  • Bobby Bloom is a Jamaican pimp, mon

  • Bobby Bloom did not accidentally shoot himself. You're thinking of Chicago guitarist Terry Kath, maybe. Bloom was killed in a barroom in a fight over a girl.

  • @luthierboy According to WIKIPEDIA, and at least one other source, Bobby Bloom did in fact shoot himself.

  • the song madd up

  • Have always loved this song. Didn't know that Bloom accidentally shot himself, cleaning his gun. What a waste. Thanks for posting this.

  • Bloody hell I always thought he was a black guy.But he has a wonderful voice pity no more hits.Wonder what he is doing? that is if he is still with us.

  • I thought he was an African-American like Richie Havens; He's Caucasian?!! I'm shocked!

  • If I was paddling down a creek and all of a sudden a bunch of women jumped up from the weeds, I'd probably tip over! Nice Brady Bunch 'fro on the singer.

  • Ill be there come saturday morning mo bay to negrill ya mon ire

  • Truly a feel good song Bobby made the world Happier with his music, Love it!!

God Bless Bobby Bloom! ( RIP)......

  • Michael Jackson would want his hair back if either of them were alive. Who that bloke that sings top of the bay, and is also white?

  • @chriswandatownley1 The name of the song is Dock of the Bay, sung by Otis Redding. Not white. :-)

  • I have not seen this clip before and I must say that I am surprised, I was expecting a Jamaican Singer.

  • Very Cool video!! Thank you for posting this great, top 10, 1970, timeless, classic, dancer!

Bobby Bloom died way, way too soon in his career!

Happy Birthday, Bobby, & R.I.P. Happy Mardi Gras!! ***DAVE♫♫♫♫DJ***

  • Well at least he's got an afro! Love the song though.

  • are there no good copys of this song or is it all stupid concerts and documentrys some one needs to make a lyric video for this song like every other song that has been made.

  • Comment removed

  • I like it when USA and UK mess up Jamaican music. This song almost stands on it's own. It's not calypso really. It's not soul. It kind of has a chain gang/motown feel to it...sort of. It's not rocksteady or reggae. Although, plenty of reggae artists cover it. Freddie Notes and The Rudies doing my favorite version. Great song. It's too bad he wasn't as inspired when writing his other songs.

  • fantastic record well done bobby r i p

  • I love how the women just "POP" outta the bushes! probably the only one who could cover this song and do it justice would be Jimmy Buffett

  • I love the kind of a mellow swing beat the lyrics have, I like to write songs to it.

  • It Takes you someplace away from the cold and winter. Like listening to Bertie Higgins "Key Largo".

  • You ain't been 'til you been high 'n Montego Bay. SING OUT!

  • Always thought it was a black guy...cool song and great video!

  • @reecolor

No, he just stole it from one.

  • @reecolor thank you, I also thought it was a black guy singing this as well....unfortunately, he died much too early in his career. :(

  • This song was 40 years ago no.10 in the world charts #bobby #bloom

  • Oh Ehm Gee! I was just in Montego Bay a week ago!

  • This song was 40 years ago no.10 in the world charts #bobby #bloom

  • wow so old school

  • talk about an iconic sound . I have always loved this song Jr.

  • When you're down, just play this song, and it'll put a smile back on your face.

  • music back in the 60s and 70s are just great. today is shit that came from somewhere.

  • This song was 40 years ago no.6 in the world charts #bobby #bloom

  • Nice that this showed up in a search for Thin White Line, Bobby Porter used to sing this acappella at quite a few of our shows!!

  • very cool song!;-)

  • I love it!

  • wonderful song wonderful voice

  • great song (i agree with barnfresh bring back proper music!

  • Jeff Barry told discovery magazine he was murdered over a woman I read that article about fifteen years ago. Officially he died cleaning a hand gun. So whats the real deal man.

  • This was one of my all time faves when I was a kid. This and Little Willy (Sweet). There are other versions of this in the YouTube-Sphere but I like this one because it has the original video and Bobby Bloom doing an intro voice-over. Look closely for the reed dancers!

  • yeh its a great song alright, anybody my age will remember so many things from that time, his voice fooled millions , one thing i want to say is, the music world should of stopped in the early 1970s,look at the joint today YUK,fuckin depresses me man,no real music out there, just recycled wanna be,s and pre fabricated wanna be stars in the name of fooling the kids and keeping the rich corperates alive with their plastic empty vile bullshit music.raise your glass to more solid and happier times!

  • He's got the same kind of voice as Bill Medley of the Rightous Brothers (think Top Gun)

  • Bobby died 4 years later in 1974 from an accidental gun shot at the age of 27.

He never got the chance to be a really big hit other than this beautiful song.

  • I was looking for this song!!!! love it xD

  • Love the Carmen Miranda dancers

  • I love this tune. I always thought it was a black dude that sang it. Great song!

  • Circa 1970's?

  • I agree - thought this artist was black. Great tune. Thank you for posting it.

  • From France : Wonderful i love

  • When u grew up w/ this kind of music--it just doesn't get any better than this. Iconic '70's. Greatest era of music in our lifetimes IMHO.

  • Oooh Snap! I thought he was Black! Just goes to show, music is color blind. I dig this!

  • My favorite shower song lol

  • this is the missing righteous brother...yes i always thought he was a black man also

  • There is something rather haunting about this video. Bobby is so vibrant, and alive. His wonderful and warm baritones just let you dive into Jamaica, and feel what it's about. I truly miss this man who's been gone for so long, and this is one of my most favorite songs.

  • If all you think of today's music is that it is 'manufactured crap' then you're not really looking. If you take the time to listen and explore, some of the best bands ever to exist are flying under the radar right now. Don't take mainstream pop as the face of a generation of music - stop complaining and investigate what is really out there. I personally love where our world's music scene is at present.

Good song, makes me think of my old 8-track player, busted when I put some polka in it

  • The hair is where Bobby Bloom is a winner. The shirt and the teeth too!

  • One of the best oldies. Love this tune!!!

  • If you are concerned about whether the person singing is 'white' or 'black' you have already missed the boat.

  • @jahnbon It;s just a preceptive of what was in our minds. First thing you think of when someone says Jamaica is Black. It's not racist, just a preconceived notion. When i say Louis Prima, many Italians assume he was of a mixed race, no doubt because of his singing and style - just like Bobby Bloom.

  • i thot he was black,i love him

  • I would have bet good money that this song was sung by a native Jamaican.

  • he was shot and killed in 1974 in a scuffle over a girl he probably would had done more music he was 29 years old

  • Spoke too soon on one thing - it's a shame they cut off the ending of this song, where Mr. Bloom sang, a capella, the signature verse from "Oh, what a beautiful morning" (frm Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Oklahoma") followed by a small trailing series of acoustic guitar chords to end the song. Very interesting juxtaposition from the main part of the song to the ending, made all the more poignant with Mr. Bloom's death in 1974.

  • Mr. Bloom sounded like a caribbean Gordon Lightfoot with a tuba instead of an acoustic guitar for accompaniment - great song.

  • Love this song since it came out. Great early video w/ light comic relief! I am glad that The Staple Singers didn't get caught up in all that "black" or "white" world when they recorded Bobby's great tune Heavy Makes You Happy (Sha-Na Boom Boom)

  • Bear in mind this video was a decade pre-MTV. Pre-MTV music shows had a fraction of the audience (and acts) usually after midnight(your)local time. Throw in your personal filters and that's just the way it was. Its no wonder why this music vid confuses people.

  • does anyone have this version of the song I would sure love to have it.

  • Oh my...haven't heard this song in years!!!!!! Thank you for the great memories!

  • I recorded demos with Bobby. My ex boss married his widow after the accident. I love this song too. I have a cassette somewhere with some of his demos... If the magnatism remains after 40 years. He was a great musician. Did a Pepsi commercial when I knew him. Thanks 4 posting this vid.

  • Long live the 60's and the seventies's.

    Fantastic voice!

  • What a song! His voice had soul! So sad the way he died at 28. :(

  • hes white!?

  • I love love loveee this song.

I especially love when the random chicks jump out from behind the grass. :D

  • The video is as fun as the song, all for far less than some 5 million dollars i am sure. Clever rules over big production budget. Great song and the video catches the feel of it so well. Thanks for having this one up. Is one of the most catchy songs i have heard. Always have loved it.

  • Epic Whit-fro, Epic Chin.

  • schmalzlocke

  • I've always loved this song. Just gets right to the soul and makes it wanna dance. But, like thestevo46, I thought Bobby was a black man. He's got the same soulful tone to his voice. Great video. Love it when I get the see the artist perform. :)

  • This video is killing me! Bobby Bloom loves him some Montego Bay! :) The video is the epitome of the 70s. Funny.

  • a beautiful song.........pity it wasn't 1979 in uk....................bobby bloom would have been more popular with reggae.

  • @freddyrude63 '69 was the original skinhead movement.

  • I'm going to be there on Saturday...my morning theme song! He does look a bit like Jim Carey from the Mask though...as mentioned previously.

  • Before seeing this if anyone would have told me this was a white I've never believe it :-)

  • The women on the shore remind me of Chi-Chi's hostesses and waitresses

  • He kinda looks like Lurch from The Addams Family. But in a good way.

  • I have to say, this was always a good song, and what a great voice he had! God bless Bobby Bloom.

  • i love how the people just randomly pop up out of no where

  • Wow. Thank you so much for giving me visuals to this song of my childhood. It is all that much more cool.

  • i fell in love with this song ever since I came to USA in 1970, 40 years later I still love it.

  • Bobby was a member of NY Doowop group The Imaginations.

  • One of the best songs to come out of that period. Too bad for the "one hit wonder" label, Bobby was a talented guy. RIP.

  • Someone must have the follow up Heavy Makes You Happy. Great song

  • Bobby I miss you you left us to soon

    your friend tony

  • lmfao i can't watch this video without thinking of jim carry as the mask lol.

  • this is such a great song

  • wow.were all these 70's songs about 2 1/2 minutes long?

  • @bobbyeph No, they were just great songs. Not like the useless shit, with no originality released now. I feel sorry for anyone born or at least not hearing the great music from 1966-1976.

  • @maximum1954 Like I JUST said to wolf1percenter, "You got THAT right!!!!!!"

  • @maximum1954 well i could say the same about the eighties and nineties. i'm not too familiar with songs from 1966-76.

  • @maximum1954 Well, max, I kind of agree with you. There was lots of good stuff from '66 to '76, but there was an overpowering load of crap out there at the same time. Now is the most beautiful time. The internet has opened everything up.

  • @mvonwahlde True, very true.

We remember the good stuff of course, but the thing is, we STILL play it.

How many of today's songs will be requested at 20th anniversary parties?

Who can't help but at least tap a foot when the hear this song.

You can play it in a nursing home and get a response.

Do you thing you will get that to Katy Perry?

  • @Laceykat66 If we look beyond the mass marketed stuff the the music business promotes, then I think that there is more music available today that will stand the test of time. Although I might be persuaded that the best of 65-75 is better than the best of other periods, I still think that there is more really good stuff available right right now than there was at any other time.

FWIW, I don't think I have ever listened to a Katy Perry song!

  • @Laceykat66 fuck katy perry

  • @bakednfried Um, is that an observation or a personal request because I don't really know her that well and don't know if she preforms on demand.

I'll look into it for you though.

    wink wink

  • Wow good video with this song.

  • He's got alot of teeth, doesn't he?

And I don't think those ladies are native Jamaicans. My two cents.

  • Of course they are native...as soon as they spot someone on the river, that's what they naturally do..they come to the rivers edge and dance completely in sync with the song you happen to be humming... :p lol At least thats what happens in all the Bollywood stuff :(

  • lol

  • Yeah, in a good way.

  • why does he sing with his head tilted to the side?? lol

  • lol - or else he'd go the wrong way in his boat ? : )

  • lmao...perhaps that's how it's done in Montego Bay...LOL

  • lol :o)

  • looooooooooooooooooooooool so true

  • Because singers have habits. It just IS. Duh.

  • @wheelchairmommy Because it's all on the right side in Montego Bay. Yes, it's how he steers the boat, otherwise he would be going in circles. Funny question. Great song.

  • Rofl, no, at 1:00...it is straight for 0.012 seconds while he is transitioning to a right-tilt. lol ;)

  • A classic. Bobby Bloom did some great singles for the Kama Sutra label prior to this one. When "Montego Bay" came out, he performed it on American Bandstand and told a great story about how he wrote "Heavy Makes You Happy" for the Monkees, but the Staple Singers covered it instead. Sadly, Bobby Bloom committed suicide a few years after this 1970 hit. He is greatly missed.

  • Although he did suffer from depression, Bobby Bloom didn't commit suicide. He was killed when he was 28 (3 years after "Montego Bay") after charging into a room in a fight over a girl, and was accidentally shot in a scuffle with a man who was never identified. (according to Wikepedia.)

  • You're right in that is the account that is often given in his biographies. Interestingly enough, at the time that he died, the obit that I read said that his passing was a suicide. It didn't make sense, as he had so much going for him. Whatever the case, it was a great loss.

  • He probably is haha.

He could pass for a 70's porn star

  • bobby bloom looks like he's hung like a horse!! mmm...delicious!!

  • keylargo, montego, baby why don't we go to aruba jamaica, ooh i wanna take ya down to kokomo.

  • good to hear this again, real music, not manufactured like todays crap

  • @wolf1percenter You got THAT right!!!!!!

  • This video and most oldies programmers lop off the actual ending of this song, an a cappella version of "Oh! What a Beautiful Mornin'" from "Oklahoma", which is a wise choice.

  • american idol????? AHHHHHH!!!!!! I hate that show and my comments were just for humor anyway. not meant to offend , just for a chuckle.

  • What a shallow comment. I'm guessing you're a big Am. Idol fan too. Most of those people are singers who look good and not song writer/composer/singer/musician... who may not look like a god/goddess. I'll take the latter for AmIdols are just glorified karaoke singers.

  • no offense to any of them but alot of the one hit wonders from the 70's could have never made it in the video age. they just didn't have the looks for the camera. artists such as bobby bloom, king harvest, bob welch, starstruck and terry jacks are just some that were just not camera friendly. although, look at the rolling stones so i could be wrong, tho.

  • Oh yeah, sure. . .and Snoop Dogg is James Dean. LOL.

  • The horrifying '70s clothes and hairdon'ts didn't help. I have a fear of polyester thanks to starting kindergarten in 1970.

  • jesus! always loved this song, always thought bobby bloom was a black man, never knew a white guy could get to these tones, only thought a black man could sing like this, very surprised!!

  • guess you never heard Michael Bolton :)

  • me too or a hairy fat older white dufde in my mind

  • @thestevo46 Most people thought he was a brotha :-) he did have that kind of voice didn't he

    May he R.I.P.

  • @thestevo46 if that's the case, check out The O'Kaysions I'm A Girl Watcher.

  • @thestevo46 yes you racist imbecile, white men can sing just as well as black men

  • @eaglestriker24 Yea, like Michael Bolton!

  • @thestevo46 - I thought he was Black too. He totally sounds like a Black man.

  • @thestevo46

David Clayton Thomas was another white guy with those tones.

  • @thestevo46 ....same here stevo46...I always thought he was black too...lol...too funny!

  • Has it REALLY been 40 years ?!? Too bad Bobby died-No tellin' what great things could have come from him...

  • Dance in the street...

  • i have always loved this song... thanks so much for posting it!

  • I Didnt know Mr Brady was an singer.

  • The best part of the song is his version of "Oh What A Beautiful Morning" it happens at the end of the song. This version cuts out to quick. From August of 1997 to sept 1999 my life was pure hell. Every morning I would play the end of this song just to hear him sing "Oh What A Beautiful Morning" it realy helped me big time. RIP BOBBY.

  • Bliss! I'm glad I've lived to see Bobby Bloom singing!

  • This song makes me feel good. ^_^...

    Love and light

    Namaste

  • I heard this song when i was 5 it was #8 in US & #3 in UK in 1970. I still love listening to this song since i 1st heard it, it brings back memories.
