  • I Play this game on my commodore 64, and i can only get past first level, after i get past first level it goes to the blue screen part and stays there. Any Suggestions??

I Will post video soon of what i mean..

  • This game is why I got an Amiga. I wanted to play my friend's dragon's lair, but got this game instead. I knew the graphiics would be bad, but didn't realize the play would suck too!

  • As a 6yr old playing this at the time...i only got to the swinging rope part bullshit ONCE....Talk about a random trail and error game

  • I even had nightmares from this freaking game. The falling platform part was really scary.

  • The second level had a weird trick to it... you had to tap the joystick TWICE in the direction you wanted to move.

This was an ambitious game for sure, too bad the gameplay was so frustrating.

  • I remember having this game for my C64. Loved it!

  • this game used to stress me out everytime I played it

  • The music was the best thing about this game, and the worst. It made me want to keep playing, even though I didn't have a fucking clue WHAT was going on.

  • I think I used to get to the fire/ropes and give up. Worst game ever if you wanted not to break your computer

  • I think my copy of this was glitched, I could never get past the last pit by the dragon even after having him torch it time after time. On the other side of my floppy disk was the Escape from Singe's Castle. At least I was able to beat that.

  • 25 years later and I learn the princess has fat legs.

  • Brilliant! I never got past that damned checkerboard guy. You are great!

  • I never got past that damned second level , nice to see someone do it.

  • Come on people, I defeated this on the C64 as a kid. LOL

  • Ah man! This game either made you or broke you! Pure frustration - if the gameplay didn't drive you insane it was the FUCKING music!

  • oh man, I wasted half of my childhood trying to figure this game out

  • One of the most classic arguments for gameplay over graphics

  • Xbox 360 and PS3 got nothing on these graphics.

  • Great game, I can't see differences between this and the arcade version...

  • love the videos - well done!

  • Dragon's Lair meets Battletoads...

  • I agree, totally annoying and frustrating...

  • So cinematic.

  • kudos for patience. I had this and never saw past the first screen. Only good thing was the music

  • I had this game. It made me furious... I would rather have my testicles pierced than to play this game from start to finish.

  • ohh my ...i remember this..it was pure hell lol

  • Although this game is cult, I hate it. I remember that the game play was very unhandy and weird.

  • lol, the chick you rescue at the end has cankles and is a foot taller than you

  • this game nearly gave me a nervous breakdown at 12 years old..as others have said 'what were you supposed to do!!!'..finally I have closure!

  • I remember spending many a summer day when I was a kid trying to beat this game. I don't think I was ever able to finally beat that knight at the end.

  • why cant the nes have game play like that in thier dl game

  • Thanks for posting. I had this game when I was about 13 for the C64. I never got past the part where you have to row a boat through the underground dungeon and I was always curious about how the rest of the game looked. Now I know.

  • Wrong game mate, you're talking about Dragon's Lair II :-)

  • @DragstMan Ah, okay. My memory really is slipping.

  • @DragstMan that game was just weird

  • I never made it past the second stage back in the days. Looking at the full thing in all its horrendous length, difficulty and patience-testing game-play makes me very proud of my decision to give up as soon as I did. I am SO glad I never paid for this piece of rubbish - piracy seemed to be the norm back than, at least for the C64...

I have tremendous respect for everyone who made it past stage 3 or 4 or so in ANY version of this game.

  • Okay I'm just gonna' come right out and say it-Dragon's Lair sucks!! It was an RPG arcade game?? This, however is 100%better than the arcade garbage.

  • OMG!!! Talk about memories!!!!

  • You gotta credit this game for its diverse gameplay.

  • Insane game!

  • this is a fucking bad ass!

  • This is probly The best versoin of DL!

  • Coleco ADAM Version is same version, except it had better graphics and sound.

  • I'd like to know what the guys were smokin when they thought converting Dragons Lair to a C64 was a good idea.

Hilariously bad ...the gameplay and execution was dated even back then !

  • wow, thank you for posting this, still remember i was like 7 years old, i was never able to get passed that 1st level where the spider is, annoyingly hard game, this is the first time ever that I am able to see that there is something past that level!! 20+ years later!

  • LMAO this looks funny ^^ in a very good way

  • This was one case where the graphics were so bad it was difficult to tell what you were doing and how you were supposed to get past the bad guys. I don't think I ever made it past the first hall level.

  • I didn't pass the first screen either. So hard.. but interesting to see how the game continues. I made better in Dragons Lair II on C64 :)

  • Me too. Remember loading it up and none of my mates could beat the first level. We tried though, impossible, allmost.

  • We had seriously high expectations for this game because of the arcade version, which had amazing cartoon graphics, if you remember. This didn't really fulfill that, but had amazing Rob Hubbard music, which more than made up for it :)

  • this game sucks bigtime. you can only beat if with a walkthrough or if you try 1000 times each level.

some music was quite good though.

theres a great 3D conversion of the original Dragons Lair available for xbox, which is really fun to play!

  • All Dragon's Lair games suck horendous ass! but the one you've got to smash is the NES one. That game sucks grizzly bear terd.

  • No they don't. The NES one does, though.

  • At least the c64 version is playable compared to the NES version.

  • didnt liked this game , insane loading times and boring

  • BELLO MA DIFFICILISSIMO!!!!

  • Awesome game! Too sad I didn't knew it back in the good times :(

  • The kids of today will never know the thrill of playing C64 in the 80's. Nothing has come close since.

  • Oh so true...

  • Yeah...But hey. What happens when you give a child a C64 instead new generation consoles?

  • Gah! I could never pass the chessboard.

  • bellissimo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 90% of everything is shit. This is part of those 90%.

  • Sto gioco me stava sur cazzo!

  • To quote Angry Video Game Nerd, "this game is ass!"

  • I had this exact game! I got all the way to singe but never could defeat him...ty

  • lol.. I remember playing this on my C64.. good times

  • ti amo commodore 64!!!!!!!!

  • A walthrough from the c64 game of the Arcade conversation "Dragon's lair" I've cutted some scenes from the chessboard level to keep the 10 minutes limitation.

Lol, you mean conversion. not coversation.

  • I hated this! I never actually got beyond the second screen (on ZX Spectrum). Tried to take it back to Menzies where I bought it but they wouldn't give me my money back.

  • I bought this game for about 99 cents at Sears on blowout. One thing I like about some of these 8-bit PC games is how each stage is it's own thing... lots of variety. This game actually wasn't very hard, just tedious memorization.

  • Yep memorization and a bitch and a half to figure out. But doable. I don't recall ever being able to save the game and I just got good at memorizing and finally completing this game at my friends house roughly about two decades ago :)

  • My god, people think games have shitty control now? They have no idea how much it sucked to play games like this without anything better to try.

I like Dragons Lair because of nostalgia, but I have no desire to try to play it again.

  • The graphics of Dragon's Lair and Space Ace were excellent. Too bad you don't see those around arcades anymore. Too much maintenance and such. Of course I don't know of many arcades that are left to be honest. By today's standards one game I actually enjoyed playing in an arcade years back was Fly High Japan. Pretty funny when you can't land the passenger jetliner :)

  • How the hell were you supposed to ever know what to do? The game seems totally unintuitive.

  • It`s an pure Try & Error game.

  • @DerSchmu yep programmers error there were many games of try & error hate

  • @Horganic they made these things called instruction booklets.

  • I've loved the final music. Sfx, instead, made me very anxious.

  • The fire levels (2:00) definitely inspired that new Alone In The Dark game, which isn't a bad things ofcourse.

  • I know home consoles back then weren't as good as the arcade but in my opinion this isn't Dragon's Lair.

  • Why did this guy get thumbed down for having an opinion?

  • this game made no sense NO SENSE ATALL!! well nothing did at 5 years old i remeber watching my dad playing it id be really confused!

  • Hahahaha awsome!

  • I remember playing this so baked.....

  • nice job

  • This guy makes the dragons lair look really easy i remember this game being so hard to get of the disk.

  • I think I actually (after a great many attempts) finished this game in my youth. Then again, the feeling of triumph I'm associating with it may be related to getting past that god accursedly annoying wind tunnel sequence.

  • One of the weirdest and surrealistic game ever made... It strange how far can imagination can brings you. The authors ot this games were under acid when they created it for sure.

    Great job.

  • now that's some weird gameplay...

i remember the game being practically unplayable.

this must've been some really hard work, congratulations :-)

and thanks for showing me everything beyond the 2nd screen... ;-)

  • One of the most annoying games ever!

  • @lurkerrekrul

    Or not

  • AUESOME VIDEO!!!!!!! man, this brings back memories. I remembering ording this for the c-64 and it coming 1 YEAR later!!!

  • lol... you were lucky in the 2nd to the last part. I had a hard time trying to defeat the knight. XD

  • If you think this is hard, check the nes version.

  • wow... all the kids that throw HALO tantrums and smash controlers can see what i was smashing a controler over when i was i kid.

  • The graphics aren't bad for a 8 bit machine

  • Someone just watching this walkthrough without having played the game would have no idea how difficult this is. It has to be one of the most unforgiving games I've ever had.

Anyway, I'm glad I can finally dee all the levels now... thanks for posting it!

  • I can finally "See" all the levels, too. :-/

  • i remember it took ages to load the start screen where you see the castle through the woods, i loaded from tape and you could literally follow the screen being build pixel by pixel. It was also one of the most difficult c64 games so i never got to see the dragon, now more than 20 yrs later i finally did. Thanks for making up for my mistakes i owe you :-)

  • This game rocked so many socks. I didn't get to play the original arcade game until a while after owning the c64 version, but seriously.. this brings back so many great memories.

  • Oh could you save me? The key is locked! In a cave, a dragon keeps it around his neck! To slay the dragon use the magic sword!

  • man i hated this game. so frustrating for me, especially with the crappy joystick i had for my c64

  • You know the original 64 joystick really was horrible, so we took our Odyssey 2 joysticks apart, and wired them into the 64, and this game rocked with them. (Every time the joystick broke, just bought another used Odyssey 2.)

  • hah, nice

  • I like the music.

  • dude compare this version to the NES one. Commodore surely wins

  • all i can remember from this game is a boat level which i never made it past heheheh

  • that's in Dragon's Lair 2

  • what a classic game this was wow.if u guys wanna play dragon lair the better verison try blu-ray or hd dragons lair

  • ya know, this game does not look too bad.

  • man does this bring back memorys i used to play this game alot after i got home after school and i always played to i got to the dragon and then i would either die or win

  • I spent a lot time trying to clear that level with the "Giddy Goons," so I had to give up. It's nice to finally see the ending, even if it is twenty years later. Thanks for posting this.

  • ditto! 20 years ago man.... when I was so young and carefree

  • looks good, butt the nes vrsion sucks grizzly 69'er

  • cool! thanks man. I would to hear the running tunnel music if you ever get a chance to capture that scene. I still remember the song - i was mesmerized by it because it sounded like my c64 was singing "la la la" (voice reproduction).

  • damn i could never get past that damn hallway with the skulls and boney hands

  • It was a good game

  • memories damn man

  • This brought me back! I saw the dragon once, and got killed because of my crappy one button controller. And that was a feat to get that far with that thing. Ahh the good old days of gaming when pure memory and trial and error was the only way to beat a game.

  • Hey, wait a minute... this looks just like the version that came out for the Coleco ADAM Computer??!! So, I guess the question of the day is... who programmed this game??? And was it originally programmed for the ADAM computer or for the Commodore-64?? I think it came out for the ADAM first!! Anyone know for sure???

  • why the fuck was the c64 ever replaced by a newer

entertainment system? even silent hill 2 would have worked with these graphics!

  • I still have this and the sequal on my commodore 64, such a cool game.

  • Wow.....so bad.....amazing the games that were considered good like 15 years ago..

  • Try more like 20-25 years.

  • Even then I would have called this a crappy translation of the orig game. because it is.

  • it was one of my favourite games. Thanks for the video.

  • The person who plays this game is poor

  • Do you have to respond quickly, or is it a platformer?

  • Thanks. Never went through the second round.

  • this game looks boring

  • But you have to remember, this was back in the early days of PC gaming... long before they had surround sound and 3d graphics. Back then, believe it or not children of the digital age, this was considered to be state of the art. But with kids today growing up with DVD games and 3d graphics, I wouldn't expect you to understand.

  • your right back then it was cutting edge. I can recall Atari and Colecovision compared to what we have now. Amazing how time changes things

  • Well this version is definately better than the NES version and considerably easier than both NES and Arcade versions.

  • This looks easier but not better than the arcade.

  • This game was absolutely rage-inspiring, but fun once you finally figured out what the hell you were doing. These C64 longplay vids are great stuff, bringing back a lot of old memories.

Now, to find some old RPG longplays...(Questron 1 and 2, Legacy of the Ancients, the Ultimas)

  • looks cool.

  • the worst things is the music, is the same always as one passes from one scene to the next, awful

  • it looks more playable than the arcade!

  • this game was soooo damn hard and fustrating...thank you very much for the memories though. the sequel was even better!Much better tunes graphics and i think it was a little more playable too.

  • lol thank you thank you thank you. I loved that game babahawhahahha :(:(:(

  • Ahhh I remember running this game in college spent many a day with my C64 trying to get to the last level. I hear that they are making a version for the PS3.

  • champion!

  • five,six,ten stars!!

  • That music at 8:50 brings back memories!

  • awesome!!

  • Thank you, I was never able to pass the Dragon!!!

  • wow,,ty,,,such a hard game to beat..great in arcade game.

  • Wow!

The C64 version looks just like the Don Bluth inspired masterpiece doing the rounds of the 80s arcade parlours at the time!

I had a copied version so the game didn't work beyond the first frame featuring the falling floor!

Thanks very much for the memories!

  • Thank you for posting this!

  • this is too much!! I salute you my friend for bringing back my memories of C64...for mastering so many C64 games...but NOT for reminding me that I am getting MUCH older and LONG for the days of old ;) Great VIDS!!!

  • Holy shit I had this game as a kid and forgot all about it. I was obsessed with Dragon's Lair and this was like the only home version available at the time.

  • Princess daphne actually looks bigger dirk.

  • We used to always joke about this being the worst game ever....think its cause I was shit at it lol

  • This was the first Dragon's Lair I played, and I could never get past the second screen, up, down, button, what? Could never figure it out, and haven't tried it again in years!

  • Awesome. I could never get past the chessboard man either, but you made it look so easy. It's funny how cheesy Dirk's Jumping animaition looks today.

  • Ha ha cheers for posting this brought back sooo many great memorys...and i finaly get to see what the last level looked like...nice one!!

  • WOW!Under 10 minutes!

    Nice job!

  • The next screen was just Dirk standing there and the music from the 3rd level was playing. And that was it...couldn't get out of the game or anything. Thanks for posting this.

  • This video brought back memories. I downloaded an illegal copy of this from a BBS and somewhere during the download, it crashed, so I only downloaded like a 1/4 of the game and talk about screwed up. The falling platform, the cloud would appear about 20 times before you could jump off. At times you could literally run on the air. When you jumped off the platform...you had to press up, right, up, right, up right, up, right to make it into the tunnel without falling off

  • I spent I countless hours trying to get past that garbled stuff (bushes?) on the Singe level. I could never get past it, thanks for showing it was possible.

  • :) Loved this game.... I dont think i ever passed the chessboard stage so i never saw got to see the ending.. Thanks for posting... after like, over 20 years i finally get to see it... Great work!

  • WOW! I loved this game as a kid and still do!

What you did here is not easy! Good Job!
