@mgbushido You wrote "someone invented the clarinet....." My comment was referring to Benny Goodman, and Artie Shaw. Two extremely popular clarinetists.
Great song, but I love the The Spencer Wyatt Big Band's version. It sounds more jazzy and a bit cheerful. Watch Jim Carey's The Majestic and you'll know what I meant.
Here I stand, watching the tide go out So all alone and blue Just dreaming dreams of you I watched your ship as it sailed out to sea Taking all my dreams And taking all of me The sighing of the waves The wailing of the wind The tears in my eyes burn Pleading, "My love, return" Why, oh, why must I go on like this? Shall I just be a lonely stranger on the shore? The sighing of the waves The wailing of the wind The tears in my eyes burn Leebm29
this is my first musical piece for him, but then he didn't afford go to my performance that night... he's forbidden. he is already getting married. I've never seen this guy. until now, he remains a stranger to me.
the 2 versions are different styles, this version its beautiful, with new arrangements; the other one have arrangements, very beutiful in his time. Its not necessary to compare one to the other because are different styles, different genres
I read some of the comments here and went back and listened to Acker Bilk's version. No way...there's no comparison. This tune sounds so much sweeter on Bilk's clarinet. The clarinet sound is "woodier" and "warmer". The sax sounds clearer, but is metallic and colder. Not Kenny G's fault. Just a limitation of the instrument, as applies to this tune, I guess. But, yes, Kenny G should have credited Acker Bilk.
good effort but its not sir Acker Bilk and i say this for the rest of the artists who have covered it as it was it does not have the same soul as when sir Acker Bilk is playing it there is no body who fits the bill better than Acker now find somthing else to play.........
I wholeheartedly agree that Kenny G really should have acknowledged and credited Mr. Acker Bilk. This tune was Bilk's through and through. I think the clarinet version has a much lower, sweeter, more authentic sound. Although I credit G's CD for introducing me to the tune.
I'm not a musician, but I do love music, and this rendition does sound rather nice.
And as for those who are arguing about the differences between the clarinet and soprano sax, Personally, I think you guys sound like band snobs. Don't take it as an insult, but rather as constructive criticism. Why not help those of us who are orchestral amateurs to appreciate the nuances instead of scathing an enjoyable rendition? Just my $0.02...
people who play the sax and clarinet from the side of the mouth look so dam silly, so jokey, so wank (even if they sound brilliant like this dude does)
Although Kenny does a supurb job, the original from '61 is the best. I was 12 yrs old at the time and the song put me in dream land as it still does today
It's great too see Acker Bilk's hit is recognised by Mr G. It's never going to be as good as Acker on the Clarinet - but I would say that - I'm in his band :)
I'm going to have to play this on the flute, just to see what it sounds like. What a beautiful rendition. Thanks for sharing. Flautist, Carol Louise

Agree...it was all about Acker Bilks. My Mothers favorite song.
Question:
Is it just me, or have you ever found the "lyrics" for this song?
As a young girl, I thought that I heard 'Stranger On the Shore' with lyrics?
Just asking.
hipichick7 2 years ago
Yes, there are lyrics. It is about a lady whose man (probably military) is shipping out and leaving her feeling as a stranger on the shore.

theres no way u can say ackers version is better. this version blows it away. i know he didnt make the song....but he plays it better

I think he's doing a tribute to Bilk by doing the song he's showing his respect, not competing. Both are beautiful.

His rendition is so mechanical and devoid of feeling that it sounds like muzak! Absolutely no comparison with Acker Bilk.

mgbushido 4 years ago 14
Bit of a joke really, it sounds great and all that, but he's playing a soprano sax, not a clarinet :P
They look similar, but sound very different :P
Its like playing a classical harpsichord piece on a piano and seeing if anyone notices :P
