Yeah, yeah, the good old days.. when the stereos were shite and you could hardly afford a record anyway.I spent my first 6 months wages on a stereo which was considered great back then but which I laugh at these days (yes,it is still going strong at my mothers house, and she still thinks it's High-End)
@FFM0594 Good comment, I had a hi-fi in a teak effect cabinet with a smoked glass door, but I loved it, I thought it was the bee kneecaps 25 years ago.
I probably heard this song at least once but the song I heard at least 3 times on the radio was "Ten feet tall." I managed to get "Skylarking" after "Oranges and Lemons" which was the ultimate hook for me and then the following releases, and and managed to find a few that preceded skylarking.
I used to watch this band in the Red Cow in Hammersmith (now gone), that was during the punk era but XTC were not punks. I remember the keyboard player more than the others, they had a very different sound to anybody else, those were the days. I saw a good band last night in a church, they are called Active Child, they are quite churchy and the singer is a man soprano, check them out.
Love this song, and XTC. The band has two singers, yes? I think the guy who sings on "Dear God" and "Senses" is different from the one singing here? I've never seen what these guys look like til seeing these videos on Youtube, lol, though I've been listening and loved them since I heard "Ball and Chain" on "New Music" hour on WYSP (or WMMR maybe?) in Philly, circa 1982.
@juliawww Bassist Colin Moulding is singing in this song. Guitarist Andy Partridge is the singer of most of their tunes. Both write songs, but not together. Colin usually sings on the ones he writes, and Andy on the ones he writes. As the band grew more complex over the years (in terms of sound and lyrics), Andy really became the chief songwriter, leaving Colin with 2 - 4 songs per CD. I've been a collector of everything they've put out for years now.
Tämäkin bändi tuli tietoisuuteeni kun 1980 tuli nihvottua Valtsusta kasetti nimeltä Poprock Special. Siinä oli oli britti uutta-aaltoa ja punkia ja suomi punkia ynnä Skata. Wich was nice.
@imran78 Its not live, actually. Top Of The Pops didn't let most artists play live. This is the album version, Its just a bit high in pitch and the drums are louder.
Love XTC, their sound reminds me of the Beatles sometimes, here's another band called Luce, nice track called "Buy a Dog" youtube.com/watch?v=2acYxdU-POw
@pbrick6301 There are two guitar parts but Dave's are barely audible here. Go to Amazon, Look for the transistor blast boxset and then listen to the preview of this song on Disc 2. Its a demo but Dave's guitar parts are easy to hear in that version.
This was X.T.C's 2nd of 12 U.K hit & 3rd biggest (believe it or not, I was surprised-thought it would be there biggest) chating at number 17 on 22nd-Sep-79 (yep, not a top 10!!!), Sargent Rock made number 16 (24th-Jan-81) & their biggest was the follow up to that Senses Working Overtime- number 10, 23rd-Jan-82. "We're only making Jam for trifles".
Easily the greatest TOTP performance was Nirvana doing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - their first ever UK tv performance and Kurt sings the song like he didn't give a crap - very very very funny.
I believe the English call this "miming"... they're still great but them not singing into the microphone makes it pretty obvious... thank god that shit Top of The Pops show is cancelled.
@TheRedScareIsAlive I had no idea it was cancelled until I read your comment. I then googled it to see when it was cancelled. 2006. While I'm here I might want to point out that Nirvana really mocked the show in 1992. ON THE SHOW.
For some reason I find that drums are really overlooked when writing songs, This is the only song I've heard where they really stand out for the whole song.
Don't normally comment, just enjoy. This is an exception. XTC were one of the most underrated bands of all time. AP also provide one of the best quotes i ever heard.
"We formed a band for the money, the girls and the free beer after the gig....Well we got the free beer"
@climbon74: I feel kinda like that, I don't keep on top of all my friends' music interests but I don't have any friends who really like The New Pornographers. I also get crap because of their name. Too bad most people don't listen with an open mind.
Very underrated band. Colin also wrote some brilliant music as well as Andy (like this one). And you can't beat Terry's heavy drumming and Dave's fantastic guitar work!
@JAYROX1969 Yes. I know what you mean too, Today's mainstream music stinks and some can barely be called music because it has no beat or anything. But there's some good bands out there if you look so don't just say all new music is bad... It isn't. (I had to say it)
@JAYROX1969 Yeah, Good bands seem to be few and far from one another now. In the 60s or even the 70s and 80s you could find lots of good music in the mainstream, Now its pretty hard to come by. Even in the 90s it was getting tough to find good music...

Nope. not as much great music. american and Worldwide music innovation lost steam in the late eighties and is nearly at a standstill. There is more music being produced than ever, but nothing truly groundbreaking has come along in quite some time. The best lately is Tv on the radio.
This was the start of the era of straight, thin ties and drainpipe trousers, a reaction against the 70s flares and huge knot ties. This was the first era of my adolescence and heralded the start of the 80s. People of my age used to laugh at the 70s and people wearing flares.Late '79 marks the transition point where a new generation of kids became hip, (mods),
I concur entirely. I was born in 1970, even in junior school in the late 70's, kids despised flares aka 'Burmo's,' with a passion. Even at the tender age of 8 yrs, most of realised that 70's fashions were generally awful! lol
UKSazzy people were wearing skinny ties and sharp suits 15 years before that. This was the mod and ska revival of the 70s carrying on into the early 80s.

On this show, bands were forced to mime--they couldn't play live even if they wanted to. There were lots of times when bands intentionally made fun of this--PiL, the Stragglers and Flying Lizards off the top of my head.
Don't forget Nirvana in early 1992. They absolutely took the piss out of it and got away with it. Still, XTC were doing a pretty funny job of it in that other TOTP video they were in that was filmed for this very same song...
.. that song is so great .. just wondering .. why it was always suchlike few known : -S

It sounds live, but Colin doesn't look like he's really playing
