I know three different people who have taken a class with this guy and said they learned more in 8 weeks with him then they did in 2 years of film school. Pretty amazing.
In my Senior Comp Class, we have to write a movie script for a scene of a made up story. The scene should be "tension and dialogue hevay" and should spand 10-15 pages. Can anyone enlighten my mind to any ideas that would help me get started. Thanks
This guy is about the one out there teaching screenwriting who is still currently working as a studio hired screenwriter. Absolutely the best screenwriting teacher I've ever had.
My agent made me take Corey's seminar when it was in NY and it blew me away. I learned more in 2 days then in all of film school. Instead of teaching all the usual rules and formulas, Corey actually taught professional tools and processes. I can't recommend it highly enough.
a lot of people want to be rich right? but 99% of the people in the world don't have what it takes to become rich, same concept but with screenwriting,

Its physically impossible for everyone to become rich. When everyone is rich no ones rich. Everyone has the same amount of money and costs will be changed proportionally to the amount of money people have.
As one of the person who could easily become a "forever wannabe" writer, this is definitely the most important video I have watched. Not only did it give sound advice, but it made me want to write more. It is only through failure that we can achieve a semblance of perfection.
Marsen, talent isn't something you're born with. It's something you develop with hard work and dedicated practice. Believing anything else is simply just giving yourself an excuse. Every professional writer I know started out writing truly terrible stuff, they just did what was required to develop and master the necessary skill sets. You might want to check out Carol Dweck's book, Mindset. It's the only book I make all my students read. For many of them, it's a game changer.
@coreymandell You should add a second book. The War of Art. I agree, the skillsets are critical. And I'm sure its why most fail when they actually write--but, I think most fail at screenwriting because they don't write. That book is all about why. Give it to your students, it's life changing.
@coreymandell Over idealistic views like this are no help to the delusional. People can definately improve drastically but to argue that everyone has the ability to write a good movie is blatantly wrong. Everything that this man said is true. "Every professional write I know started out writing truly terrible stuff" - Seriously? I am, I believe, a decent writer.Nothing special but I would have been one of the top in my small class.I have to accept that I will not write a good film.
@coreymandell Thank you Mr. Mandell for this interesting viewpoint. This makes so much sense, both your video and your reply to Marsen. I am a professional musician working and living in NYC and in a city of literally hundreds of thousands of performers, only a small percentage is actually making their living from music, its easy to see the parallels of how i can learn from your wisdom. Thank you!
@coreymandell I can honestly say that before I wrote well, I wrote terrible. It wasn't a lack of creativity, talent, or even drive. I just needed to find the wrong way to discover the right way.
OK, but since only the best of the best ever break into this business, really, only the truly talented folks will ever make it. Sure, someone not "born with it" can become good, but it´s never enough. That´s the brutal truth.

I'd say you can become competant and successful by being technically good, you can become a legend by having both this and true inspiration.

Only 1 or 2 keepers out of every class, eh?
Not surprising. SAD, but not surprising.

I have gotten 4 Hugos and I can tell you that their is no quick fixes to becoming a great writer. You have to train yourself like a Doctor.
