Lermontov was actually was very fond of Fennimore Cupper and before writing a novel he entertained the idea to write something similar, adventurous, but set in Russian reality. What came out was something quite different – the first Russian psychological novel. It offers many levels of depth and therefore it’s a good read in any age. Also to a Russian reader this novel offers a whole different level of “dearness” that cannot be translated. God bless you.
