Hmm, I haven't seen this for quite some time, but it appears to not only be about Akio and Anthy, but about Dios as well, a decay of idealism into perversion. It was a very interesting take! Especially since I believe that Akio didn't turn into Akio in a single night, but slowly changed into that persona, before completely abandoning Dios, and heading these games to "retrieve his innocence".
