  • The sound ain't great but I thought he was talking to D'Arcy about her playing. Nothing new there! If it was aimed at Jimmy, well, he certainly slowed and played the album version with such restrained power, with just one emotional-swell in the middle. Definitely in my top 10 Pumpkin drum-tracks from the Master.

  • To everyone talking about tension and arguing, thats not really what this is. It's just when youre trying to work out a song you have to be brutally honest, or else you wont get anywhere.

  • I swear drummers have a compulsive need to always be playing. Every drummer that I've ever been in a band with has done it.

  • @QuarantineThePast Indeed... Every time i tune i always have to tell the drummer to shut up -_-

  • Haha Billy Corgan's such an asshole.

  • @TheJasongrodsky

Not really, He had to be honest to get the best possible result, and Jimmy was playing way to fast.

  • and they play it so much faster live... weird

  • Tension? This is pattycake compared to what the Siamese Dream recordings were like.

  • The dood with the cerly hair looks like Sam Adato

  • @poshi12

I think that's one of the album's producers, Mark Ellis (aka. Flood.)

  • @arklop5

Cool. He has the best hair!lol:]

  • You can turn down the voice of god a little.~b.c.♥

  • Poor James. D:

  • floods trying so hard to be patient with billy.

why did they even hire a producer? i guess billys not very good with mixing boards..

  • you really get to see another side of the pumpkins here, the one we always read about in interviews...even at their peak there was an impermeable tension between everyone

  • @Grox This isn't tension.. trust me i'm in a band and when you record a record it can be so fucking stressful.. You can be best friends and you would act like this... And when you make a song. But you don't take it to heart.. It all falls apart when people do.

  • 6:35...Already, at this early stage of the album making process, Billy is scheming to track all the instruments himself... ;)

  • The "Bat Strat" is a 57 Strat. Same with the "Gish" Strat. Billy's Gish era guitars had Gold, Silver and Red Lace Sensor pickups, and Siamese/MCIS strats had Blue, Silver, and Red Laces.

  • One of the most talented frontmen of all time!

  • anyone know what guitar billy's got on him

  • @Drunksonic Looks like a Fender Stratocaster

  • @blendoutt yeah well the thing with strats is that there's a whole lot more than one kind. i'm talking model + changed pickups if he changed any

  • @Drunksonic whoops sorry wouldnt know too much about strats, im more of a gibson guy

  • @blendoutt lol i like SG's, they look as light/lighter than les pauls and i hear they have similar tones. fender and gibson both have their sides of great guitarists.

  • @Drunksonic yeah SG's are a lot lighter than les pauls, but i have a les paul and you get used to the weight. SG's are much better for lead guitar though

  • @blendoutt i wanted to get a worn cherry red SG but i decided to just get a mexi strat

  • @Drunksonic good taste my friend, good taste :)

  • @Drunksonic Billy always uses 60s or custom fender strats. most solid pumpkins sound is billy shredding on the strat with james laying in heavy rhythm or extra lines with the les paul

  • @Drunksonic well I don't know the exact model but it's definitley one from the 1970's because it has the pre CBS headstock. It has lace sensor red pickups in it absolutely amazing pickups!!!

  • Billy didn't want to go for a ride back then

  • i love how they didn't have some details clear at the time and they were just having fun rolling with it, this is totally raw and i love it

  • they always had the tendency to play too fast in live performances...

  • haha @ 1:10 , Billy's raisin' da roof. lmfaoooo

  • Note the dual Mesa Strategy 500 power amps behind him.

  • Comment removed

  • he loos like a tottal dork with hair

  • Haha Billy loves his MOOOOOOOOMMY!!!!!!

  • Genius

  • "We probably won't record anything like this"

Little did Billy know that this very song that they did indeed record would become one of the greatest tracks...

  • Jimmy is notorious for being a fast drummer. Alot of their live shit is done at a quicker speed, because Jimmy's drumming dictates it...and it's not like Billy can tell him 50 times to slow down during a live set. Probably has something to do with him being wrecked on many narcotics.

  • Billy Corgan looks coked up at the end.

  • its no surprise how the band didnt last

  • Comment removed

  • Iconic, and genius, and classic, and perfect riff!

  • This is hilarious!!!!! It's like a real live version of the Will Ferrell Cowbell skit but instead of a the cowbell problem, it's a tempo thing.....

  • amazing how much more quality you can get today by using a simple phone instead of a big camera like this.

God how they rocked back then...

  • ahh good ol band rehearsal. i remember doing all this shit when i was in a band. "you came in too fast", "you came in to slow", "what's the set list", "you're an hour late to practice", "stop bringing your stupid girlfriend", "your flat" hahahahah its all worth it.

  • @PopExpo

thats amazing man, i feel like i been through all that, funny too! lol

  • this sounds amazing, i read that almos all the heavy music on mellon collie was done over with atleast 7 or 8 guitar track overdubs to get the heavy distorted soun, but what i hear sounds very similar and just as good as the albums....wonder if that was just a fib or something....

  • i dont know how billy can hear because i cant, and im a drummer D:

  • funny cause they play it faster live most of the time

  • good stuff!!!

  • I used to Corgan and his spot in R.S. top 100 guitarists...when i was like 11. now i just fucking think damn..... this guy rocks balls! i'm re-discovering smashing pumpkins and . . . and really loving it.

  • @honza401 Great riffs, terrible lyrics. Always has been, always will be.

  • @dashofchutmeg Hows your band doin? :)

  • @majorkeybaree You do realize that Baja Men (they of "Who Let the Dogs Out?") is a famous band, right? Popularity has no correlation with talent.

  • @dashofchutmeg You probably just don't understand them.

  • @NightBlazer37 To quote Pavement: "Out on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins /

nature kids, they don't have no function / I don't understand what they mean / and I could really give a fuck."

  • @dashofchutmeg One those lyrics are ass from that Pavement quote, so I'd really love to see what you call good lyrics. I agree fame doesn't dictate whether one has talent or not but it also doesn't mean someone doesn't have talent, and that's something Billy, Jimmy and the rest of the group had in spades. And three, if you don't give a fuck then why the hell are you here?

  • @DMCMaster550 I'm not here to argue that Stephen Malkmus is the greatest lyricist in history. (That said, I don't think there are many people over the age of 14 who would argue that Corgan is a good lyricist, particularly in comparison with the clever, light-footed lines of Pavement.) I'm here to argue that Billy Corgan's music has and has always had the emotional depth of a puddle.

  • @dashofchutmeg Perhaps it's different tastes lyrically, I find Corgan far more poetic, he was less so in the early days because of that angsty teen pratting of his. But particularly Adore to now I'd say he's better. Personally I think Malkmus has the depth of a puddle, I don't remember I line/I don't remember a word/But I don't care, I care, I really don't care/Did you see the drummers hair? That seems emotionless in my eyes. Personally I think Marko Saaresto of Poets of the Fall is superior.

  • @DMCMaster550 It's satire. It's not his fault you don't get it. Also, to quote "Ava Adore": "It's you that I adore / you'll always be my whore." Riveting.

  • @dashofchutmeg I get the satire but it still seems meaningless. And I'll give you that, the opening line in that song is tripe. To quote 'The Rose March' Slow pose/And cross eyed/Visions owed to the railroad ties/humpbacks and sugar shacks/shotgun wed to the poison of our past.' I find that far more poetic emotional than the upbeat straightforward satire of Pavement. Corgan doesn't write lyrics, he's a poet, he just adds music to it, he's no W.S. Merwin but he's up there with Lisa Jarnot.

  • @DMCMaster550 Let me set this straight The Smashing Pumpkins are amazing and have written and still write some of the most intelligent, deep, and emotional music ever lyrics. Poets Of The Fall are amazing and have written, and still write some of the most intelligent, deep, and emotional music and lyrics ever. Between Poets Of The Fall and The Smashing Pumpkins there is so much talent I'm surprised it hasn't exploded the earth.

  • @nicholsjoshua15 I agree with you 100% all we gotta do is get dashofchutmeg to be a little less jerk on Pumpkins' videos.

  • @DMCMaster550 That's true because there are only three albums I have worn out and had to replace The Smashing Pumpkins "Gish" Poets Of The Fall "Signs Of Life" and R.E.M. "Automatic For The People." No one can say anything bad about The Smashing Pumpkins and have it make any sense.

  • that? is a millionaire in the old man garb and a rock god

  • Did He Dye His Hair Black ?

  • @ryneldo Yes, when he had hair.

  • i kinda dislike how they're just showing billy..

  • its always perplexed me as to how the fuck billy wraps his thumb over the top of the guitar neck

  • @JousterinJudge thin neck

  • the blues version. LOL. watching these people makes me happy.

  • did he say that "we probably won't record anything like this"?

  • his hair slowly descents into Zero and all it's left is a brainiac zero pumpkin head

  • Poor Sheila.

  • Fuck off, been in the studio .. dnt call him a dick, this is after days, weeks, months etc of rehearsing same shit. Perfectionism is gold ... Mellancholy turned out to be one of the greatest double albums out there and your calling him a dick for a clip[ of the session .. Morons

  • I love the in depth recording shit, really! what other band (successful) okay's this? zero in preproduction...priceless. btw, billy was a dick to jimmy, no doubt. dude had issues, but then again, that's why the pumpkins were so damn good.

  • He's acting like a tweaker

  • To Kkiake

Because those videos were kinda hard to find at that times.

They were on ftps and private spaces - I was lucky to catch them ;)

  • Wow. How did I not see this at the peak of my SP fandom?

Was watching the old vids for nostalgia and came across this. Neat!

  • when billy corgan had hair

  • @azasbe, Yeah, he had hair during the recording of this song, but he's bald in the music video. I wonder what happened in between.

  • @GuitarHeroPhenomSux He pulled his hair out over tempo fluctuations?

  • use that pinkie boy!

  • I love how they didn't realise how much of a hit this song would become =P

  • Billy loves his mom.

  • billy in control.

  • c00l !!!!!!!!!

  • TCR 18 : 18 : 18 2:50

  • god billy im glad you stoped doing drugs your acting like a fucking tweaker in this vid lol

  • Corgan didn't do drugs. He may have at one period during his life because when he was in The Marked and early SP(before they made an album) he was heavily influenced by psychadelic music, and he supports a bunch of psychadelic shit but he never abused them or anything(cept maybe pills). He just used to act stupid. Watch any old pumpkins video, he just acts retarded a lot lol.

  • @Grunge00125 Actually in his "Confessions blog", he talks about taking Ecstacy a lot in the pre-Adore period and in his commentary on the Videography DVD, he claims during the Gish/SD era he was "Taking loads of LSD".

  • as I said: he didn't abuse drugs. He obviously did LSD off camera(maybe onstage at early shows) cause he's never really that out there in interviews. Ecstacy, maybe. I can't see him doing it, but at the same time he was a hipster for awhile and was just weird in the late 90s(Adore/Machina era).

But he's never done like coke or heroin while in the band. LSD isn't physically addictive and ecstacy has some issues surrounding how bad it really is. And he was very outspoken about drug use in the

  • 90s(not so much anymore as i assume most of the people he knew that used drugs have either stopped or he's lost contact with them) so he's never done like a super hard drug.

  • @Grunge00125 I misunderstood what you were sayin'. Sorry.

  • you can actually hear when, the second time they start the song, billy and the rest of the band have to jump to keep up with jimmy.

it CAN be three or four beats per minute faster on jimmy's end, because that only adds like a half a beat to a beat and a half to each bar or whatever.

jimmy just needed to pay more attention, i guess.

  • 3 or 4 BPM does NOT add half a beat to each bar. That would be BLATANTLY faster and it would sound awful. 4 BPM, in this case of a 4/4 song, one extra bar would fit inside a minute of the song... easy math.

  • mhmm ;)

  • weird. if anything it sounds like the drums are too slow. its all relative i guess. "3 or 4" beats" billy says. wow. unless the drums come in a whole measure earlier, i don't see a problem. like i said, if anything, the 1st 2 or 3 takes the drums mighta been too SLOW compared to gitar.

  • this is awesome.. where did you get this ? thanks for posting..

  • tension then

  • 70s strat?

  • Yea, I love how it says I love my Mom.

  • is his strat Scalloped there? it looks like it...

  • 0:58 What did the engineer say about the bass drum complaint ? He didn't mention an 808 did he ?

  • awesome

  • great

  • i love this

  • Best band ever in studio rehearsal

    AWESOME!

  • LOL! Look at Billy's guitar! "I love my mom," what a great guy :D

  • the look @ 3:03 says it all.

    been there buddy...

jimmy's not big on tempo, but the way he plays drums is AMAZING.

  • If you listen to all the recent live versions they play it much faster! Jimmy got his way in the end!

  • live is not the same thing..what works live might not work on the record at all.

  • Lol 1:12

  • i want his guitar

  • "allegro" haha.

  • blues version ...hjahaha really cool

  • "You start it."

    "I know I do."

    Bwa ha ha! Chamberlain pwnage!

  • "We're probably not going to record anything like this." LoL

  • haha, the irony :P

  • Comment removed

  • its not tempo its the beat, jimmy was trying a blues beat then changed to a rock beat

  • i have the same problem! i go so fast! :S

    hehehe

  • Hah hah, tempo is always the problem in the band I'm in.

  • cool video

nice to see stuff like this from bands

  • thats the same guitar he used when he was playin geek usa with like 30 clowns on stage

  • just run youre finger lightly on the 6th string from the 1st fret to the 4th fret and strum accordingly, turn youre reverb up to on the amp to get that nice sound on the harmonics

  • Are you in the process of masturbating, you sound like it.

  • ha! you owned that retard!

  • i love you crippled teeth :F

  • lol

"no can you he the vvvvvvvv"

    what?!

  • i CANT DO THOSE FUCKING HARMONIX its pissing me of so much

  • octaves

  • Yeah dummy, octaves, not power chords, the fifth makes a big difference.

  • Jeesh billy carried this band for years

  • thats because they were worth carrying. best band ever

  • They don't perform this song live anymore tis a pity..

  • That funny I seen them play it twice without james

  • I saw them play it oct 9thn2008 so yes they do still play it live. James was ok, but nothing special

  • You saw them play in 5 months?

  • I meant 2007, typo sorry

  • Heh I was just getting on your back, just a joke.

  • james isnt in the band anymore,

  • haha....i speed up too when i drum.maybe jimmy should've had a click track..... did they do that back then? or maybe they think click tracks are lame ..i dunno

  • they didn't use click tracks very often. if you watch vieuphoria, they used a click track a little bit during the siamese dream sessions.

  • I was on the last gig of the european tour in Finland on monday. It was fucking amazing! Can't be loving this band! :)

If you want to see Billy's funny blues jam from gig, check out my profile.

  • Caught the irish leg of it myself..

  • famous last words: "we probably won't record anything like this...."

  • jimmy always speeds up as they go, but he's awesome, so . . .

  • amazing!! priceless ...

  • Lol drummers XD won't shutup when everyone else is talking, I do it too :D

  • Who is billy telling he if off in tempo? Is it Jimmy?

  • yeah

  • I didn't really hear a noticeable speed up... If the tempo did speed up, it sounded natural. Billy seems like a real whanker... I think I understand now why the rest of the band got into drugs. Helps them put up with Adolf Corgan.

  • I noticed it right away, but then again, I've been in bands for years. Billy knows what he's talking about.

  • I've been in bands for years and it doesn't make me some super-god. Anyone can notice it.

  • Not just anyone. I was replying to the guy that said he couldn't notice. I also never said that I was some super-god.

  • spell wanker again..... wait, i gave u the answer.....

  • Hey spell You again... Wait I gave you the answer

  • its texting slang? I dont see an argument in that..... look on your phone and look at all the u's that've been sent to u.....

  • in his defense, if I had to walk around with that face I'd be worse than Corgan and Hitler put together

I would of killed all the jews, not most of them...

  • what?

  • this is good shit
