  • Can you please do the first section...

Knit about 1 inch of garter stitch edging as follows:

(WS) p1, knit across until last stitch, p1

(RS) slip 1, knit across until last stitch, slip 1

Repeat for about 8 rows, or until it is as long as you like. End on a WS row.

please can you show us how to do this?

  • @miat789 Hi!!!! I'm gearing up for the holiday season and am soooo busy, but it's super easy. Let me explain a couple things. WS means wrong side, RS means right side or public or pretty side. The 1st row of the pattern begins with you working the first WS row - you can mark your WS with a safety pin if you like. Garter Stitch is just term meaning "knit every row", but since this has a chain look edge we have to treat the 1st and last stitch a bit different - otherwise for garter you would.....

  • @miat789 con't.... knit every stitch of the entire row then turn and knit every stitch again - this creates a bumpy edge so to smooth it out we'll treat the edges differently so we'll begin the first row of the WS with a single purl stitch then you'll knit all the across until 1 stitch remains and that stitch you will purl. Turn your work and now your about to begin the RS. Again we'll work the 1st and last stitch differently to get the chain look edge so on the RS row you will slip the 1st...

  • @miat789 con't.... stitch. Unless otherwise stated a slipped stitch is slipped purl-wise. This mean you will stitch your needle into the stitch on your left needle like you were going to purl it, but instead of wrapping the yarn around the needle, pulling it through and sticking the new stitch on right needle, you'll NOT wrap the yarn rather simply transfer that left stitch to the right needle. Then on the RS row you knit across to the last stitch and again you'll that last stitch.......

  • @miat789 I sure hope that helps. I forgot that this explanation wouldn't fit in one reply so anyone reading this will have to read from the reply on the bottom of your screen up. There are TONS of videos showing how to knit, purl and slip stitches so I'm sure you'll get it.

    Happy Holidays!

  • @MarleneD1216 Thanks sooo much! I think that I got it... Now I just have to do the other 8 rows and then figure out how to bind off the knitting...

  • For goodness sakes people, the instructions aren't hard to find. She tells you in the very beginning of the video where to go to find the written instructions. Lighten up.

  • The background noise was very distracting and pattern directions were never given.

  • @bhgram17 The written pattern directions can be found by googling Brooke Nelson column of leaves scarf. It is not my pattern, I only made some videos of how to do it for a friend which got popular on YouTube so I didn't really care about the background noise when I did it.

I have a whole playlist of each row plus this video that explains the pattern. I recommend getting the pattern from Brooke's site rather than trying to just "knit along"

  • I've been trying to do this scarf several times and not doing it right. This was helpful.

  • whats the web page she mention at second 18. Can anybody tell me. Thanks

  • @juanrogu The webpage is BrookeNelson. You can Google Brooke Nelson's Column of Leaves scarf to get to find her site and print the pattern from there.

  • thanx for sharing........

    k

  • nice

  • What size needle did you use? The pattern says it doesn't really matter, but I used a size 8 instead of size 7, and it came out funny looking.

  • @boomonkeyluv I tend to knit a bit loose so generally I use 1 or 2 needle sizes smaller than the pattern says. Looking at my notes for this project I used a size 3 needle with a sport weight yarn. Sport weight is thinner than worsted weight so a smaller needle should have been used anyway regardless. The pattern does say to use a size 7 with worsted weight. If I were to use worsted weight I would probably use a size 5 for this project. What kind of yarn are you using? Blocking does wonders too.

  • @MarleneD1216 I'm using Simply Soft worsted weight yarn. I'll try the smaller needles, and hopefully it will help. Thank you!

  • Thanks!! Try to sell them in Etsy or Ebay, I am sure you'll be make a lot money. You're very talent!!

  • Beautiful do you make them and sell them?

  • @TEEWEE01 Nope, I don't sell them.

  • good patten !

  • thank you for replying and for the encouragement, you're awsome like your work, I will try it because it is really something that is worth the effort!!!!!

  • this is a fantastic desighn, I am not experienced enough to attempt but it is really awesome!

  • @pontikokou1 If you can make a knit stitch and make a purl stitch you can do this! The hardest stitch to make is the P2TBL, which just a variation of a purl stitch in which the needle is inserted from the back rather than the front and you knit 2 stitches off the left needle rather than one.

Go slow. Count your stitches. You can do this!

  • If you had to approximate, how long does it take to make this scarf?

  • @whippedcreampineappl As I recall, it took me 20 minutes to knit one repeat (the 8 rows of the pattern). Of course it depends on your yarn, tension and needle size too. I *think* I got about 1.25" per repeat. At that rate if I want a scarf that is 5' long I would have to knit 48 repeats. (48x20mins=960. 960/60= 16 hours). That's a pretty good estimate.

  • It is a good patten to do.

  • I used sport weight yarn. Mine has been hanging for a while now, but when flattened out (not stretched, but flattened) it's about 5". When it hangs the ends curl back some so the scarf appears more like 4".

9" is very wide for worsted and a size 6 needle. You're casting on the correct # sts though. What kind of yarn are you using? Does your bottom border of garter stitch look like most of your other worsted weight? The rows increase to 41 then back to 39... you're still good with that?

  • Thank you for these videos...we need more of detailed for pattern videos... They are great...not that many out there

  • Marlene, is there anyway you can post pictures on what the scarf looks like as you begin each row...I can't remember what row I ended on exactly, and I'm trying to watch your videos to see what part of the leaf is created before each row is started. I know that I am on one of the rows that begin with a slip stitch, but other than that I'm not sure..

  • I stink at patterns I didn't think reading instructions on how to put something together would be so hard but I tried with a glove pattern and I'm still confused so I hope I can keep up with this it is a gorgeous scarf I'd love to have one or some of those.

  • It's pretty easy actually. It's best to count the # of stitches you have after completing each row at least to start. and USE A LIFELINE (explained in video 8 I believe). Knowing how to slip stitches back off from just having been worked to ready to work again is helpful, but not necessary.

Just go slow. Pay attention. Be observant how the stitches form when you make them. Sometimes you can tell something isn't right just how it feels when you knit it.

Hope this kills any pattern phobia!

  • I hope it does too I'm gonna be extra careful and write everything and watch it three times if I have to, I'm gonna start today, thanks for the helpful tips I'm excited.
