The best young defenseman in the league is Erik Karlsson. He's 21 years old and leading all defenseman in scoring, on pace for around 75 points. He's a fantastic skater and a good passer. I'll take him over any other defenseman born in the 90's.

Back when I played, if a guy got hit clean, not only was it accepted as part of the game but your own teamates would laugh at you about it. But hey, what do I know? We also had a hell of a time getting our equipment on the horse to get to the rink too so maybe we were just stupid that way.

Hats off to Stewart!.....I'll take this penalty everytime.....down the road this will make the team stick together. It was a legal hit I know....but the Blues WILL NOT be roughed up or pushed around. Detroit is the best team in hockey no doubt.....but little things like this....will keep making the Blues better and becoming a tight knit group which you need in the playoffs. @mwurl Sure, Bert will always be remember for that above anything else, but I would argue that he is a completely different player with the Red Wings and has become a good two-way power forward. He rarely fights anymore, which shows a lot of growth to me in understanding his value as a scorer and playmaker, as well as maturing and trying to stay out of the rough stuff if he can. He still takes a lot of penalties, and it has a lot to do with his reputation. This rivalry is getting good.

Downey,homer,franzen,abdelkader and draper haven't pulled this crap before even your precious little datsyuk. Then the best part of all you have the 2nd biggest homers in the NHL behind Jack Edwards and Andy Brickley broadcasting their games in Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond trying to preach to the great wing fans how brad Stuart did well in this fight or "OHH wow what a datsyukian goal that was" lay off on your hockey team a little bit and just broadcast the game.

Datsyuk has never done anything dirty his entire career. He has three Lady Byng's for a reason.
Ken and Mick aren't broadcasting games nationally. They are local broadcasts that mostly Wings fans will be watching. We like "Datsyukian dekes" just as much as they do.
I don't know where you're getting the diving and embellishing idea from, but it sounds like it's the trendy thing to say about the Wings because they don't fight. How often do you watch them play?

Are you wings fans that delusional? For the past 5 to 7 years Detroit is always dead last in fights(not saying fighting wins games). There is no more than 5 guys on the wings if that willing to drop the mitts. Tonight's fight was a perfect example of Detroit Red Wing toughness....hit the man while he's down and being held by the refs atta way brad stuart. Stewart kicked Stuart's ass for a clean hit. No winner here except the Wings securing their spot atop the Western Conference. If had been a dirty hit, it would've been Stewart's job to go after him. In this case, the only "right" message to send is for the hittee to go after the hitter.
And for those of you who think the Wings CAN'T fight...ask Otter about Ericsson. Ask Perry about Datsyuk. Big Bert kicked Shane O'Brien's ass twice in one game! Abby can fight too, as can Eaves.

This is exactly what's wrong with hockey today. There's nothing cheap about that hit. It was a great clean hit, then you got shit players that are pissed because there teammate got hit. Don't get me wrong I love the fights, but not because someone got hit cleanly.

So...Chris Stewart won the fight but the Wings scored on the resulting powerplay, but somehow he did the right thing. Someone email Hitchcock. He needs to know that picking fights with non-fighters and beating the crap out of them is the best way to win. The point of playing hockey isn't to send a message or win a fight. As Herm Edwards so plainly stated: "You play to win the game." If you guys think Stewart is the winner here, you're missing the point of playing hockey in the first place.

@donteetpeople you are so wrong. the point of hockey isn't to win the game. it's to win the stanley cup. you can win a game or lose a game who cares, but if you're a tightly knit team where everyone watches the backs of their team mates chances are you'll be very successful. just look at the Bruins. they get in heaps of trouble and yes also lose some games due to this. but in the end it will pay off.

You can't win the Stanley Cup without winning hockey games. The Wings haven't had a real fighter on the team since Darren McCarty. They're always dead last in the league in fighting majors. They're always one of the least penalized teams in the league. Where has that gotten them? You can be a tightly knit team without taking stupid penalties. Stewart took a stupid penalty here and his team paid the price. That's not a positive thing and you won't see Hitchcock endorsing it.

@donteetpeople Sure it was a stupid penalty but it didn't even cost them the game. The roughing penalty in the third did. But I'm pretty sure Stewart's team mates appreciate him more for it. They know if push comes to shove his got their backs.

No, his stupid penalty didn't cost his team the game, but it was in no way positive in terms of its outcome. The roughing penalty in the third didn't cost them the game either. It just killed their chances. They were getting outplayed since the beginning of the second period. His teammates may appreciate his actions but Hitchcock won't. If you take stupid penalties now it becomes habitual and can be a staple of your team later on when it's most important...like the playoffs.

I would love to see any of the guys who are laughing at the fact that Brad Stuart got his ass kicked try and fight him. Everybody is so tough in front of there computer. Its Chris Stewart's job to fight, he trains to fight. Brad Stuart on the other hand is not a fighter, he dose not train at all to fight, he's a stay at home defenseman who can hit. Props to Brad for not backing down even though he knew he'd get his ass beat.
