@Mandinko23 catholicism is not a bad religion, i don't think that is what that are triing t say. but at that time you have to understand how carupt the catholic church was. a prest could be bought. some evan had wives when thay promist to live a life of chasity. ...i mean the freaking HEAD OF THE ROMEN CHURCH just called somone a WHORE. and wants her dead. and it's not just the movie he realy did want here killed
@Mandinko23 That is true. People got burned a lot back then but it wasn't as common as people like to think. Catholics who tried heretics wanted them to legitimately confess they were wrong and then the priests would help them integrate back into society, kinda like rehab. The Spanish Inquisition were fanatics, the Spanish were very militant Catholics, and most Catholics didn't like the Spanish way of operating because of that fanaticism
@KDVx3 Well her in laws were her relatives lol. mary's mother katherine was the daughter of isabella and ferdinand. Mary and Philip were like second cousins or something ewwww >.<
@BlueRazor69 The number does not matter. What matters is that they were tried *at all* for thought crimes and executed for thought crimes. Oh, and pope Sixtus IV. officially sanctioned the "spanish fanatics" by issuing the bull "Exigit Sinceras Devotionis Affectus".
@Mandinko23 It may not be fair.. but religion itself is not "bad" it becomes bad when some ppl take it and change the words. ALOT Of ppl have been killed through time in the name of religion, catholicism, christianity and ALOT more.. all over the world
god the english have some crule ways of torcher i would hate to be in those days if u were accused of something u were torchered even if u didnt do it u should confess so u get an easy death it would kill to be torcherd like that ya know

OMG! I forgot what they called that kind of medieval torture. I think they discussed it in one episode of BONES or some kind of show that I watched. That was really horrible.
God they throw around the word "whore" so much in this movie. To my knowledge Elizabeth or Mary the Queen of Scotland never had sex for money, which is what a whore actually is
@BlueRazor69 in this part the word whore was in reference to her being the other woman to robert cuz he is married back then they considered those girls a whore
@nerdintheback "Whore" meant the same as it does today, ie "prostitute", hence the "Whore of Babylon" in the Book of Revelations. It's used here by Elizabeth's enemies to "legitimise" their plots against her, asserting that she had no morals and was unfit to rule.

But considering that she banished Robert's second wife from court when she learned of the marriage and reportedly despised the woman for no reason, I'd say there was some passion between them for life. ;-)
You're right, of course. But I just have to mention, that Elizabeth was already aware of his first marriage. She even attended it. This is just Hollywood making drama.

Dropsy is an old term for edema or pulmonary edema. The poisoning theory was played up then not only for gossip (natural causes is such a boring way to die) but also to make legitimate an attack.
At the risk of being shot down in flames - can anyone please explain to me, what on earth went on with Mary D Guise ? I have always noticed that she closed her eyes when that chap hugged her, and I dont think Lizzies fella killed her, dont recall history reporting that one - I get that he bedded her - followed it up to tht point, but is she dead - or just in shock at being used - maybe abused by Elizabeths right hand man - she closed her eyes as she was held - almost like she was going to weep
@samsagitarias the actress closed her eyes out of fear of being hit in the eye is all. History points to the fact that Mary died of natural causes and not by the hands of anyone. it was very common to blame posionings and hits within royal families to gain access to rulership. their is more evidence that Mary died of Dropsy than their is that Elizabeth ordered at hit on her.
@stevenc08 Thank you. Its quite major historical fact to get wrong, twas why i was a little confused as to what on earth was going on. Its a little like the Tudors, writing in that Henry's son by Bessie Blount died whilst a small child, when in fact he died between the ages of 15 and 17, cant remember which, but he had already been married for three years when he died of TB - that part is true, he did die of that, but not as a small child . Its annoying when major things are gotten wrong
"Ballard (d. craig) was executed on the first day along with the other main conspirators. The manner of their deaths was so bloody and horrific that it deeply shocked those who were present at the spectacle. When Elizabeth was told of the suffering the men had endured on the scaffold, she is said to have ordered that the remaining seven conspirators be left hanging until they were 'quite dead' before being cut down and butchered."
torture scene is like taking a holiday compared to his end
See 7:20 - A letter from the pope to Norfolk which conspired him with the Anti-Elizabethan/Protestant movement. He only has to sign the letter to accomplish the treason against his queen and so he did (8:50) wih the help of his mistress, one of Walsingham's "special agents" (see also one of the servants at the court of Mary de Guise and the whistle-blowers on the Armada in "The Golden Age")
Yes he was one smart fellow, but he died dept-ridden eventually.
Right, but the woman on the bed was Mary Guise, not Mary, Queen of Scotts. Mary, Queen of Scotts was the granddaughter of Margaret Tudor, who was the older sister of Henry VIII. Margaret Tudor married the King of Scotland, and had James V, who in turn married Mary of Guise (who was French) and had Mary Queen of Scotts.
Oh!.. I thought Mary, Queen of Scotts, was the Daughter of Margaret Tudor.. But she's her Granddaughter.. still makin her and Elizabeth cuzins.. just not first Cuzins.. Thanks clearing that up
Ugh, I know. The best thing I can say for this movie is that is characterizes Elizabeth well. It makes her more relatable, which is important when trying to sell history to a mass of people (most of whom don't keep up with it).
Is this is the last part?

@samsagitarias in that scene Mary is depicted as having been murdered. history points to death by natural causes.

When Elizabeth was told of the suffering the men had endured on the scaffold, she is said to have ordered that the remaining seven conspirators be left hanging until they were 'quite dead' before being cut down and butchered."
torture scene is like taking a holiday compared to his end

what did he sign at 9:13
Naznazi89xxx 2 years ago
See 7:20 - A letter from the pope to Norfolk which conspired him with the Anti-Elizabethan/Protestant movement. He only has to sign the letter to accomplish the treason against his queen and so he did (8:50) wih the help of his mistress, one of Walsingham's "special agents" (see also one of the servants at the court of Mary de Guise and the whistle-blowers on the Armada in "The Golden Age")
Yes he was one smart fellow, but he died dept-ridden eventually.

That's not Mary, Queen of Scotts, that Mary of Guise, her mother.
Neona135 2 years ago 4
Mary, Queen of Scotts was the Daughter of one of Henry VIII's siblings making her Elizabeths cuzin
pernellcook0508 2 years ago
@pernellcook0508

The real story is dramatic enough; why make it inaccurate?

Ugh, I know. The best thing I can say for this movie is that is characterizes Elizabeth well. It makes her more relatable, which is important when trying to sell history to a mass of people (most of whom don't keep up with it).
