  • This guy is brilliant. I had a friend who was a MD. He committed suicide. I was depressed for 7 years, This was terrible. At least I wasn't MD. I learned to hold depression at bay, but it never leaves one. It lurks in the background ready to pounce. Mine was triggered by stress during my change of life (ie at my weakest time). Depression is an illness to b feared. Friends are critical, as is good work. Don't seek escape via drugs or drink. It makes things worse. Read the net to learn to cope.

  • He made me so happy with his comedy. The fact that he suffers so much is so sad! And the fact that he shared this with us and helped others like him get recognition of their illness is so commendable! :)

  • @210482fmj Which SHOWS surely that he HAS got something wrong! Stephen Fry has money and great friends/family/lifestyle and yet he tried to kill himself because he thought his life wasn't worth living. What he is saying is that manic depression is REAL, it's not 'oh you've got nothing to be sad about'..it's a mood that he cannot change, and personally I think he, and all others with this condition, are so brave and so strong to cope with it!

  • @210482fmj With respect, I can see you have never suffered from depression. The thing about depression one doesn't usually doesn't need a reason to be depressed. This is one thing that makes depression so hard to combat...it's ephemeral, not graspable. It's like falling into a dark pit without sides. However, since researching on the web, I finally found out how to combat and at least hold Depression at bay. It can never be totally eliminatated.

  • @directorcj75 I agree with what you are saying but again so what if you do feel depressed. WE have food and water and those people in parts of africa have nothing. It still makes depression look quite minor in comparison. COmpare depression and suical thoughts to people who have lost limbs in war and accidents e.t.c. I agree with you though. Oh and also i do suffer form depression so you can see how you cannot judge a person over an internet forum. I have learned to enjoy it

  • im 14, my grandfather had bipolar but my dad does not. could i get it in later life?

  • @YoungShapz studies show you will have a slightly increased chance

  • I love Carrie Fisher.

  • Its sad that a man who has brought me so much happiness and joy, who has helped me overcome my own darkness, has suffered so greatly. I truly appreciate Stephen Frys existence and this documentary brought me a closer understanding of bipolarity and those in my life suffering of it

  • the song at 2:55 is called "Faithless - Insomnia"

  • Carrie fisher seems more aspie..she seems to have the collector's tendency.

  • @WorldOfLove2 that's a hoarding disorder related to OCD which is often comorbid with bipolar disorder. The more ya know!

  • What's the music called at 2:57 please answer.

  • What's the music called at 8:06? I'm pretty sure I heard it in a movie, I thought 'The Oxford Murders'?

  • @sevencoloredwar the cinematic orchestra, the man with the video camera

  • @profbucko Thank you!

  • Aaah, Stephen Fry. :( Thank you so much for making this. I suffered for silence in years before I was diagnosed, and even then I wouldn't admit I had a problem. I learned the hard way recently that I have to be on medication to remain stable. It's taken me all this time to start really learning to live with it.

  • Fry's story is heartbreaking. But surely, something good must have come out of the events of 1994? Before then, he had done largely comedic roles. Look at him now; he is seen more as an intellectual than a comedian.

  • I hope this would made me understand what Borderline PD and Bipolar PD is all about.

  • Great stuff.

  • thanks for this

  • Love, love, love this man. I greatly appreciate his making this and bringing the condition into a more personal light. Hits a little close to home and at first I was afraid to watch the whole thing, but it's a beautiful film. :)

  • she really is ''too weird to live, too rare to die''

  • I ofter feel that nothing is fast enough for me

  • This documentary is split off into so many small vids -- HOW DEPRESSING -- I must be a manic emo .... I'm going into one of my Snuffaluffagus Moods... OHHHhhhhhh... I need a Four Loko, some nachos, and some pills from Wally World meds department...

  • @DancingSpiderman fuck you!this is a serious subject!! I'm sorry...i overeacted, i love you. Fuck you!! You can't eat nachos AND pills, it's highly unsafe!! I'm sorry...i didn't realize you were joking, i love you. Fuck you!!

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY STEPHEN!!!

  • The music at that point is manic becasue the subject is mania, seems a good choice to me.

  • Thanks for uploading this! Stephen Fry is all grace and kindness as always, but right now I'm off to rediscover vintage Robbie.

  • 2.55 - highly inappropriate music?

  • @stitcha123 I agree......I find music of the 21st century depressing anyway.

  • @stitcha123 Not to mention...shit music

  • @stitcha123 i wud agree with this entirely

  • @stitcha123 I don't hear it. When I saw your comment I was expecting something wacky or too happy or something, but it just sounds like a straightforward synth riff of the type used to open any show like this (particularly when it kicks in with the appearance of the Hollywood sign).

  • @DarkRider69 that track is used int he UK often to denote something upbeat, happy, partytime, and motivating and upbeat. At odds with a documentary about depression. yes i know, hollywood sign etc, but it seems at odds with fry, and his voiceover here. At no other point in the documentary is any type of music used. and haha, robbie williams

  • @stitcha123 The real inappropriate music starts at 4:54 lol.

  • @stitcha123 well seeing as extreme highs are a part of bi polar disorder then this jovial music surely isnt totally irrelevent?

  • @fatcatsarefun id disagree.

  • @stitcha123 Its not if you suffer the illness its actually highly appropriate

  • @jamesvozar1 oh shut up, i dont give a fuck what you think. my comment succeeded in getting a number of thumbs up. i make documentaries. just be quiet.

  • @stitcha123 no, it's more like the manic in manic depressive

  • @thisisthealias there are a number of tracks that would suit it better. and the v.o does the work of explaining the manic. no need for the shit inappropriate track

  • @stitcha123 not at all. that song is classic! insomnia by faithless, and you know manic depressive do suffer from insomnia in their manic phases.

  • @Midskal lol so do insomniacs. ur reight though, faithless are a bit classic. they seem so old now tho...... :(

  • @stitcha123 I thinks its perfect. Very "manic"

  • @24link135 oh for fucks sake.
