  • San Jose hosted an NRHS convention with 2472, 3985 and 4449 in 1992. The Two big steamers Steamed to San Jose and back.

  • NO! it was railfair 1991 in sacramento because 3985 traveled solo for half the trip

  • NO! Now I know for sure this was Railfair 99, but 3985 ran solo here to and 4449 has a black front numberplate, and if you look at the videos from 1991 it's red, so for sure it's Railfair 99, end of debate

  • 3985 ran solo in '99 because 844 popped a flue.

  • It would have been better to hear big screaming locos, instead of that obnoxious, stupid, drug abusing, git, steven tylor.

  • I can tell it's railfair '99 because the 4449 has a black number plate when from '90-'98 it had a red one

  • She is back to red on the numberplate...

  • Which railfar was this?

  • Railfair '99 there should be one this summer

  • There may be a railfair this year, but I'm pretty sure the big steam wont make an appearance. You think the State of Ca. could pull some strings to get the 4449,8444, and 3985 back for another show.

  • Come to think of it, this may be for the Stockton Railfair in 91, maybe. Its been such a long time agao.

  • all my favorite spots in one video, nice stuff, the feather river run reminds me of chasing the centenial, and the 4449 reminds me of the UP1996 chase

  • VERY VERY COOL VIDEO!!! I love the Daylight! My top 3 favorite trains are in this, Amazing! Two thumbs WAY up.

  • the helper is to provide dynamic brakes cool video

  • Great video, thank you. Two questions:

    1. Why do they add a diesel helper if the Challenger is powerful enough? (It was designed and built for heavy fast freight service).

    2. Is the day light an oil burner?

    Than you.

  • 1) The diesel is probably there for insurance reasons, so if 3985 breaks down it does clog the mainline while they find another locomotive to keep the train moving, that is in addition to providing dynamic brakes.

    2) The Daylight is indeed an oil burner. Southern Pacific was an oil-buring railroad from very early on, so all of the steamers built in the 1900s were oil burners.
