@59swl, if you want to talk about 'questionable' groups or ideologies, socialism is the most questionable of them all. it has failed miserably everywhere it has been tried, eventually leads to the loss of all individual liberties, kills economies via lack of competition and incentive for innovation... i could go on and on and on. perhaps YOU should get out a history book and start reading.
@chrisl7388 yea.... spend a week in canada and you will see that is NOT true, there quality of life is so much better than ours and there all very wealthy, the min wage in american dollars is like 15 dollars, there money is stronger they live longer, there a very socalist country and yet they still have all the freedoms we have in fact there fede3ral government has waay less control over prvovincal laws than our federal government has over state laws
@Runesinger Thanks for posting this! I lived in WA from 1982-1989 and I'd never heard this song so Yelm Middle and High Schools were obviously not teaching it (I graduated HS in '89). Nice slide show, too. And I definitely agree with your sentiments about WA politics.
@chrisl7388 It's too bad our State song is not taught in the schools anymore. I learned the State song in 3rd grade, but that was back when society was a little more normal. They are denying the school-children today something beautiful. Why are they so oppose to showing children things of beauty?
I sang 'Washington, My Home' in the turbulent '60's and early '70's in, gosh, a choir from the public school system (Gasp!). Performing it before - surprise again - such questionable civic groups like a professional women's group, Elks, and at a Washington State Lawyers (before they became, what you probably feel, so 'left-wing'...) convention in Moses Lake. Tell me, where did you sing our state song again?...
@kerryhooks Again, what's with the name-calling ('Soviet Union of King County')? Want to play who has the bluer blood game? My family is listed officially as Oregon Pioneers, an ancestor fought in the Battle of Bunker Hill and have a tie to at least one of the voyagers on the Mayflower of 1620. Remember it has been 'socialized' public power that brings electricity to your home (where do you think Puget Energy buys some of its power from?). I say to you, King County, love it or leave it!'
@kerryhooks 'Who stole my state?' Get a grip and get out a history book, fella. Our Washington state has always known (but maybe not you) to have had a turbulent past, including those 'questionable' Bull Moose Party followers, anarchists, Communists, John Birchers, Owl Party members, and today's Tea Party adherents. Never have understood why some people who served in the military seem to think it's their God-given right to act that 'service to the country' makes them an expert in patriotism.
@kerryhooks Speaking from the Puget Sound, the few nutjobs are getting fewer and fewer as the people are waking up to take back Washington State. My family were pioneers out here, and we can fight to win it back just like the old days. They make such a big deal about the Presidential elections, but state government is what really matters. It's time for the people of Washington State to have their voice heard again.
@Runesinger Could you answer me this: what does 'take back' our state mean? I think - and I am sure you'll incorrectly try to correct me - this phrase came out of the era when the witch-hunting of Sen. Joseph McCarthy (R-WI) and the blacklist of the '50's were the order of the day. And this own state's Cantwell (R-Spokane) legislative committee going after higher ed teachers because of their political beliefs. Get out a history book if you don't know any of this...
@kerryhooks I don't really know why the State song is not taught anymore. I learned it in 3rd grade. I think our state is so infested with left-wing socialists now, and they don't like the values that the State Song espouses. Too much about God, freedom, defense, etc.
Excuse me? I guess I am considered one of your "left-wing Socialists" you mentioned. Born and reared (not raised as so many incorrectly say...) in Washington state, twice elected to the Electoral College, a House page in high school, finalist and honorable mention in Law Day two years running, etc. I have friends who are what some call 'rabid' Republicans and ardent conservatives (some maybe John Birchers, Tea Party and NRA members...). But I was reared without name-calling...
Really liked that part with Redmond Town Center!

@Blueal12 It wouldn't really represent Washington without Redmond and Microsoft!
