My cat had the same a few days ago. The vets told me it was caused by a blood clot that travelled to his spinal cord causing paralysis in his hind legs. They told me there as no cure and the best thing for him was to put him down. . The worst part of it was because it came from nowhere, the same day he was running around and chasing a ball just like a kitten again (he was 10) and a few hours later he was unable to move his legs.. I think what they called it was Feline Thromboembolic Disease .
Hi Lucy, I believe Eve might have had some sort of neurological storage disease (lysosomal, glycogen), since symptoms only got worse and began early in her life (5 months, I think?). Maybe she didn't have seizures or behavioral abnormalities because she was put down before showing those symptoms. I also disagree with CH diagnose; symptoms are alike, but not the same. Eve had ataxia, indeed, but that's about it. And most important: CH symptoms do not worsen with time!! Hope this helps!

This appears to be a clear case of Cerebellar Hypoplasia. This is a common disease affecting the motor skills and/or central nervous system of the feline species. Cats can live long lives with this condition & if that cat is not in any pain, I would not consider euthansia unless of course you have a problem dealing with your cat in this condition.
My cat had the exact same issue... feline hyperesthesia. He was 11 years old, he walking one day and was like this the next morning. I can't stop crying. Funny how much joy animals can bring to our life.
I'm so sorry to hear about your cat's sudden affliction. You are right about how much joy they bring us. When they suffer, we grieve. Blessings to you. Lucy
A vet that recommends euthanasia without doing more homework is not worth what you have to pay for such a callous, disinterested statement. There is hope and love to carry her through a happy and healthy life.
ok wat this is is yur cat has dayner walker syndrom its to do with fluid in the brain and sadly there is no curebut apart from the obvious the cat is fine
This is called Cerebral Hypoplasia. It is a neurological disorder. My cat has it. She is 4 years old. Our vet told us that she would be alright just that she might have a shortened life expectancy. It's kinda sad but Beepers, my cat, still loves life. It's really only her hind legs that are affected and she can still eat, use litter box and play. I would ask a vet but not many have really seen this or diagns properly so if your vet hasnt heard of it i wouldnt be surprised.
Kitty looks like she's getting around okay and seems happy and very sweet. Why automatic euthanasia? And why on earth wouldn't they spay her?? A disability doesn't have to be a death sentence and it looks like you have plenty of space and love for her.
Poor Thing. This is definitely Cerebellar Hypoplasia. My CH Kitty is much more severe and living a good life with some extra care from me. These cats can live full lifespans. There is absolutely no need to euthanize this beautiful pet. There is no cure, and they usually don't get any better or any worse. Just keep him safe as much as possible. Keep away from stairs, slippery floors, etc. Best of luck to you and if you have any other questions I can answer, I will be happy to.
Did your CH kitty get spayed? No vet would spay Eve, and her three week repeated cycles caused trembles and so much agitation that the quality of her life became worse and worse. The animal hospital tried to talk us into putting her down months before.
Hi There, My cat is very under-developed. She is full grown at 3.5lbs. She never got her cycle. So no she has not been spayed. However, my vet would have spayed her if she was "normal".
I hope you didn't have her put her down?
If you didn't, I would recommend you see a neurologist or another vet that would spay the cat with no problem. If you live anywhere near Long Island I can refer you to someone. Please let me know. Best Regards!
This cat is beautiful and he can live with his disability : he is NOT paralyzed, he can move around ! Shame to the vet who recommends to put him down ! Let him live & Love him : he deserves it ! Please update us.
Did anyone suggest this might be Cerebellar Hypoplasia? They are completely normal kitties, but have had damage to their cerebellum (pre-birth), so they have varying degrees of lack of balance/coordination.
The cat might be having back problems. We used to have a baby squirrel with serious back trauma, it could not walk on back legs at all, but then recovered on its own.
Get away from COMMERCIAL PET FOODS! I So many of them have euthanized animals in them which means your pets are being fed pentobarbital. Google it! I recommend natures pet for human grade food. google them. Once the damage is so severe it's difficult to reverse. Too many vets know exactly what the deal is, but it's too political for them to get involved, so they just act like they don't know what's wrong and keep making money off of treating your animals. *SAD* I've been there done it!
Eve got much worse from when that movie was made. The vet and staff tried to get us to euthanized her months before she was. We didn't mind holding her up in the litter box and cleaning her but we couldn't help her with her back- to -back "heat" cycles that made her tremble (like seizures). We asked several doctors if they could spay her and no one would take the risk. We were heartbroken and I still cry over her death, nearly two years later.
HEY!!! do you know what is it? my cat is 5 months and has the same symp since last week. I'm so worried!! i havent get her to the vet yet, because i dont have the funds...
The neurologist said she showed symptoms of injury to two spinal areas: neck and hip areas; but she showed nerve degeneration with muscle involvement on both sides too. It could also even be Toxoplasmosis, FIP or FIV! She was put on antibiotics and steroids but she showed no improvement.
Since your cat is 5 months, it is time for her to be spayed. You can talk to your vet at that time. I urge to get her spayed even if your funds are low, because her life will be worse without it.
Since the vets said she wasn't in any pain, why was she put to sleep? Cuz she didn't look cute enough? I'm sorry but thats very cruel. We have no right murdering them just cuz they're disabled and wont make a cuddly toy for us to play. Its their life. Unless they're in extreme pain, I'm NOT in favor of putting pets down.
Euthanasia is probably the best thing to do for the cat, but you could of had a kitty wheel chair. But at least the kitten/cat isn't suffering anymore from it.
I KNOW this is NOT "cerebral hypoplasia". That's whole body with problems judging distance and balance. This is hind limbs, and they have hypertonicity of the muscle = upper motor neuron problem (in the spinal cord). It was probly progressive= tumor or inflammation in the area of the lower back (within spinal cord). Likely nothing could have been done...if radiation was an option, u can't explain to the cat why you have to put them through it... Sorry for your loss. Looks like a sweet Kitty!
In an earlier post the owner of the cat said that the vets say the cat's not in pain. Yet they recommended putter the cat down, probably cuz its unsightly to watch her walk. And the owner, apparently obliged.
I'd have kept the kitty and gave her extra love like Dhashizbhi says. I cant believe the poor thing was put to death. Who's more cruel, God or us? But then we created God ourseleves so we can blame him for our own cruelty and shortcomings.
Sorry you had to put her down. I have two females who aren't spade in the house all my male cats are done and they never get to leave the house. It's a rare condition but if it ever happens again and the kitty is happy then you may consider just letting it go and not worrying about getting the kitty fixed. They make those wheel chair type devives for the back are front legs so the kitty may have had somewhat of a normal life. I have one cats thats so nuts she never leaves the bathroom.
cerebellar hypoplasia I think...Normally cats aren't in pain with this disease, they just are clumsy a little bit for the rest of their lives. She seemed happy...She doesn't care I don't know why she was put down, unless it wasn't CH...
I'm sorry for your loss, she seemed like a good kitty.
Yep. Looks like cerebellar hypoplasia to me. Did you put him/her down? He/she doesn't seem to be in pain, he/she could lead a happy life being a silly uncoordinated kitty! :P
We never got beyond an initial diagnosis. Her problem definitely involved spine AND muscles. The neurologist's estimate to continue tests was $5,000. Our rescue spent $1,000 but couldn't keep testing since all treatments for curable conditions showed no result and the neurologist and two veterinarians knew there was no cure.
If she's not in pain and can live a pretty normal life with you,eat sleep and go to the toilet i see no reason to get her shot caus she will live her life with the other cats like any other kitten and i'm pretty sure she don't even care since she's probably born like that.Just a cute kitty with a small difference.
cerebellar hypoplasia? that disease causes mild to severe incoordination, and it looks like your kitty is pretty uncoordinated! i wouldn't put him down unless his quality of life suffers.
bless him. his back legs look really flimsy coz their like rubber, even when he eats, he lays down, which isnt too good for digestion, id be careful! good luck X.
aww.. whatever you do do not put this sweet cat to slepp . i have a cat just like this one and shes the happiest cat ever. always comes for cuddles and sleeps with me. even tho hes disabled he looks happy and with all your love hel b fine :) xx
if it was recently declawed then that could be it just getting used to tthe floors without claws that waht sorta happend 2 my cat but not nearly as severe good luck
at least ur trying to get help. one thing u could do is try to pick the cat up but be careful. so it doesnt walk so much and get worse. it never happend to my cat but its a thought. good luck
There are a multitude of diseases that can cause ataxia (difficulty moving). Muscular dystrophy, limb girdle, parkinson's, huntingto's, poliomyelitis, freidrich's, wilson's and lambert eaton to name a few. Almost all of them are incurable.
I thought man's purpose on earth was to make it a better place than it was before. Aren't we stewards of the earth & therefore one of our responsibilities is to help those (even animals) who are weaker than us? And shouldn't we be even more responsible toward animals (than humans) since they can't control what WE do to THEM--raping the planet & decimating species. To all you insensitive RETARDS: maybe someone should take a gun to YOU!!!
great cat.Very loving and normal in all other regards. Found her living in the bushes outside in zero degree weather so we brought her in.She would wabble and fall down often but get right back up.Such a never give up spirit. She had cancer eventually and I'm so heartbroken.
thats not vestibular disease, my cat has that and its nothing like that at all. This is exactly what the vet said, "incurably neurological".. dont put it to sleep tho, if its not in pain, then its adjusted, just love it <3
Please, listen to Wordenlisa before you do anything rash, cerebellar hypoplasia is not painful for a cat, and does not take away from their ability to enjoy life. It impairs their motor skills, not their minds.
if he's pissin blood its prolly kindney disease cuz my cat died a few days ago from that and for the last few days he couldnt even walk and was always sleeping
i feel sorry for the kitten but cant help but feel relieved that the cat looks like it is in no pain or distress. im sure that the cat has adapted to it and would be fine, but im no vet. its just something he/she will have to live by. sorry about the cat.
It almost reminds me of a cat we had, we called him "Toot". His problem started probably before he was able to walk, as we didn't notice until his litter mates gained their footing when he did not. How ever, he adapted and lived for 3 years (got lost in a blizzard), which was pretty good since he was a barn cat for the most part. Oddly, he was a top notch mouser.
it's probably some mental physical problem. Either that or the limp that it started out with turned out to be a broken leg or something that gew in funky because the sides that were healing up grew in differently than normal. If the cat always was like this i'd recommend sugg. number 1, or two. If it started with the limp, I'd recommend number 3. Or, last guess, the legs or pads on its feet are holding up right. but the last ones unlikely...
I am so sorry to hear about your kitten who looks like Eve when she walked. Hers started with a limp at about 4 months and her debilitation worsened week after week.
If your cat has diabetes, and this is diabetic neuropathy, then you might consider the soluble form of vitamin B-12 that is injectible (methylcobalamin), which helped our cat. It could be anecdotal (the insulin finally taking effect), but we were fairly convinced that this was a major positive factor. Look into this and see if it helps.
i think i have an idea! when the cat walks help it like try to make it stand then when it stands move its back feet to help it walk properly that'll prob work if not gt a cat bike so when it walks it rolls like those kind of cats and dog where their back feet dont work use those bikes
Poor kitty... sorry she is having problems.. They make a kitty wheelchair now so if she can't move well she can use that. Do a youtube search for cripple kitten & there is a cat that is paralyzed in back & he gets around fine like that.
For anyone else whose cat has this problem, notice if they walk on hocks, or paws. Eve walks on her hocks, which is a sign of diabetes. Cats with vestibular disease or strokes walk on paws and look giddy.
So sorry for your loss. My cat has a similar problem and I've been doing masses of googling to find a possible cause. In a few days she's going back to the vet and I'm asking for a diabetes test. There's a condition called diabetic neuropathy which causes hind leg weakness. Hope this helps someone.
I never found a way to help Eve, but we did talk to the doctors about diabetic neuropathy and they explained why her symptoms did not match that condition. One closed door after another. I hope your cat's condition can be helped!
The cat was already put to sleep. You also have to read page 2, its so sad. I think its not within a persons discretion to say that disease makes an unfulfilled life. My cat has also some kind of disease up from birth, she skips like a rabbit, but is often faster than other cats and she lives a normal life. I have to say that she never suffered from her disease, so I treat her like a normal healthy cat. But if you ever think your cat is in pain its inevitable to think about euthanizing.
Hi Mimi, No, this cat never had a Hartz collar on. She came from a feral colony and was rescued from the rain when 3 weeks old and I fostered the litter inside-never let them outside. I"ll always wonder what she had.
So sorry to hear about sweet Eve. She looks just like my cat who's pushing 13. I feel lucky to have two happy, healthy pets. Looks as if you did everything you could for her and the short time she was here, she was as happy as she could be.
Would you mind giving an update on Eve? Did you have yo euthanize her? Poor little sweetheart.Love your black kitties. I have a weakness for black cats.
i love cats and it was hard to watch the video. just to let you she is in a better place. i know it was hard for you. i hope her sister doesn't develop the same thing. good luck with your brother too. god bless you and ur family
Eve was put to sleep on 2/21. I brought her sister Esther, their cat basket, favorite blankets and toys. I know people say it's the best thing to do but I am not convinced. One vet said she was not in pain, but she kept getting more disabled, cycling in heat which caused her the most agitation and could not be spayed (too risky). I still cry. Pyrefly86, thankyou for your comment. P.S. The video's musical background was written and played by my brother who is dying of a brain tumor.
a friend of mine´s cat had a similiar problem.. she didnt get better. I know its a horrible thing to say, but I think, that if Eve is in pain, she should be put to sleep. Often, that is a better solution. But I guess that if she is not suffering and can have a slightly normal life.. this is just sad and tears me up. I hope she is doing OK.
I'm just a vet student atm, but it looks like your cat has a problem with the muscles that adduct (bring in) it's hind-limbs. Such a problem is likely to be neurological in origin, possibly damage to her obturator nerves that are largely responsible for stimulating adductor muscles of the hind-limbs. Although it is curious that both sides are effected, was the right side worse? I hope your appoinment with the neurologist shed more light on the situation. Really cute wee cat you've got there!
The neurologist said from her exam she showed symptoms of injury to two spinal areas: neck and hip areas; but she showed nerve degeneration with muscle involvement on both sides too. It could also even be Toxoplasmosis, FIP or FIV! She was put on antibiotics and steroids but after 13 days she is getting worse. Eve's right leg is mostly paralyzed. We are making sure she enjoys life as much as possible. Dr. Ast, Dr. Studor and Dr. Galle (3 clinics) have been wonderful. Thanks for your comments!
I thought CH was a birth defect....cat is born with it. Not something that has a sudden onset. Can anyone clear this up?

Probably cerebellar hypoplasia, BUT NOT SURE BEFORE A VET DID'NT SEE HER!
Take she to a vet!
Ch is not curable, but she can live full lifespan with it. Some possible other causes: joint imflammation, some fracture/sprain... they are CURABLE.
You can't sure before a vet!

Yes, Eve had to be put to sleep months after this video was taken. No veterinarian we took her to would "risk" spaying her, and she became miserable.

Yep. Looks like cerebellar hypoplasia to me. Did you put him/her down? He/she doesn't seem to be in pain, he/she could lead a happy life being a silly uncoordinated kitty! :P
ObsTheGreat 3 years ago
i said that to the guy who said cats should be shot
Ninpink 3 years ago
aaaaw poor kittey it look like my cat when it was young :l
Ninpink 3 years ago
Did you ever figure out what the cat's problem is? That's really depressing.
lathamcd 3 years ago
We never got beyond an initial diagnosis. Her problem definitely involved spine AND muscles. The neurologist's estimate to continue tests was $5,000. Our rescue spent $1,000 but couldn't keep testing since all treatments for curable conditions showed no result and the neurologist and two veterinarians knew there was no cure.
They all said she wasn't in pain.
savecats04 3 years ago
If she's not in pain and can live a pretty normal life with you,eat sleep and go to the toilet i see no reason to get her shot caus she will live her life with the other cats like any other kitten and i'm pretty sure she don't even care since she's probably born like that.Just a cute kitty with a small difference.

cerebellar hypoplasia? that disease causes mild to severe incoordination, and it looks like your kitty is pretty uncoordinated! i wouldn't put him down unless his quality of life suffers.

Hello, my name is Mark and i'm a 49 year old
male.My girlfriend Robin and I just had to
have our kitty Little T put to sleep today.
She had the cerebellar Hypoplasia and was a
great cat.Very loving and normal in all other regards. Found her living in the bushes outside in zero degree weather so we brought her in.She would wabble and fall down often but get right back up.Such a never give up spirit. She had cancer eventually and I'm so heartbroken.

Please, listen to Wordenlisa before you do anything rash, cerebellar hypoplasia is not painful for a cat, and does not take away from their ability to enjoy life. It impairs their motor skills, not their minds.

i feel sorry for the kitten but cant help but feel relieved that the cat looks like it is in no pain or distress. im sure that the cat has adapted to it and would be fine, but im no vet. its just something he/she will have to live by. sorry about the cat.
madzach21 4 years ago
It almost reminds me of a cat we had, we called him "Toot". His problem started probably before he was able to walk, as we didn't notice until his litter mates gained their footing when he did not. How ever, he adapted and lived for 3 years (got lost in a blizzard), which was pretty good since he was a barn cat for the most part. Oddly, he was a top notch mouser.
KateMcCridhe 4 years ago
it's probably some mental physical problem.

Look into this and see if it helps.
prupre 4 years ago
ohh the poor thing it almost made me cry.
bayley699 4 years ago
i think i have an idea! when the cat walks help it like try to make it stand then when it stands move its back feet to help it walk properly that'll prob work if not gt a cat bike so when it walks it rolls like those kind of cats and dog where their back feet dont work use those bikes
cutiekitty103 4 years ago
Good ideas. All tried. The cat neurologist said her spine and her muscles were degenerating, and in such a way physical therapy would not help.
savecats04 4 years ago
Poor kitty... sorry she is having problems.. They make a kitty wheelchair now so if she can't move well she can use that. Do a youtube search for cripple kitten & there is a cat that is paralyzed in back & he gets around fine like that.
bengalkitty 4 years ago
For anyone else whose cat has this problem, notice if they walk on hocks, or paws. Eve walks on her hocks, which is a sign of diabetes. Cats with vestibular disease or strokes walk on paws and look giddy.
muskndusk 4 years ago
Oh my god....
Thos started happening to my kitten just today...
DarkDragoon77777 4 years ago
So sorry for your loss. My cat has a similar problem and I've been doing masses of googling to find a possible cause. In a few days she's going back to the vet and I'm asking for a diabetes test. There's a condition called diabetic neuropathy which causes hind leg weakness. Hope this helps someone.
muskndusk 4 years ago
I never found a way to help Eve, but we did talk to the doctors about diabetic neuropathy and they explained why her symptoms did not match that condition. One closed door after another. I hope your cat's condition can be helped!
savecats04 4 years ago
The cat was already put to sleep. You also have to read page 2, its so sad. I think its not within a persons discretion to say that disease makes an unfulfilled life. My cat has also some kind of disease up from birth, she skips like a rabbit, but is often faster than other cats and she lives a normal life. I have to say that she never suffered from her disease, so I treat her like a normal healthy cat. But if you ever think your cat is in pain its inevitable to think about euthanizing.
amarenared 4 years ago
Type in "disabled animals of the rolling dog ranch" and watch that video.
it'll show you other cats with a similar problem
it will be a neurological disorder your cat has.
However as this video will show,
your cat won't be living a sad life
as it doesn't know any better
and it's perfectly healthy bar this disability,
so keep it alive

Hi Mimi, No, this cat never had a Hartz collar on. She came from a feral colony and was rescued from the rain when 3 weeks old and I fostered the litter inside-never let them outside. I"ll always wonder what she had.

P.S. The video's musical background was written and played by my brother who is dying of a brain tumor.
savecats04 5 years ago
a friend of mine´s cat had a similiar problem.. she didnt get better. I know its a horrible thing to say, but I think, that if Eve is in pain, she should be put to sleep. Often, that is a better solution. But I guess that if she is not suffering and can have a slightly normal life.. this is just sad and tears me up. I hope she is doing OK.
pyrefly86 5 years ago
I'm just a vet student atm, but it looks like your cat has a problem with the muscles that adduct (bring in) it's hind-limbs. Such a problem is likely to be neurological in origin, possibly damage to her obturator nerves that are largely responsible for stimulating adductor muscles of the hind-limbs. Although it is curious that both sides are effected, was the right side worse? I hope your appoinment with the neurologist shed more light on the situation. Really cute wee cat you've got there!
jerseyboi85 5 years ago
The neurologist said from her exam she showed symptoms of injury to two spinal areas: neck and hip areas; but she showed nerve degeneration with muscle involvement on both sides too. It could also even be Toxoplasmosis, FIP or FIV! She was put on antibiotics and steroids but after 13 days she is getting worse. Eve's right leg is mostly paralyzed. We are making sure she enjoys life as much as possible. Dr. Ast, Dr. Studor and Dr. Galle (3 clinics) have been wonderful. Thanks for your comments!
savecats04 5 years ago
yea i thought so too... when i was watching the part where the cat goes to eat the legs lookd kinda... funky
