  • Too bad the system is broken.

  • We need to SAVE wikipedia! It's the only website I use to get information!

  • I think Wikipedia needs a makeover, I suggest them to use Metro UI like those used in the new Windows 8. I think u could ask the editors ,who r adept in developing, for help(which would be free). It would attract many people to use Wikipedia. I see its homepage as slightly boring but knowledgeable.

  • JUST PUT ADVERTISEMENTS DAMMIT.

Its hard to see my favourite site like this, don't worry wiki no one will care about a stupid company trying to sell things in the corner of the page. I'll even promise to the click on them.

  • "Almost 50 % have no religion".Well that explain's a lot.

  • @MrPsychedelia101 yeah, that are around another 50% misguided by some form of "god"

  • @TomusMedia No, these another 50% are unbigoted and some of them are aware of evidence for God.

  • it is obvious that computer will substitute all human needs for textual, graphical and acoustic information. so no teachers, schools, universities and that high amount of time and money that we did or do spend on them are required. i wish i would born some decades later.

  • @stdxytb Computers are some of the dumbest machines on earth; they produce nothing. They have no intelligent thought apart from contributors. Computers are very good at spreading information and very bad at creating it. Digitalized information is not an end, but a means. If anything, computers are fueling human need for "textual, geographic, and acoustic information." Furthermore, there is no data to back your idea that teachers, schools, or universities will be negatively impacted by computers.

  • *geographic :D

  • I think Wikipedia is a wonderful way to gain knowledge on a topic and do background reading, but it is not yet at the level where you can fully rely on it to do a research project for your college professor. About 80% of the time I can count on WP to give me factual information on prominent topics, and I think as the years go by and the quality strengthens through continuous positive contributions it will only get better. WP is a lot different now than it was just a few years ago, say in 2006

  • Ha Ha, looks like all the banned editors are whining in these comments, losers!

  • You dont mention on how 50% of wiki is utter bullshit :D

  • Fuck Wikipedia. Like all mainstream media, they lie. They edit to allow history to be rewritten & eventually no one will know they fuckin' lie. They have disinformation about Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Watergate and many other important people and events in history. I put information in it, cited the source in detail and the site was frozen for months. Then, when it came back on line, the info I put in wasn't there. It's bullshit. Use it, but don't trust it.

  • @tripfunkmonster ahhhhhhhhhh, we have a conspiracy theorist in our midst

  • @TomusMedia What theory? I mentioned something I experienced. I put FACTS directly from a book onto a Wikipedia entry and notated the exact pages. I made no mistake. No theory. No opinion. And, it was eliminated. How would you explain that? Would it bother you?

  • wikipedia is bullshit true info 100% correct bookmark WIKIPEDIA-WATCH ORG

  • As for the decree known as "blog-killer", the italian section of wikipedia is actually closed.

regard the Decree: according to paragraph 29, whoever feels offended by content on a blog, an online newspaper and most likely, even on Wikipedia, can lay claim to the right to ask not only the removal, but also its replacement with a "correction" to his liking, even if the information is proven right by documents, evidences and so on.

  • this is beneath the surface pur eshit world's place for pedophiles!fuk dont CREATE FUCKIN WIKIPEDIA SHIT DONT SPONSOR IT, BEST STUFF AND ALL ITS LINKS BOOKMARK 100% TRUTH WIKIPEDIA-WATCH ORG!RULES!

  • :')

  • Thank you wikipedia for not having ads, they make websites much slower and are distracting!

  • The video is great! Please enable closed captions!!

  • Wikipedia is just awesome!

  • one of the few useful website online right now.

  • State OF SOROW S BETTER PATHETIC WORD!gr suport prin tel ll WIKIPEDIA-WATCH ORG SUK IT REAL HARD DirTY WIKIPEDOIDIOTS LOL2US we rules u drules 4ever like alison ho jdelanoy bsadowskh all lowly wikipedos!!!

  • Unfortunately wikipedia is now run by the admins who use their power to ban people who disagree with their often unfounden opinions. A very sad state of affairs.

  • @Endomorphian2 I would have to disagree with you there. Although it is undeniable that there are some Admins who do not necessarily operate in the spirit of Adminship, as a whole the entire administration system is quite efficient and reliable.

  • @Endomorphian2 How so? If you are mad about a ban you've been given, there are ways to appeal it.

  • Wikipedia: Good in terms of Art and ancient history, but absolutely sionist (see negation of the revisionism, Leuchter, Lübeck, Israeli issues, etc).

  • Thumbs up! I'm a wikipedian from BRIC and I'll try to be even more caring & responsible from now on, on wiki.

  • I love wikipedia to no end. It's not always the best/most accurate source but a great one nevertheless.

  • Can someone please tell me what application could make a video clip like this?

  • @VioletVivirand You can create such animations with Adobe Flash

  • @Cyrawn No, it's not flash. It's Adobe After Effects. :D

  • Great infographic in every way. Clever, appropriate, beautiful composition-wise and colour-wise. You almost feel proud of humanity and Wikipedia in the end.

  • That is truly a brilliant 'under four minutes' presentation. It's exemplary!

  • Awesome!

  • 3 hurray for Wikipedia!

    Hip hip!

  • @ZequeZ1 Hooray!

  • @rems1995 Hip hip!

  • Good concept by the founder but bad monopolized foundation group.

    Hong Kong is an example.

It controls all data input , do not allow edit , even the edit is responsible.

It used the name of WIKI-foundation and make HK people into a ignorance situation , even the matter wrote in the WIKI is wrong.

In the video , the founder said foundation teammates will not touch any article while the teammates in Hong Kong have own both allowance.

I prefer use English one instead of Chinese one.

  • Just 1.2 million? wow humanity really sucks

  • Wikipedia is the most important website ever made. Not in the last 10 years. Ever.

  • Great video. Easy to undersand!

  • Thumps Up if you copy paste all your homework from wikipedia too!!!!!!!

  • What music was used throughout? Shazam fails to find a match, I find it intriguing.

  • @jessesaves Minor, minor criticism - why is the keyhole at 0:24 upside down? Otherwise very nice!

  • Sorry I was wrong Ride on Wiki

  • yea! go india!

  • jewpedia

  • More citations is definitely a good goal but more superscript symbols in the text pointing to footnotes impair the reading fluency. Though, it's more an issue of display than content.

Speaking of display, when will those horrible, unselectable, unzoomable, greyscale AAed formula images be a thing of the past (at least for the users with MathML support)?

  • Comment removed

  • @595o Are you honestly that god awful at reading that every superscripted number stops you in your tracks?

  • @ZeekyQSantos That's a loaded question, so I won't answer it, but go ask yourself why there's the typographical rule that large blocks text should appear in a uniform grey when looked at with squinted eyes.

  • @595o You keep telling yourself that everyone else has as much trouble reading as you do, but you're making mountains out of mole hills here.

  • 2 people hate knowledge

  • Comment removed

  • @Bartman67 actually, wikileaks and wikipedia are 2 totally different companies that arent even related. they may share a similar name, but they are fundamentally different. Please read up on this before you spread this, this is absolutely false information.

  • @Bartman67 fool u cant even spell wikileaks its and they arent related so listen up , so you dont make a fool of yourself where someone can see your face SMH

  • @Bartman67 Yeah and what does your Queen think about this?

  • I would really like to ask everyone here who likes and uses Wikipedia to contribute in some way. Get involved. You can start like most people, by making minor edits to articles. Then you can consider joining as a registered member. I also donate to the foundation annually, I always donate up to $40 not more. It's not much but if everyone would donate a small amount that would make sure that not only Wikipedia but also the other projects can go on for at least another 10 years!

  • So year, I'm really excited about Wikipedia! I have not spent as much time with the other sister projects as I have with Wikipedia. But I have bookmarked the start page of Wiktionary in few languages that I have accessible from the Bookmarks Toolbar in Firefox. Although I am mostly using Google Translate when I need to translate something but Wiktionary is of course more like a traditional dictionary, it elaborates more on different words and sometimes suggests translations to other languages.

  • I have done few minor edits in the past but last year I decided to join Wikipedia as a member. I mostly spend time editing rather than creating new articles. But I have started few articles, usually out of a desire to describe something that was not covered yet, something I had a little knowledge about. Others would usually expand that article and improve it. And that's what's most important right now to make the existing articles even better.

  • Whatever it is, Wikipedia usually has an answer. I would say I get an answer 97% of the time whenever I look up something, and that's just amazing how much information there is stored on those servers. It really is like a sum of all human knowledge, or at least it's on it's way to become. But as we know knowledge is not static and it never should be.

  • I have created a bookmarks folder that is easily accessible from the Bookmarks Toolbar in Firefox (another great project). There I have bookmarked the start pages of Wikipedia in several languages. Whenever I need to look up something I can easily opean a new tab in Firefox and click on my bookmarks folder and choose desired Wikipedia bookmark and look it up.

  • WAY TO GO WIKIPEDIA! I visit Wikipedia in two to four languages, probably about twenty five times a day on an average. Alongside with Google and YouTube, it is the web site that I visit the most when surfing the Web. And among the three, Wikipedia is absolutely my favorite web site.

  • super awesome!

  • His voice is very soothing

  • I have attended the Wikipedia's 10th Annivarsary function, organized at VJTI. Mumbai. Being one of the language writers (Kannada) I enjoyed the event, every bit of it. Thanks to Jimmy wales, who made it possible for the entire world !

  • sweet typography

  • This is very.. inspirational.

  • R'Amen!

  • thats one awesome video. both information and eyecandy wise. who made the graphics?

  • @bajer111 thank you! The JESS3 team did all of the graphic work and animation. cheers ~Leslie Bradshaw [President, JESS3]

  • This was so insightful :3

  • For the good order: So we donated our money so that Mr. Wales could hire "jess3" to make this data-visual? Or is this video 'donated' too? Correct me if am wrong peeps it just smells!

  • @berserkdrift I am the co-founder and President of JESS3 and I can tell you that we, JESS3, funded this project 100%. We received no outside payment from anyone and especially not Jimmy Wales / Wikimedia. Your comment is misplaced and completely missed the gift that our firm did free of charge. Complete disclosure on the JESS3 blog. Cheers! -Leslie Bradshaw

  • @LeslieAnn44 alright, pardon me for my rudeness then, I did not came here through your blog so I couldn't know that. al through I think my question was legit as a donator. Thanks a lot for your donation and time :) It's really an awesome video! Topnotch!

  • This video definitely should be made available under a free license :)

  • @somevalidusername you are in luck! We released it as CC-BY-SA, check out the JESS3 Vimeo page (/jess3) and you will be able to download, attribute and share alike! Best, Leslie Bradshaw [President, JESS3]

  • You ought to enable the option of subtitles in English and other languages in order to edit them from Youtube.

  • Great video, besides. Wikipedia is groing so fast that back in 2004 it made Encarta to dissappear.

  • @Skatox And that is, perhaps, one of the most important achievements of the free culture movement.

  • Sweet video, I didn't know half of the history of Wikipedia.
