Very true, what you wrote in the description. In fact, Dr. Frankenstein has always been the true monster. The creature itself is really just another victim, only driven to violence by his creator.
Boris Karloff captured the dead eyes, stress, and frustration of the monster, creating the terrifying creature that we know now. Christopher Lee captured the pathetic existence and helplessness of the monster. Robert de Nero captured the true feelings of the monster. And Peter Boyle captured the humorous tap-dancing side of the creature.
I've seen loads of Frankenstein films, but this is one of my favs. Cushing and Lee do such a great job! Cushing's Baron was the ultimate evil genius--handsome, dapper, elegant, all belying the fact that he was so cruel and unfeeling. I also agree with the comment that the sequel was extremely touching, and maybe a better film. But this is the one that started it all! A great horror flick.
Cool Scene! Love the Hammer movies I've seen, just uploaded a TV Spot of Hammer Films which appeared on Encore Mystery Channel. Going to upload a Christopher Lee interview soon. Thanks for this clip!
i totally felt that way when watching it, that peter cushing's character was the evil one. and that the frankenstein monster is just a helpless creature
I totally agree. Hammer chose to focus on "the Baron" in their series, while Universal focused on "the monster" in theirs. This movie is great and it is closer in one sense to the novel. In the novel, we are torn between Frankenstein the scientist and "the creature" -- who is the real monster? Is it Frank for being so cold and indifferent, or is it the monster for taking revenge upon him?
Still a great film though. The only thing I don`t like about Hammer films is they are a little on the dry side because they focus way too much on character development.
Hammer had problems with Universal, and had to be sure to completely change the script and makeup or be sued. I agree, they could have used another approach on the face, especially considering how much Victor is concerned about the creature's delicate hands and potential artistry and intellect.
Thanks for this wisecracker - this is an underestimated Hammer flick and Christopher Lee looks and is superb as the monster. It made me kack my pants!
I agree this is very good, one of my favs. But try the sequel for a really moving performance by Michael Gwyn (my spelling is incorrect, I think) as the "new" monster. He does a great job.
Some of Lee's scenes in this are really heart breaking, especially when he is in chains with the half shaved head. It really drives home how cruel and unfeeling Baron Victor is!
I was eight years old when my father took me to see it. When the creature removes the bandage from his face, I went down in my seat and didn't come back up until the end. Needless to say, I didn't sleep that night and definitely did not sleep alone. This was the only movie I recall ever having this effect on me.
hahaha i was actually looking for this clip because the same thing happened to me when i saw this movie when i was around 8. Whe he removed the bandage i covered my face and don't remember anything after that so i probably didn't watch it!
@ronaldt491: Don't feel too bad, I saw this when I was 12 and it had the same effect on me. I couldn't sleep for days. That was about 9 yrs. ago so I'm good now. Lol.
long time since i saw this one, scared me to death as a kid. I think if i remember rightly this is the first ever horror movie where Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee teamed up. Thanx for posting the clip!

Even though he wasn't on screen for too long, Lee showed us that the monster was simply a confused newborn child, not a murderous abomination.

Good point. And yes the real fiend was the baron himself.
In the movie " Frankenstien must be destroyed" that was even more the case.
The real monster in this one was the mad scientist himself.

Couldn`t he found a better head for the creature? His head looks like it was floating in a lake for 2 months.

I would guess that if an eight year old saw the same scene on a wide screen tv of today, he might do the same thing that you and I did!!!!
