.

@Cyril19591975 WTF? Hawk solos first on several of the tracks on this album. Get familiar with the record before sounding off.
