Several of the people i know should watch this, and drill the thought of 'retard' as being offensive, my niece who is only 7 years old is picked on by classmates as young as 6 or 7, it hurts, and this is right. Respect should be the main alternative here

Yes, I agree that all people should be treated with respect, but trying to police the English language and remove words that you personally find offensive is ridiculous! People are free to use words however they want to, and if you have a problem with that, then it's YOUR problem, not a problem with the English language! I think the issue isn't about being able to police the english language. No one is trying to make a law so that you will go to jail if you say it. What they're saying is that it's hurtful and asking you not to. You don't have to listen. I mean, they're just asking for a little dignity. You don't want to give it, solely your choice.

the word retard is often used synonymously with bad or unintelligent. when used in a pejorative way, as it all too often is, it is offensive, since it translates as a person who has a intellectual disability is bad. we need to learn to see past people's disabilities and focus on their abilities. it is not a matter of telling you what you can and can not say. i just want you to understand how hurtful the word retard is, and to ask you to not use the term as it offends a large number of people
