Not a fan of this arrangement. Or the Suck On This version for that matter... Herb might have been the definative drummer but the Rhinoplasty recording is the definative version of this song
@zaiger16 i think every version is awesome, this one in particular, and you are sadly mistaken sir, the definitive version is the jazz version for sure
WOW! This is an early one....I discovered Primus back in 1990 and have been a sucky fan every since. They do SUCK!! Primus sucks, Primus sucks! Oh the chants from the pit ay lalapalooza. Les Claypool for president 2012.
Awesome song, I only started listening to Primus this year. Although this is cool, the later covers are better, in my opinion. The song's a bit slow, here.
i did a long time ago....pal....thats why i made the comment....larry was in the band in 1998...for several years already....buddy....so was Tim.....friend....i started listening to this band in 95...it was Les, Ler, Herb....
Well, I was sitting in my computer chair downloading something called "Primus Bass Solo" and it was the solo from Tommy the Cat on Suck On This. But it was just the solo so other than the fact that it was really good I knew I could never play it so I thought nothing of it. Later at my friend's birthday party, someone had on a Primus CD. My friend Taylor knew who they were and was trying to remember the name. Eventually he remembered and then I heard Primus. A real song. Maybe John the Fisherman.
i learned of primus when my friend gary played the live tommy the cat from rhinoplasty and it blew my fucking mind! i got there albums a bit later and there my fave band....
this is veeery 80s sounding, unlike usual primus. i know les was a fan of XTC and peter gabriel; guess this is what came out before any other claypool music.
when you mix that with influence from stanley clarke and jazz fusion, then add some influence from metal and cliff burton, well that you have quite a unique load of influence all streaming towards an abundant outlash of insane funk metal folk. there are too many ways of describing primus, or just simply les claypool alone. they are by far one of the most unique bands in my eyes, especially if your just talking current or more recent bands.
I actually got Suck On This about a few weeks after I posted this, and when I heard the solo I thought it was pretty funny. Not that it sucked, but years ago I looked up "bass solos" on Limewire and that solo cameup. "Primus bass solo" it was called. That was how I learned of Primus. Pretty awesome solo too.
I've posted here before, so I'm reliable when I say that dude, this is totally awesome. I swear to God. go to youtube.justgotowned.*com (without the star) and you'll FUCKING LMFAO! ^_^ PRIMUS SUCKS!
I know! I was suprised to hear this because his version today is much different than this one. Jay and Todd really affected Tommy the Cat by giving it more funk and RHCP qualities. I think this is when Les had more fun, too, and a more treble voice.
Is it okay that I might like this version a bit more than the original?

On the "Suck On This" live album version of "Tommy the Cat", not talking about this version here.
It's pretty cool if you never heard it before.
