  • You know, the only bad things about the Smiths was that as great as the music was, they still looked like 80s geeks. I'm sorry, but that entire 80s fashion was horrible. I lived through that time, but never bought into the look, nor much of the music.

  • Many rainy days in my room with my girlfriend when I was a teenager to this one.

  • Great song!

  • Beautiful melancholic instrumental, probably the best instrumental ever!

  • faves of all time :D since '87

  • classic morrissey!...knew he had a great track, so did not put lyrics to it to protect it ...just like new order did with "the happy one"

  • @serkdude "louder than bombs" or how soon is now b-side

  • Was this an unrealesd song as it doesn't seem to be on any of The Smiths albums?

  • yeah, I do like this song

  • May I recommend the book 'A Concise Guide To Eighties Music' by Karl Vorderman. The author is a big fan of this fine instrumental.

  • Great song!

  • This music is music that plays in Soviet Russia

  • @ Daiul, Oscillate Wildly is an (almost) anagram of Oscar Wilde.

  • Oscar Wilde. Nostalgic.

  • This song just makes me think of a grey day in England walking cobble stone streets... I love it. The Smiths are just genius and HEAVILY underrated!!

  • This is the kind of music that plays in Heaven.

  • How is it, that with none of Morrissey's wonderful lyrics, the song still manages to capture all of this emotion? Johnny Marr... *sigh* ...what can I say...

  • genius its true jhonny marr

  • The bes of this is the lyric posted here :P

  • lolwtf is up with the lyric's description? XD

  • In CREATING the music of The Smiths. THANK GOD there were two. Probably my favourite Smiths song. GENIUS Mr. Marr!!!

  • I have never met a Smiths fan I didn't like.

  • Creci escuchando a Smiths en mi adolescencia,si es cierto tiene ese sonido exclusivo, como otros grupos de la epoca.Tenian personalidad, voces autenticas, peculiares.Parece que se cumple el dicho, cualquier tiempo pasado nos parece mejor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is one of the best songs ever, into the list of best pop songs ever, the smiths have quite a few besat songs ever in their discography... An incredible unique band with an unique sound with such extreme brilliance .... great lyrics, great singer´s voice, amazing melodies,

  • Manchester's Greatest!

  • INGENIOUS!!

    Long live Osc(ill)a(te) Wild(ly)!!

  • @harvey1954 Is you being ironic, no???

  • @Pardaco Of course, his vocals are almost as good as the lyrics.

  • @harvey1954 So don´t you like of The Smits???

(Sorry if I made mistakes, my english is not good because I´m Brazilian)

  • Comment removed

  • @harvey1954 However, this Smits song is looks like a Simply Red music, It´s weird, but it´s good.

  • The lyrics in the description: so much win.

  • @charliemethven I was just gonna comment on them xD

    They're so awesome

  • favourite

    at my teens

    love it girl

  • once again the smiths rule the world of music

  • Most Amazing instrumental Ive ever heard :)

  • is it me? or does he have a tree in pants?

  • @FluffyBunnyKitties Yes, it's a bunch of flowers or green...I have seen them live and he had this large bunch of beautiful white gladiolis sticking out of his jeans and I personally think it was an homage to poetry of nature. Morrissey is a poet. I love him with all his conflicts and contradictions.

  • Johnny used to look like Ric Okasic (? the singer for the Cars).

  • recently this track has been used on the Weather Channel as a musical bed- couldn't recall the title until now- thank You MonaMonroe & Oscar Wilde!

  • dimdim dim dim!

  • ooh and The Lyrics on the Box are sooo funny

  • I LoVe ThiS TraCk and LOvE MOrrIssEy but THat Is oNe Gay Dance, but sTiLl loOk hOt...

    hehe LoVe The SmiThs..

  • @mothekat why type like this. and it's not a 'gay dance' it's a morrissey dance.

  • Edit: Seeing the TWC comments further down the page, guess I'm not alone.

  • Has anyone else noticed that Oscillate Wildly has gotten some recent play as a bed for The Weather Channel's "Local on the 8s" forecasts?

  • Best Instrumental Song Ever.

  • @RlCHART am also a the smiths fan but I beg you listen to some pink floyd songs.... like echoes :D if you think this is the best ever.. I tend to agree but there are other ones..

  • @RlCHART true

  • @RlCHART along with Meeting in the Aisle by Radiohead :P

  • I've just noticed the "lyrics" in the description box hehe, gave me a giggle :)

I love this piece of music. Fanfuckingtastic.

  • Love the progression to the chorus. 0:33 to 0:40.

Geoff Travis wanted Morrissey to add lyrics, but both Morrissey and Marr wanted to leave it as an instrumental. Morrisey's only contribution was to christen it Oscillate Wildly, named after a line from the book 'From Reverence to Rape'.

  • this is GOD

  • who needs lyrics when music sounds this good

    johny marr is the man

  • morrissey said he loved this track

  • Love Morrissey :) and his dancing haha

  • This tune reminds me of wandering about in Afflecks, Manchester in about 86 or 87 looking for tweed jackets, vintage 501s and doc shoes buying Wedding Present and Pixies 12" singles on vinyl from Eastern Bloc

  • They must have liked this better without vocals. What a great instrumental...

  • MARR AMAZING.!

  • Definitely deserved a vocal, I think Morrissey would have made this amazing

  • @Renegademaster15 putting vocals on this song is like putting a fork in a bowl of soup...you just don't need it.. it's a sublime instrumental.

  • @4evainter If you think Morrissey's vocals and Johnny's music goes together like a fork in a bowl of soup maybe you should listen to more Smith songs

To me there has never been a more natural harmony in the history of music

  • @Renegademaster15 no dude you misunderstood me i meant for THIS song (not the entire smiths catalogue)..this song's perfect as it is :)

  • @4evainter Hard to say when we'll never get to hear what Morrissey would do with it

  • @Renegademaster15 i wish i can give you a link but i can't remember where lol but morrissey himself said he likes this song..sometimes you just don't need lyrics.

  • I actually heard this on the weather channel

  • @rael6 I hear this in Columbus, Ohio on TWC also usually comes on after a storm has moved through the area, and everythings clearing out, never paid attention until i could place it, even though the same song has been played since 1997. None of my new music friends get it when the comment comes of my favorite group being the background music for TWC!

  • I sung this in Karaoke last week

  • Love the song, but needs pot.

  • listening to the smiths make me feel so free, as if im no bound by anything or anyone. simply brilliant.

  • anybody notice this is now the weather channel's song? reminds me of being a teenager...

  • @missizpresident Me too.

  • this song always reminds me of golden brown by the stranglers

  • Comment removed

  • i just heard this on "local on the 8s" of all places

  • @bludgeoningcaillou That's so funny! I've been trying to remember who did this song for so long. I heard it on the Weather Channel as well. A little Google-fu, and voila!

  • this should have WAY more views!!! WTF!

  • If Love had a sound, this is what it would sound like. By the same token if the agony of being heartbroken could be heard this is what it would say. No words, just emotion. This sound is echoing through my heart for the wrong reasons. =(

  • Alguma semelhança com Legião Urbana? rsrs a forma de dançar, as roupas tudo bem copiado dos Smiths eee!

  • wrong video to song !

  • @briantheirishdog what do u mean ?

  • i like this song. nive video ;)

  • I love all the performances where morrissey has a bush in his ass! LOL...My brother and I used to watch them all the time, he had the VHS...miss those days

  • And with lyrics in the descriptions!! Thank god, now we can all sing along ; )

  • his jacket has his face on it, thats wassup

  • I hate your cats ):

  • I found a rose that caught my eye, She was as pure as the blue sky. Fragil and subtle, like a newborn child. I found a rose that made me smile. I found a rose that looked so right, I didn't realize this rose had spikes! A closer looked revealed her thorns but i reached out to grab her warmth. I found a rose with thorns, She hurts to hold, but i stil try. To hold the rose that caught my eye, I hate to stare, it hurts my eyes. someone help me, im going blind. Before i knew it! u stole my heart.
  • I love the piano at :40, just before the chorus. It sounds as if it's going slightly out of control and out of tune. Brilliant piece!

  • There is a restaurant in Sydney named after this song, I ate there a few years ago.....

  • @tNJippoes there is a light and it never goo's oot

  • LMAO the lyrics are brilliant. The first time I heard this I was expecting Morissey's vocals though. This is such a haunting piece of music.

  • ahahha I love the lyrics :D

  • Long live THE SMITHS !!!

  • @iiimethiii

haha dude where have you been they broke up decades ago! XD

but I see what you mean, and I concur! :D

  • the smiths forever

  • I LUV this song and always have...one of their absolute best :D

  • I'm presuming Morrisey at least came up with the title, Oscillate Wildly does sound a lot like Oscar Wilde.

  • Whoa. That just blew my mind, I can't believe I never thought of that. Thanks, yo.

  • No shit sherlock! only messin sir, brilliant song

  • @Daiul of course he did, it was TOTALLY because of oscar wilde :)

  • @Daiul The name actually comes from Molly Haskell's book 'From Reverence to Rape', where she states that 'films like Mr Skeffington oscillate wildly in mood'. (source - Mozipedia, Simon Goddard).

But I think it's safe to presume that Morrissey chose it on the basis that it sounds like Oscar Wilde.

  • @73rbth That's pretty interesting. Every now and then I get a responce saying something like 'no shit sherlock' to this comment that I gave over a year a go! So thank you for your worthwhile and interesting responce, it's very much appreicated.

  • @Daiul Glad to be of positive service :)

Mozipedia is a really good book for little things like that, perhaps you should look into it, sounds like you'd enjoy it. I got it for Christmas, and it's a very good read.

  • @Daiul This song is a homage to Oscar Wilde

  • Smiths rules! ; )

  • lot of hip thrusting by morrissey

  • You did a wonderful job. I'm an 80's girl for real and love to see others love them this much. Took about 10-15 to love them again, but can't beat it these days!! Anyway, great video!!

  • ... and "posh" instead of "post"... I'll get me coat

  • ...arse, I obviously meant "Korma"... darn

  • There's a post restaurant in Newtown (Sydney) called Oscillate Wildly... any one want to go halves on setting up a dodgy Indian serving drunks next door and calling it "Girlfriend in a Koma"... oh go on, you know you want to!

  • Comment removed

  • @agghtee You can count me in!!

  • @agghtee Korma?>

  • @agghtee "Waitress, How Soon is Now?"

  • If you google "The Smiths - Oscillate Wildly" half the entries are for the lyrics LOL

  • This montage is really well made. Thank you for uploading this way. Really nice!

  • i love it

  • I kept waiting for the lyrics

    but there were no lyrics

cette chanson sans texte cest ma vie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • *oscilates wildly*

I love that you wrote lyrics <3

  • Earlier today, I heard this being played on weather channel's 'local on the 8's'...

  • @ MonaMonroe: I think you forgot one dimdim ;-)

Thank you so much for posting this song, it's so unique

  • if not their best song, their best title.

Did morrissey contribute to anything in this song btw?

  • i totally clicked on this strictly because of its hilarious title.

  • And, you found art.

  • Morrissey plays the piano on this track i think.

  • You think wrong, robbieonguitar, twas Mr Marr playing the piano on this track.

The only piano part played by Mr Morrissey on a Smiths recording, was the outro to 'Death of a Disco Dancer', on Strangeways.

  • I am sure i read somewhere that Morrissey played the piano on this song. As Morrissey can play the piano haha.

I thought Marr composed this (As always) and Morrissey played the piano. Ah well, whoever played, its a fantastic piece of music.

  • robbieonguitar: Agreed that it's a fantastic track, but it's definately Johnny tinkling the ivories.

I just checked the credits, and the piano playing is credited to JM. Andy Rourke on cello.

To quote Moz on 'Oscillate Wildly': "I totally approved, but obviously, I didn't physically contribute".

From the (great) book, 'The Songs That Saved Your Life'. Simon Goddard. 2002.

There you have it from the man himself.

  • Alas, i stand corrected. Thanks for the trivia =)

  • robbieonguitar:, if it's trivia you want, I'm your man! :)

  • Morrisseyisdead;

No. Morrissey did NOT play piano on 'Asleep'. It was played by Johnny Marr.

The ONLY time that Morrissey ever played piano on a Smiths recording, was 'Death of a Disco Dancer', and it can hardly be described as 'playing'.

  • I heard he wrote the piano parts for it though?

  • Morrisseyisdead;

Again, no. You should slap the person who told you that. Johnny wrote, and played, the piano part, and it's based on a fade out piano part he wrote for the original version of 'Suffer Little Children', which can be heard on the Troy Tate recording of the first album.

  • *shudders* that Troy Tate album still haunts me. It's amazing how 1 producer could fuck up 10 great songs.

I think I incorrectly read it, I do know that Morrissey provided the wind noises with a BBC sound effects album.

  • Morrisseyisdead:

I quite like the Troy version. The outro to HiG is never ending! :)

Moz was always using BBC sound effects recordings. The intro to 'Last Night I Dreamt' is a fine example. Yes, the wind noises were from a BBC recording.

  • CrzyLion: Only the title.

  • es exelente el nivel musical solo tengo una duda quien toca el piano en esta cancion? who plays the piano in this song? gracias the smiths the best

  • I love this song, is the best from them, But anyone has the piano lyrics? :(

  • where Can I find the lyrics?

  • it's an instrumental, it has no lyrics

  • oh i was just 13 years old

  • Brilliant music.

  • Check 1:49, the Mozster shakes his flowery arse to the beat.

  • trut dat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this fucking songs always makes me cry..for personal reasons. and the images? worst! i know they will NEVER EVER get back together...now that makes me fucking cry!

  • this song makes me oscillate wildly. seriosly my body is wuthering in the rhythm of this song

  • The last picture is the best

  • aweee you wrote lyrics!!!! XD

  • Video clips well put together, thanks. Is that the old Manchester station before conversion to G_Mex at the end?

  • Indeed it is Manchester Central Station, Which is now the Gmex building. Ironic that they played there a few years later in '86

  • awesome

    good discribing

  • I love this montage, very well done!! And this song has always been one of my favorite Smiths song. The melody and arrangement are simply haunting. It brings back those sweet Smiths memories, haha. Thanks for posting!!!

  • You (some) idiots. The video clips are montages from other songs. You see a piano anywhere?

  • was this on ne album?

  • by the way, love the lyrics :)

  • a long time ago i once was very, very sad because of a boy... i cried like 30 minutes, very hard, couldn't almost breathe, and the same time this song was repeatedly playing on the background... oh i can't describe the nostalgia now<3
