@GGbreizh very true. he very often uses celesta (like in Imperial march), but this song is the first time that he makes the celesta a leading instrument
@fightcobra Not true. This theme and the opening title for Home Alone are almost identical. It is obvious that Williams recycled a lot of that material for Harry Potter. But composers often self-borrow, and why wouldn't he? It's much easier to write something "new" by rearranging old ideas than to come up with something completely new altogether!
My exact thought...u wouldn't believe how much this one man has done! i was like that with indiana jones, then star wars, then ET, Hook, Home Alone....ridiculous stuff! hugely talented man...i'm surprised not a lot of people learn from him which is what i'm doing =)
@c3po402 then what's the point of winning awards for music if all he does it conducts them. they should rename the acadamy awards best original score for the acadamy awards best original score performed by conductor. i'm pretty sure when a film credits it's soundtrack to j.w. it means he composed AND conducted them.
@mitipau95, but it's called celesta over here too.....non so di cosa gli altri stanno parlando ;D io vò comprare una celesta un giorno...l'amo molto =)
John Williams often use the celesta (Star Wars, concertos...) But the celesta is playing with orchestra that's why we don't hear it clearly.

John Williams explained in a video that it was a celeste. It's here on Youtube, I don't know where, though.

I think its vibraphones..
resi45 2 years ago
No vibraphones, it's a celeste. I don't think there's any pitched percussion used in the score.
