  • What a song. Magic the guy is just magic!

  • bruce will always be the boss nuff said !! the man is a modern day working class hero !! and no im not american but i know genius when i hear it from the born to run and welcome to astbury park new jersey your hometown bruce to today you are a true poet !!

  • Springsteen with his voice inflections and sheer passion transform a great song into something amazing. Roy Bittan on the piano is something to behold. This is hands down the greatest version of this song i have ever heard.

  • just another anthem on an album of anthems that make you listen twice and say wo..... aiint this shit true.

  • Simply the BOSS! :)

  • simply the Boss! :)

  • So, I've been going through a whole load of Darkness stuff - the documentary, the album, the notes, everything about it.

This should could/should have been on it - would have fit in with the theme.

  • Brussseeeeeeee ti amo!!

  • 1 - Brilliant Disguise

    2 - Atlantic City

    3 - Blood Brothers

    4 - Downbound Train

    5 - Pink Cadillac

my top 5 favourite songs of the boss !

  • @bpo87 you're a dick

  • She just said "Joe, I've got some blow. We did it once and i just bought some mo'."

  • FUCK !! Holy shit ! I was here !!!

  • this song sounds like a man who is delusionally trying to recapture his old relationship, even bringing him to break into a house that is no longer his. Truly saddened, he then decides to begin work on railroads so he can afford to do rails.

  • Feel like I need more of this in my life. It's real!! Not like manufactucterered shit. Bout a guy singinging bout somethngreally raw to him, could probs make hi cry like a wean.

  • bruce est le meilleur chanteur du monde et cette chanson me rapelle une trop belle époque

    tu es le meilleur

  • bruce est le meilleur chanteur du monde et cette chanson me rapelle une trop belle époque

  • Lotsof right wing hypocrites on here, who can't stand the fact that a liberal like Bruce has money. The fact that he owns millions now has nothing to do with what he sings about. He is singing about real people and real emotions, and not necessarily from first hand experience either. The Boss is the real deal - listen to the blood, sweat and tears in the music. He is no fake.

  • The Boss is just a badass American.

  • Great keyboarding after 3:00 into the song. Thanks for posting this.

  • democrat , republican, labour , tory or liberal , ruled by facists whom control their every move , these facists are called banks .

  • dude this sounds like the 30s bruv innit . Any of uncle sam do tea parties any more? Not the english time , the enemy is within , its the fed.

  • It's stuff like this that made him the "boss"

  • @rockabilly306 you are a fuck

  • put on my jacket, and ran thru the woods...

  • Does anyone know where I can get a recording of this version without the video?

  • Fuck! What a great song!

  • Bruce goes on and on - No one will ever be this good for sure. It has always worked for him and he has stayed true to himself. Very modest lifestyle compared to the money he must have - raised his own family in NJ.

  • @Deneised

well said. that´s it, stay true to yourself in your whole life.

  • Like Atlantic City this is a dark song, about a desperate man caught up in a downward spiral.

In Atlantic city he does a hit and leave town, in this song he has a breakdown and ends up in jail...

These sort of stories are high fiction and very few are able to translate such strong emotions and narrative to a song, Bruce does and its quite incredible..

  • @robertdreed

    I agree

  • @robertdreed

yesssss. it will forever get me, like many many others, how he finds and puts the perfect words and thoughts together, creating unbelievable catching stories, that rush trough the whole body and life and sty there.

    !!

  • This is awesome. Such an underrated song, one of my favorites from BIT USA. Ignore trolls like MAYPOHEAD, anyone who can't enjoy good music because of (misguided) animosity towards the artist is a loser.

    Rock on Boss.

  • The BOSS is absolutely the best on Earth!

  • Under rated, and rarely performed, but quite wonderful

  • I am crying

  • Awesome. I was there!!!!

  • your very lucky, i saw Springsteen in june, it was an immense concet, but i would have loved to have been at this concert, unfortunatly im only 16 lol

  • This performance rocks.

  • Kudos to Bruce for writing such a sad, eerie, yet beautiful song. It's waaaay underrated.

  • Vintage bossman.

  • its such an underated brucie song, going to see him this sat and sun in dublin, hope he plays it.

  • my favourite boss song.

  • A true masterpiece!! Bruce is the BEST!!

  • Oh I love this sooo much.

  • gorgeous...reminds me of being 15 with the world at my feet.

  • aint that the truth......your youth goes in what seems an instance

  • @sera97 when you were 15, you had already had a house with one of your lovers?

  • @bpo87

    yes

  • @bpo87

    yes.

and we used to listen to this all the time.

  • brilliant song

and he can sing about whatever the hell he wants! hes written some AMAZING songs and the emotion in his performances is beautiful, these are whats important in an artist

  • I LOVE THIS.

  • @krock910 I LOVE PISS

  • I guess most of his fans wouldn't be able to relate to that kind of stuff. why change a winning formular if it's enabled you to afford "massive mansions, 5 star resorts and the most expensive of everything"

I'm sure people who like to hear artists sining about this sort of thing generally gravitate to hip hop artists who rap about there latest purchases.

Obviously both formulas have work but I'd think it's a bit late in the game for such a radical change from Springsteen.

  • @mrchappelow3 no offense but I bet Bruce spells and we all know he writes better than you do and you OBVIOUSLY do not know his music or a thing about him or his music or you would know how outragous you sound with this comment - don't listen to him if you don't like him. Bruce can change any song he has done previously and it will still sound good. Always.

  • @Deneised the bits in quotes were what they person before me wrote, my spelling may be bad but I am a huge bruce fan

  • @Deneised I am so sorry - sometimes cannot see all the comments before me and as you can see - I defend Bruce always - I can see you are a huge fan also - thanks for letting me know and God Bless you also always - BTW - Hyde Park is absolutely wonderful too - just came out - a couple on here Jungleland is awesome from that concert - but then again, All of Bruce's concerts are awesome huh? Peace.

  • I'm sure springsteen had family and friends whom he saw struggle in life and work. Your assuming that he is writting always from personal experience which doesn't need to be the case at all.

  • First of all, if you hate him so much, stop wasting your time and go comment on how much you love the Jonas Brothers videos.

Second, for your information he lives on a very modest property compared to other celebrities, always preferring to keep under the radar. He lived in a cruddy little house during Born to Run, and during Nebraska it was a little apartment. Hes never sold out or given into the rich life. Do a little research dumbass.

  • Wow for someone you don't like you sure wasted alot of time researching him. Why can't you just either enjoy the music for it's true value, entertainment, or move on to Lil' Wayne or something!

  • You're a freaking idiot, MAYPOHEAD. You can't even spell "writing" right!

  • @MAYPOHEAD

He has never claimed to have ever held a job other than song writer. as he's said. "writing songs and playing with a band is the greatest job in the world".

If it's the content of his songs that put you off, don't listen. Just don't lie or make stuff up.

  • song writing like this isn't a "gimmick".

  • @OlymPigs2010, I am hearing some jealousy here. Bruce started out as a poor songwriter from Jersey until Columbia Records spotted him in 1971. They saw something in him that they didn't see in anybody else.

And those mansions you were talking about. Well, he got those expensive things from decades of writing songs that people could relate to and wanted to hear.

Say what you want about the Boss. He was never fake, that much is true.

  • @OlymPigs2010 he's not trying to tell us how he feels, he's telling us how we feel.

  • @OlymPigs2010 First of all he wasn't always famous. He grew up in a Working Class family. And no one wants 2 sing about that. And he duznt really care about the money and the fame. If he did he wouldnt have made the following albums: Greetings from Asbury Park, The Wild Innocent and the Estreet Shuffle, Darkness on the edge of town, Nebraska, Tunnel Of Love, Lucky Town, Human Touch,Ghost of Tom Joad, Devils and Dust, or We Shall Overcome.

  • @OlymPigs2010 Exactly! Because Roger Waters had worms in his brain during The Wall album, right?

  • This man is such a great musician, singer and songwriter!! He's unique!! And also sexy ;)

  • He appeals to the common man, the working class. That's why he reaches so many. Why sing about rich people? How many can relate to that?

  • fuck you OlymPigs2010. maybe he was raised poor you jackass! and he sings about true stuff not just sex and drugs fucker!

  • You have no idea......I saw the guy live around about 70,71....broke and not real good .....this guy is about blood, sweat tears and hard work

  • You, Sir...are completely full of shit!

  • before you make a dumbass remark you should do some research rather than flapping off at the gums

  • And only if you have suffered you can sing about it? Same goes for actors too? You can only play a part only if you suffered enough drama? Olympigs, what a bunch of crap!

  • olympigs he is from a working class background whose had to work damn hard to get where he is in a very tough business. A man who can write play and perform to the standard he does deserves to be paid well.

like dynastychick says research his background.

  • Research his background.

  • So by 'Bruce's Fabulous,Wealthy,Super Stardom' you suggest that he is somehow immune to basic human emotions?! ..and like

dynastychick3 correctly states in relation to certain contexts of the song.. 'Research his background' then post something more informed.

  • His father was a bus driver and his mother a secretary so he was not brought up rich. He made who he has become, so deserves the credit due to him.

  • Are you musically illiterate? FYI: Bruce grew up in a middle class environment and was notborn with a siver spoon, as you suggest. Bruce is self made, and deserving of what he worked for, his raw emotion is reflected in his storybook style, you definitely know nothing about this artist and until you research properly you should keep your negative comments sparse, as you make a fool of yourself to true Bruce fans who know his background.

  • @OlymPigs2010 do research you cheese dick

  • ...einer der besten,die wir erleben...danke+weiter so...

  • Definatly one of his saddest songs

  • so true, it is really depressing, but still it is a fantastic song.

  • try highway patrolman (my name is joe roberts i work for the state ECT) a very sad song/ also a movie with this song called indian runner. my opinion this is his best song ever.

  • One song, one history, all the needed to make a movie about the lyics... fantastic music, great interpretation...

    something more?

  • I had something goin mister in this world...

    Wow, sigh, gotta love it.

  • god this song is so depressing. But i fucking love bruce

  • He was depressed when he wrote it.

  • omg we are revisiting the down bound train, thank you ronnie, goerge 1 and 2 and bill. Then there is margaret hilda, john, tony and gordon. Each and every one deserves a big pat on the pat when it comes to selling of uk and usa , its now uksa any buyers its going cheap. FUCK YOU BANKERS.

  • we had it once, we ain't got it anymore...

  • She packed her bags left me behind

She bought a ticket on the Central Line

Nights as I sleep I hear that whistle whine...

  • I feel a kiss in the misty rain

  • Joe I gotta go...

  • she packed her bags, left me behind

  • And I dropped to my knees, hung my head and cried...

  • Now I work down at the carwash...

  • I got laid off down at the lumberyard

  • I had something going mister in this world...

  • I had a job

    I had a girl

    ............

  • love it. i would have given anything to be at this concert! x

  • Saw him in cardiff on saturday! didnt do this song but he did so many other greats!

    BRUCEY

  • So beautiful... This song cuts my soul and I don't think i'm the only one.

    See you on Ullevi, Bruce.

  • your not the only one...=)

  • RIP Danny. Missed you in London.

  • She just said "Joe I gotta go

We had it once we ain't got it any more"

She packed her bags left me behind

She bought a ticket on the Central Line

Nights as I sleep, I hear that whistle whining

I feel her kiss in the misty rain

And I feel like I'm a rider on a downbound train

Last night I heard your voice

You were crying, crying, you were so alone

  • I had a job, I had a girl

I had something going mister in this world

I got laid off down at the lumber yard

Our love went bad, times got hard

Now I work down at the carwash

Where all it ever does is rain

Don't you feel like you're a rider on a downbound train

  • She just said "Joe I gotta go

We had it once we ain't got it any more"

She packed her bags left me behind

She bought a ticket on the Central Line

Nights as I sleep, I hear that whistle whining

I feel her kiss in the misty rain

And I feel like I'm a rider on a downbound train

Last night I heard your voice

You were crying, crying, you were so alone

  • You said your love had never died

You were waiting for me at home

Put on my jacket, I ran through the woods

I ran till I thought my chest would explode

There in the clearing, beyond the highway

In the moonlight, our wedding house shone

I rushed through the yard, I burst through the front door

  • My head pounding hard, up the stairs I climbed

The room was dark, our bed was empty

Then I heard that long whistle whine

And I dropped to my knees, hung my head and cried

Now I swing a sledge hammer on a railroad gang

Knocking down them cross ties, working in the rain

Now don't it feel like you're a rider on a downbound train

  • RIP DANNY

  • the voice of LIBERAL america (and intelligent america, too)

  • Excellent. Bruce rules!!

  • If you listen to the studio version, and then this, you realise he should realise more live albums :D

  • Great song!

  • bruce is a sexy devil. he got laid off at the lumber yard. she bought a ticket on the central line.

  • My favorite Boss' song. I was at this concert in the parc de La Courneuve (not in Paris but in a suburbs). The opening with "Born in the USA" is what I felt closer from an earthquake. I wonder if the peoples near the speakers have recovered their ears.

Great memories, TY for posting it.

  • I have been listening to him since i was 3 years old, his music never gets old!

  • The lyrics are just fantastic... Awsome Song! The Boss Rocks!!!

  • One of his most haunting songs, one of my faves.

  • Bruce & Elvis are simply the 2 greatest ENTERTAINERS EVER!!! Look how physically fit Bruce is here!!!

Elvis was similar in 1968-70... Both are legends...

Bruce is still with us... That is great!!!

  • he's not gonna die soon if that's what you mean. i love his work. so awsome. i have his new album. great songs. he made a song to remember his partner in work, Terry. died after 23 years of working with Bruce. that's so sad.

  • Bruce is one of a kind. Can picture the song in my mind ...great lyrics.

  • One of the best songs and performances I've ever seen from Springsteen.

  • Great music!!!

  • This takes me back to 1984 and riding in my new Mustang G.T.

The first cassette I bought was Bruce Springsteent to play.

    I became a fan instantly!

  • god so beautiful !!!

  • lately we are all riding the downbound train..we had it once it aint got it anymore

  • If you mean the USA that is so true. In retrospect we made our way on the backs of others and now the chicken have come home to roost.

  • beautiful

  • This is my #1 song from Bruce Springsteen, hands down.

  • I'm with you 100% It's brilliant.

  • i started to learn playing guitar along this song,, wen the one that was theacher, friend killed im self............never could play or end this song....i tried to liscen to it ,whit out crying...I THINK U (BAND) ARE THE BEST..........

  • This may not be one of his "signature songs", but when I first heard Born in The USA..I fell in love with this tune right off the bat!

It is just a damn good song, one of those rare gems he should pull out in his current 2007 tour (Philly 2003 and pulling out "Trapped"..THAT was a shocker!)

  • this is the song that got me into bruce.. downbound train, backstreets and racing in the street are so underrated, but are all so good.

  • One of my favourite Bruce songs....haunting is a good description and just love it.

  • I completely agree.. haunting, but still so, so, so good

  • Song is a good take on the 70's-80's (and today) in the rust belt. Damn NAFTA, damn Bill Clinton, damn corporate America.

  • I guess he received the rag after all, seems like only yesterday. Where are you now Peter ?

  • After Newcastle, i drove from Boro thro' the night to Paris. My late wife was nearly full term with my youngest boy, who is now 22yo and when she woke that saturday, she thought i'd gone shopping til i phoned from the eiffel twr. Met a dutch boy on my way to this gig who wrote his own fanzine and told me he managed to hand a copy to bruces' security the day before. He wasn't sure if he received it until this song was about to be sung and the boss announced "this song is for peter"

  • This and I'm on Fire really, really help put 'Born in the USA' into the stratosphere of 80's music, if that makes any sense.

  • No, it makes perfect sense. I agree. This was the best tour of all time. Nothing else has compared. Bruce has never been the same since.

  • lyrics are simply great!

  • I like the lyrics of this song. It's so great it from the best singer in the world, his name is Bruce Springsteen, Really THE BOSS!!!! I have this concert on DVD. Everything of that concert is GREAT. Especialy Out In The Street.

  • Downbound train is a true masterpiece of Bruce's "haunting era", never heard it live. Thanks again so much Bruce & Mr. C3!

  • Great keyboard player

  • Simplemente una de las mejores canciones que se hayan compuesto jamás.

  • This song has very good lyrics, Brilliant!!! Great performance though!!!

  • I was in La Courneuve that night, I never betrayed Bruce since then.

The true American Hero, seen from the eyes of a humble frenchie.

  • My favorite song - and I was there in Parc de La Courneuve with my lovely girlfriend Cathy Lee filled with love and cheap redwine!

  • this is one of his best. simply brilliant. its got everything good music has to offer

  • great song...rarely played live also

  • no wonder they call him the boss

  • cool

  • This brings back lots of memories-- It's a sweet, sad, soulful song pack with passion and loss.

  • happiness, joyfulness, sadness, anger, dispair, hope, love, etc.,......you name the emotion, and Bruce has tapped into it in one song or another. Downbound Train is just another classic which pulls at your heart strings. Just awesome. The lyrics give the listener amazing visuals. Thats the brilliance of Bruce.

  • It's definitely one of Springsteen's saddest songs.

  • and one of his best.

  • Great stuff.

  • wow I love this one

  • This song makes me almost cry everytime I hear it

  • makes me cry too, brilliant
