  • .. that song is so great .. just wondering .. why it was always suchlike few known : -S

  • Great tunes - great times

  • Yeah, yeah, the good old days.. when the stereos were shite and you could hardly afford a record anyway.I spent my first 6 months wages on a stereo which was considered great back then but which I laugh at these days (yes,it is still going strong at my mothers house, and she still thinks it's High-End)

  • @FFM0594 Good comment, I had a hi-fi in a teak effect cabinet with a smoked glass door, but I loved it, I thought it was the bee kneecaps 25 years ago.

  • I probably heard this song at least once but the song I heard at least 3 times on the radio was "Ten feet tall." I managed to get "Skylarking" after "Oranges and Lemons" which was the ultimate hook for me and then the following releases, and and managed to find a few that preceded skylarking.

  • I always thought this was a natural match with "No Thugs in Our House". thinking its probably the same bloke.

  • "Nigel isn't outspoken but he likes to speak and loves to be spoken to..."

  • TURN

    IT

    UP

    XTC4EVR

  • good old days

  • I used to watch this band in the Red Cow in Hammersmith (now gone), that was during the punk era but XTC were not punks. I remember the keyboard player more than the others, they had a very different sound to anybody else, those were the days. I saw a good band last night in a church, they are called Active Child, they are quite churchy and the singer is a man soprano, check them out.

  • I thank my dad for raising me on this music. I'm completely addicted to this song. Again :D

  • @sydneyxerin Your Dad is a cool guy, never forget that.

  • Awwww thank you Love this song, what year is it?

  • @SuperJacqui9 1979

  • Mere boys back then but such sophistication and originality.

  • we need another new wave. i'm sick of these bearded middle class hippies strumming guitars.

  • 1979~ awsome...

  • this Nigel must be very proud man since we all think on him

  • hard to believe its a 1979 song feels like 83-84

with their senses working overtime, XTC was ahead of the curve.

  • my dad used to sing this song to his cat NIGEL love it :)

  • Awesome fucking band. Very underrated.

  • Love this song, and XTC. The band has two singers, yes? I think the guy who sings on "Dear God" and "Senses" is different from the one singing here? I've never seen what these guys look like til seeing these videos on Youtube, lol, though I've been listening and loved them since I heard "Ball and Chain" on "New Music" hour on WYSP (or WMMR maybe?) in Philly, circa 1982.

  • @juliawww Bassist Colin Moulding is singing in this song. Guitarist Andy Partridge is the singer of most of their tunes. Both write songs, but not together. Colin usually sings on the ones he writes, and Andy on the ones he writes. As the band grew more complex over the years (in terms of sound and lyrics), Andy really became the chief songwriter, leaving Colin with 2 - 4 songs per CD. I've been a collector of everything they've put out for years now.

  • 1:59 for nigel!

  • Still listning to this song....

  • nice^^

  • Who would have thought it, XTC lasted longer than British Steel.

  • En 30 ans ça n'a pas pris une ride: excellent, very well

  • Post-punk?, New-Wave?. Who cares, its rock and roll to me.

  • Probably haven't heard this since it was new!!!!!!!!!! PUNK or NEW WAVE?

Wich was nice.

  • i used to really like this song back in the day...the bass rocks. yep - classic early new wave

  • Swindon stand up!

  • Yo Colin, where can I buy a jacket like that ?

  • How heavy is this live version?! Love it.

  • @imran78 Its not live, actually. Top Of The Pops didn't let most artists play live. This is the album version, Its just a bit high in pitch and the drums are louder.

  • I went to to school with Colin at Headlands school Swindon. Good boy. Bravo bravo. Real talent!

  • love it :D

  • great new wave band,xtc,classic 79

  • One of the great, yet so underrated.

  • Love XTC, their sound reminds me of the Beatles sometimes, here's another band called Luce, nice track called "Buy a Dog" youtube.com/watch?v=2acYxdU-POw

  • yeah ...

  • ohh!! i was so young!!!

  • you've put the audio through a compressor and you don't know what you're doing.

  • the guitar tune remind me japanese gameboy background music

  • We were recording at the Townhouse in June 1980 and this lot were sitting next to us in the canteen - and all they talked about was - snooker!

  • i hear one guitar in this song. i see 2 guitar players.

why dont they get rid of the jackass who is making money of the efforts of the other 3?

  • @pbrick6301 There are two guitar parts but Dave's are barely audible here. Go to Amazon, Look for the transistor blast boxset and then listen to the preview of this song on Disc 2. Its a demo but Dave's guitar parts are easy to hear in that version.

  • @pbrick6301 em,that was 30 years ago.

  • There is still good music today, it's just nice to be reminded of how great XTC were as songwriters and even as a working band.

  • This song is so fucking amazing wtf.... ><

  • weird sounds like this vers is a key higher than the recorded track hehe...i like it!

  • His future is already made for him in British Steele? What if he wants to be a doctor or plumber? XD

  • @mtaylor848

    Son of a Thatcherite?

Nonetheless, a great piece of music and probably my favourite...

  • sounds fast , but better for it.

  • Fucking brilliant!! Love this song always!!!

  • Happy Birthday Andy !!

  • A group ahead of their times, XTC are one of the best britsh group of all time! A sort of Beatles meets new wave sound. Great!

  • They looked like Mods.

  • 100% god

  • They looked and sounded better then the Mod Revival bollocks.

  • my name is nigel!

  • This was X.T.C's 2nd of 12 U.K hit & 3rd biggest (believe it or not, I was surprised-thought it would be there biggest) chating at number 17 on 22nd-Sep-79 (yep, not a top 10!!!), Sargent Rock made number 16 (24th-Jan-81) & their biggest was the follow up to that Senses Working Overtime- number 10, 23rd-Jan-82. "We're only making Jam for trifles".

  • Classic Thanks Boys

  • Nigel is the son of the then chairman of British Steel hence the reference to BS in the song---apparently

  • tunnnnneeeee

  • these guys, the smiths, the libertines. which band is the coolest on top of the pops

  • @DYKEPALS

Easily the greatest TOTP performance was Nirvana doing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - their first ever UK tv performance and Kurt sings the song like he didn't give a crap - very very very funny.

  • I remenber them playing this song at pride park when Nigel Clough took charge of his first game for Derby. A top tune for a top bloke !!!!!!!!

  • I believe the English call this "miming"... they're still great but them not singing into the microphone makes it pretty obvious... thank god that shit Top of The Pops show is cancelled.

  • @TheRedScareIsAlive I had no idea it was cancelled until I read your comment. I then googled it to see when it was cancelled. 2006. While I'm here I might want to point out that Nirvana really mocked the show in 1992. ON THE SHOW.

  • who is nigel? lol

  • @dirty06maggot

    He´s a friend of XTC I think ;-)))

    Rainy.

  • one of the most creative bands!!!

  • Forgot how good this was. Thx for posting.

  • I'm happy in my world...

  • great audio quality

  • Todays bands just ain't as cool as this!!

  • primus kills this track

  • Bummer, lip syncing.

  • Dude, now I see where Sam Fogarino (drummer for Interpol) gets his fashion sense ;-)

  • For some reason I find that drums are really overlooked when writing songs, This is the only song I've heard where they really stand out for the whole song.

  • Simply Pure Class...

    Patrick (Ireland)

  • luv this band&video

  • SO GOOD.

  • Pure Class...

  • So fiking good xxcc

  • a dublin band called katmandu did a great version nigel, anyone know anything what happend this great band

  • PURE MAGIC XXCC

  • GREAT TRACK AND FOOTAGE!

  • me and my little sister are always singing this great song :)

  • woop, this is fucking sick!

  • I don't think I've ever seen XTC looking this sharp. I wish I had some suits like that.

  • Don't normally comment, just enjoy. This is an exception. XTC were one of the most underrated bands of all time. AP also provide one of the best quotes i ever heard.

"We formed a band for the money, the girls and the free beer after the gig....Well we got the free beer"

  • god ! i love xtc !!!! partridge is now working with LIGHTERTHIEF . see myspace for details !

  • andy wouldn't perform live for years on account of agoraphobia...great find!

  • This was my favorite song from them, I remember others were listening to that powder puff love crap and I was considered weird because I dug this.

  • @climbon74: I feel kinda like that, I don't keep on top of all my friends' music interests but I don't have any friends who really like The New Pornographers. I also get crap because of their name. Too bad most people don't listen with an open mind.

  • Great band, very underestimated..........

  • Very underrated band. Colin also wrote some brilliant music as well as Andy (like this one). And you can't beat Terry's heavy drumming and Dave's fantastic guitar work!

  • Keep coming here...amazing track about life!

  • XTC are so addictively amazing. I'm normally into metal, but these guys rock.

  • yea :) i pretty much only listen to hiphop, dnb and dubstep but this rocks! going to see if i can find their album today

  • AMAZING One of the best band of the history

  • that bassist looks ungodly cool in this video!

  • also see dukes of stratosphere

  • Nice one!

  • really cool song pitchshifter cover of this is awesome too

  • You know, This seems to be a different mix. The drums are a lot louder in this version. I like it, The drums in this song are so great!

  • this is the original single....

  • When's this song from?

  • 1979. It's in their third album, "Drums & Wires".

  • Awesome tune!!

  • Thank you.

  • Fucking brilliant sound,,,great band...kickin it!!

  • playback? great song though! :DD

  • Greattt song!!!

  • Why is it that XTC didn't sell loads of records while those talentless, posh, stuck-up, pretentious posers Duran Duran sold millions?

  • I think its because they stopped touring so early on in their career. That can kill a band real easy.

  • Further proof that the late 70s and early 80s was a wondeful time for pop music.

  • Real music! Not like todays fakes and wannabe's!!!

  • @JAYROX1969 Yes. I know what you mean too, Today's mainstream music stinks and some can barely be called music because it has no beat or anything. But there's some good bands out there if you look so don't just say all new music is bad... It isn't. (I had to say it)

  • @101Volts Point taken but they just don't make great bands like XTC anymore.

  • @JAYROX1969 Yeah, Good bands seem to be few and far from one another now. In the 60s or even the 70s and 80s you could find lots of good music in the mainstream, Now its pretty hard to come by. Even in the 90s it was getting tough to find good music...

  • @101Volts Thats the way i feel too, the 90s had its moments. I seem to recall XTC singing this on Crackerjack!

  • @JAYROX1969 Was Crackerjack a TV show?

  • @101Volts Yes, it ran for years on the BBC. It was a gameshow for kids and they always had groups and singers on.

  • @JAYROX1969

Oh yeah, because there weren't fakes and wannabees around when XTC were popular....

Real music is still out there, just go find it and ignore the shit they pump down our throat.

Why is it that on any old music video there's always a comment from people who think that good music died back last century? It's just laziness - we have the internet and there are some amazing bands out there. Just don't expect them to turn up as much on mainstream tv or radio these days.

  • @DeluxeReissue

    thank you for saying this

    i couldnt agree more

  • @DeluxeReissue Agreed mainstream stuff sucks monkey loin. The good stuff is still out there, a lot of good bands can be found on youtube if you look around. Once you've found the name of a band you like just Google 'em for more!

  • @DeluxeReissue But then again, anything that sounds good nowadays seems to be a copy of something back in the day so why bother eh! mate

  • @DeluxeReissue

Nope. not as much great music. american and Worldwide music innovation lost steam in the late eighties and is nearly at a standstill. There is more music being produced than ever, but nothing truly groundbreaking has come along in quite some time. The best lately is Tv on the radio.

  • @DeluxeReissue You spoke my mind just then. I am a musician and strive for new wave / pop.

    This is where it is.

  • @DeluxeReissue Amen.

  • This is crazy...

    My dad is called Nigel

My grandad worked in the Scunthorpe steelworks (british steel)

    He was an only child

    Spooky Stuff!

  • @GameFreakKid lol!not really.Lots of nigel's in the UK and old steelworkers

  • @GameFreakKid but was he a retard who had no one to look after him?

  • @GameFreakKid You'd better start making plans for him then.

  • @GameFreakKid cool coincidence :)

  • qaulity tune

  • Qaulity speelling!

  • this was and IS a brilliant new wave pop song... superb bass tune, great drums, guitars (gang of four-like) AND vocals, simply XTC

  • This was the start of the era of straight, thin ties and drainpipe trousers, a reaction against the 70s flares and huge knot ties. This was the first era of my adolescence and heralded the start of the 80s. People of my age used to laugh at the 70s and people wearing flares.Late '79 marks the transition point where a new generation of kids became hip, (mods),

  • I concur entirely. I was born in 1970, even in junior school in the late 70's, kids despised flares aka 'Burmo's,' with a passion. Even at the tender age of 8 yrs, most of realised that 70's fashions were generally awful! lol

  • UKSazzy people were wearing skinny ties and sharp suits 15 years before that. This was the mod and ska revival of the 70s carrying on into the early 80s.

  • unicornsofnewyork - XTC produced an extremely fine body of work, finally calling it a day a couple of years ago.

If you're into intelligent, melodic pop, check out English Settlement, Skylarking, Nonsuch, Apple Venus and Wasp Star.

  • Whatever happened to this lot?

  • It's not (completely) live. The singer isn't near enough to the microphone.

  • It's not live at all. It's from ToTP for a start, that's the first indication. That and it sounds identical to the album version, just sped up slightly.

  • Pffff thought it was primus

  • Primus covered this song. I think both versions are dope. I mean, Les would not have done a cover if he didn't think the basswork was already dope. IMO anyway....

  • no hes really playing it...it sounds live but i dont know if it is hah...but the base line isnt just one strum per note...hes playing more than one strum per note, if you listen closely you can hear it

  • Why isn't Colin playing the bass guitar. i mean, he's holding a bass guitar, but he is strumming it completely out of time of the bass-line!

  • On this show, bands were forced to mime--they couldn't play live even if they wanted to. There were lots of times when bands intentionally made fun of this--PiL, the Stragglers and Flying Lizards off the top of my head.

  • Don't forget Nirvana in early 1992. They absolutely took the piss out of it and got away with it. Still, XTC were doing a pretty funny job of it in that other TOTP video they were in that was filmed for this very same song...

  • It sounds live, but Colin doesn't look like he's really playing

  • christ andy looks beautiful.

  • Definitely the best song from Andy Partridge a nd his band. Great.
