The greatest rock band that ever lived, bar none. Until The Who, everything was leaden blues work-outs. Pete Townshend got Charlie Parker, Mose Allison and everything else thereafter. Forget Zep, the Beatles, the Stones.....this band invented rock. And in Keith Moon, the ultimate rock drummer....he improvises like a jazz musician and plays like a Man United fan on the rampage in another town. This is how rock SHOULD like. An air-raid on the senses,
pretty loose playing. John is the only one who's not having any of it, the ox is holding the playing together.. Keith might be having a bad case of sobriety, but he still gets some incomparable whacks in. had to be nearly an athlete to play in this band. nice to see more of the show.
This is the 74' Charlton gig, one of two at the same venue that year, (the other show it rained solidly throughout), where they were recorded as the loudest rock n roll band in the world....... just for the record Pete later remarked in an interview that he 'couldn't remember either show as unfortunately I was very pissed!'
Don't know if it's the sound or what, but this isn't one of their better shows. Keith is all over the place and Roger surprisingly isn't in great form. the only who is is John. That's probably why it was never released as a full show - let alone blue-ray.
Bands likes Zeppelin, Floyd, Doors, Hendrix give you chills? Are you physically attracted to music? I AM!

I mean NO disrespect to Kenny Jones because he was a great drummer in his own right, but The Who should have NEVER went on without Keith Moon!!! These four were without a doubt the greatest combination ever in rock history and after Moonies' death it was never the same. He died way too young! I watch these old classic concerts for hours on youtube. The were THE GREATEST!!!
@don62snodgrass Oh, for Christ's sake! Did it ever dawn on you that they might have continued as a band because they had to make a fucking living? It's called earning money so you can raise and give your kids the best life possible. If a member of a band you were in died, would you have quit and threw millions of dollars of future earnings down the drain? They were in their mid-thirties when he died. They couldn't afford to break-up, you ninny. Zeppelin could afford to break up, The Who couldn't
As a bass player, let me say that John rerwrote the instrument...and in the best wy possible. John and Keith made the bass and drums lead lines in rock and roll singlehandedly...
@mothernaturecockbloc hmm. I`m not. I love the violin solo. And the extra reason the violin was Keith's idea, what is meaninful for me. Besides, the harmonica live versions are enough, at least for me.
@fontanalu Oh don't get me wrong, I love the violin solo as well. But it's like every time Roger picks up a harmonica a tune gets 5x more rockin'. Haha.
The full set list for the night (5/8/74) for those who are curious: 1)ICE 2)Summertime Blues 3)Young Man Blues 4)BOR 5)BBE 6)Substitute 8)I'm A Boy 9)Tattoo 10)Boris 11)Drowned 12)Bell Boy 13)Dr. Jimmy 14)WGFA 15)PW 16)See Me Feel Me 17)5.15 18)Magic Bus 19)MG 20)Naked Eye 21)Let's See Action 22)MG Blues
The best performing Naked Eye of the all history The Who ( sorry for my English ), I'm from Poland ! Poland Love The Who :) but I love voice Pete :) He is the best guitarist in the world :)
Oooh, Roger is pissed at 27:20 - During the song, his mic has some kind of malfunction and Pete goes over and tells him to use his (Pete's) mic, so he grabs Pete's mic on the stand and then SLAMS his lead mic to the floor - TASTY!!!!
Wow. You can cut the tension with a knife between Roger and Pete during See me feel me and Magic Bus....but it appears they made up during My Generation.
@CanaKahuna --In See Me, don't think it was tension so much as Roger's mic malfunction. He was pissed as any good rock star should be with malfunctioning equipment on this stratospheric level. The crew shoulda gotten him that replacement as soon as he signaled. (He kept looking back, asking for aid, and it came in the form of Pete telling him to use his mic instead.)
There seems to be a big power struggle being played out between Pete and Roger during Magic Bus! At 32:00, Roger appears to step on Pete's lick a bit as he starts verse 2. At 32:11, Pete gives Roger a look as if to say, "Don't do that again, you wanker!". At 32:34, Roger does it again, and Pete is obviously frustrated, as he momentarily drops his hand from the fretboard. There is some real anger in Pete's voice, as he shouts "You can't have it!!" a little later.
@smautomat I disagree with you. For me it looks (clearly) that at 32:00 and at 32:11 Roger is having some sound problems and at 32:34, Pete tried to do a guitar line but Roger began the verse before he continued (By the way, Pete failed to complete on the right musical time and "wanted another chance" and Roger decided to continue playing on the right way).
Can't believe it now but I was there. One of the first of many gigs I went to during my youth and feels like yesterday. Were they the best rock band of all time?
I believe it's because mstrsail is a Director (see the channel). I've noticed Directors are the only ones with vids longer than 10 mins. Either way, thanks for the great concert vid, mstrsail!
