Man, I don't see why these people didn't wait until the manga was finished before they made the movie. I mean, they could have made it better and creepier if they just had the patience. Personally, I think the movie is ok (before you say something, I DID read the manga) and genuienly creepy, but they could have done better.
:\ Meh. They started off following the manga so well, and then they just ran out of time and couldn't really finish the story right... They should have more carefully picked what they needed to include and leave out...
@Fyrsiel You realize people write movies before they film them, right? You don't "run out of time" in adapting a story unless you're improvising the whole thing. The ending is different b/c the manga was unfinished and the filmmakers were told to come up with their own idea.
@Oecobius33 You must also realize that people can write and film more hours than planned and so then must edit the final product down in order to stay within the desired run-time. The problem is definitely the pacing. The ending was rushed because they had so many sub-plots beginning, but then when it came down to the second half of the movie, when everything needed to be wrapped up, the only solution they could come up with was "Uuuuh, and so then EVERYONE died! The end."
if this movie was a potato it would be bland and it wouldnt live up to my expectations. it would also be filled with cowshit and garnished with taint juice.
Alternative ending: deciding to escape instead of sit there pointlessly while sad music plays, Kirie cycles out of town, while distracting the zombified spiral freaks and snail-men with Twister ice lollies.
the manga is awesome ^^ but i guess they tried their best with the buget they had. not great but a nice movieversion of the manga. manga was waay better anyway
the ending.. i cant believe they just did that like WTF! fail. someone please remake this movie. this manga has so much potential to be a really horrifying movie
I'd like them to go all "Paranoia Agent" and make a miniseries. It doesn't matter if it's live action or anime I'd just like to see the whole story acted out.
The manga implied a demon. The very last part of the third book had a large underground cavern full of spiralsade of people and it ended with the two main characters embracing eachother as they themselves turned into a spiral.
EPIC Fail indeed....dude the whole point of Uzumaki is to have unexplained happenings of spiral....the ending just ruins it. It implies there's a malevolent demon at work....that's not scary any more....
Indeed, fear of the unknown tends to be scarier than something you do know. Well, at least these people didn't f*** it up as bad as the people who did "The Drifting Classroom" movie (heard it was really horrible, but I only saw a brief clip, and I think it really is horrible).
I love how no one ever said "there's a bunch of freaking shit going on that's killing a whole bunch of people, let's leave." And when the two main characters FINALLY got the bright idea to go, they're pretty much instantly killed. Seriously, was the entire town just that dumb?
Good movie till the end. I haven't read the manga yet but this kinda seems like a big plot hole. why did Shuichi just up and out of no where go spiralmaniac?
manga wuz so awesome...this movie not so much...they shud lyk remake it and add in all tha parts they left out...they cud totally pull it off now...graphics wud be way better
@ChoCoLatte1205 If I hadn't read a summary of the film before I watched it, I would have thought the same thing as you, but in every summary I read, it said that the guy with the spiral in his eye was actually Kirie's dad, who drilled himself in the eye. If I'm remembering correctly, in the manga, it was a girl whose crescent shaped scar turned into a spiral-shaped vortex (which you said), but it also swallowed her entire body.
Well I've also read the manga, and after watching the whole movie I can also say that movie was good, but could have been more great if It have been a little more expressive. The manga is an awesome work done by the author, but I'm still very happy that they didn't show some of the parts in the movie for eg"Jack-in-the-box" and "Mosquito" cos they were really Creepy >____<
I have to say, the manga fucked with my mind. The movie might be a "good movie" if it were an original thing, fresh out of someone's brain. Unfortunately, it fails in comparison to the manga. Hell, this shouldn't have been a movie in my opinion. Should've been a miniseries and/or anime.
1:03 Didn't like that subtitle. The 4th chapter's title reads "rinne" and means "cycle of death and rebirth", with the circle sense again on it. In other subtitles it was translated as "transmigration", maybe referring to the fact that the whole town and all the people are turned into other kind of beings.
i know most of us agree this movie was pretty crappy, not to mention that they missed out a lot of 'important' things, like kiries mother and little brother, the "real" ending everyone, who read the manga, was expecting, why the girl at the end looked like a mummy, 'shuichis gone mad!' scenes, etc. but it was scarier. the manga was just creepy. i still vote it 4 or 5 out of 10. i read the manga in like 2 hours. without the unnecesary parts, they could have done the WHOLE story. :) my opinion n_n
Oh, please, enough of comments looking down on this movie. I know that most of you wanted a billion-budgeted & one-week long movie with all those details from the manga, but the atmosphere of this movie is so unique. Weird but haunting, creepy & fun. I can't imagine another movie similar to this one. And I like that open ending...
Wow, where did all the cool parts go? The pregnant woman? the whirl wind gang? the town becoming a spiral, the girl with the spiral on her head? the couple that spiralled together to escape? the climb down to the centre of the spiral? so much missed out!! if i was to advise any one about this film, i would say read the manga, you're just wasting your time on watching this film.
Whoa whoa! Hold on! I'm confused. Is Kirie dead or what? Can anyone tell me because I couldn't tell and I didn't see her body at all. Silly confusing movie!
@sllide very loosely...and by very, i mean very very very very very loosely... they essentially took a couple chapters and the spiral concept, mashed them into a crappy movie that didn't develop anything fully (or even partly really), added some out of place music, and called it a day
It would've been decent if they just summerized the story instead of just taking random parts and adding other unnecessary parts like the mirror history and such. And as for the mirror part I'm guessing that since when you look into a mirror, it kinda seems like your getting dragged it. So, the dad possibly thought that if he adds a mirror on the bottom of the tank he'll continue to swirl. Dx... I don't think that even made sense but I think you get what I kinda mean
LAST. STORY LINE. terrible!!! I liked how they wanted to have romance in the movie however, they missed out on the weirdness!. I really wanted to see those row houses and entangled people and the most bitter-sweet ending!!! but no.... well that's all i can say... fuu~
SECOND yeah good choice of characters! Kirie and Shuichi was awesome, and the snail guy too. They really look like the characters in the manga. The reporter and the jack in the box also were good. So good casting.
FIRST OF ALL wrong choice of chapters. Its cool that medusa and the snails were included, but to make it more horrifying they should've also put in the umbilical cord, the scar and the chaos part rather that focusing on the mystery solving part. There were also parts that are too slow, I believe they can incorporate as much chapters if they cut off the parts when she was running and running at the beginning, and those that doesn't matter.
This would have been awesome if they had focused on one or 2 plot lines instead of jumping back and forth from random parts from the manga. They started a bunch of different plots but never finished or explained any of them.
When watching a movie after having read the book that it originated from first, I always try to remain objective and fair, and I try to see each for their own merits. That said, overall I was disappointed in this film. I found it to be campy and at points the acting was hammy and melodramatic. Such a shame as the source material was genuinely disturbing and very graphic. I know, I just broke my own rule. Not bad, but it definitely doesn't live up to its full potential.
Well I think we can safely say that the Japanese have a twisted imagination. Pun intended. =) Anyway that was trippy movie. Pretty crazy stuff going on.
Shuichi wasn't that depressive as I thought he was gonna be, I would say the manga was better. And i was hoping to see some gangster effects, but I guess it was alright... It might be nice if the girl and the boy kissed at the end and twisted together or something like in the manga.
This movie was... okay. Not amazing but okay. The budget is something that really needed to be taken into consideration. I believe it could've been better, but it was nice to see a movie based on one of my favorite mangas. At least they didn't butcher it and they had a reasonable excuse for the ending. I would love to see this remade into a movie series (because all of the stories into one movie is too much) but i doubt the fanbase is big enough for a remake. :/
I'm really disappointed. They did an okay job with putting some parts together so it fits together like a movie, but they left out and changed so many things. Like Kiries mom is alive? And she has a brother?
It's shitty that they had such a small budget, cause the effects could've been way better, and that would've actually made the movie scary.. cause it wasn't. At all.
But I'm kind of glad that they left out the pregnant ladies. That part of the manga was fucked up. D:
Wow, it left out so much from the manga. Like the girl with the crescent scar, the lighthouse, the mosquito pregnant ladies, the whirlwinds that the people could blow/all the row house parts. She didn't even have a brother OR mother in the movie wtf? and they added the Shuichi part. SMH.
@TokiShirabaki yeah man I tell you why it failed .Lack of High Quality special effects and the length of the movie this should have clock in two and a half hours.
honestly, what freaked me out the most out of the whole movie was the ending. i kept expecting the corpses to move. and the way the camera was moving... and that creepy tune thing that kept playing didn't help. D:
this definitly needs remade. it was okay as something to watch but the manga was far better. and someone said there also that the film was made before they finished writing the manga. why couldnt they have just waited and then then they would have had a decent movie.
I don't know why, but for some reason I found this to be the scariest movie I've ever seen. The story could have been a little better, but it also could have been a lot worse. Good original concept though. The only major complaint I have is the English subtitles were obviously written by somebody who didn't speak English as their first language. They were pretty bad at some points. Overall I'd probably give this movie a 4/5.
@xXShayLynnXx They really couldn't have followed the manga that closely with the budget they had. The whole last third of the manga was so crazy I don't think there's any way they could have done most of it and I didn't really care for those parts of the manga anyways; to me it started to seem like the manga writers were just coming up with stuff as they went along making it progressively worse. I do think they should have included some parts that they left out like the spiral faced girl.
I knew the German voice-over version before and noticed 2 crucial differences in this:
- Kirie says "I live in Kurouzu" (present tense) in the narration. So it's clear that she did not get away from the curse, but is still able to tell the story despite the frozen time in the end. This gives the movie a paradox ending much in the spirit of the manga.
- Ch. 4 is entitled "Wiedergeburt" (rebirth).
Can anyone translate this, or the research of Tomura, from the original? I don't know any japanese.
ok just to recap everybody in the town just becomes interested in spirals, that i get but whats the reason behind it? What happened to the town after, who the hell started it and what happened to the snails =.=. Gawd it was interesting but i might as well read the manga(if it has been finished alrdy) although the gore factor was there XP.
@emexremi damn calm down kirie never dies not in the manga and not in the movie i thought she died in the movie because of the picture of 1:19 but no that girl there is another one
btw why do you call everyone dumbass is that the only insult you know ?
@pimpollito18 haha yoo is a funny little mang what are you stupid is somethin askin a question likes that, everybody got different insult fuckin mexican
@emexremi LOL you where stupid enough to lose like 10 seconds of your life because you entered at my channel thanks for the support you gave me one channel visit thanks a lot ignorant fool
@pimpollito18 [SPOILER ALERT] well, technically, it never tells you EXACTLY what happened. what I got from the manga's ending was that the curse finally consumed kirie and shuichi, and they died together. so sweet ; w ;
this movie needs to be remade and the people need to take their time on it. the beginning was good until the middle to end. it's like the people who made this were close to some deadline and had to rush like maniacs so they just put random things together.
Gotta say, for a horror film it didn't freak me out that much.
But I liked it. I mean, of course the manga is better, that's always the case, but the manga to me was sort of jumbled around, so I liked how they added in the stories such as the girl with the curly hair and the snail people so it all sort of fit. The ending was sort of... odd, and they could've done that better.
But overall, I don't think it was a bad movie at all. ^.^
Oh my, You have never had the honour of watching a good movie, have you? Because if you had, you would see, that this is a sigrace to the art of filmmaking. The plot makes no sense, the subplots lead nowhere and it has shit like exploding cigarettes. And the worst thing: This is supposed to be a horrorfilm. But it fails to deliver any kind of horror, dread or fear. And I'm not even comparing to the manga. This movie is terrible in its own right.
And then, there's the acting. Oh god, a mentally handicapped baby could act better than Shuichi's actor. And the other actors are only barely better. THis is a clearly 0 out of 5 stars for the movie.
I'm rather disappointed. I mean, I know it wouldn't be easy to recreate the manga, but they didn't even explain what the source of the spiral curse was.
And, what the hell? I'd be fine with everything else, but... what the hell did they do with the ending? The manga ended a little more romantic, a little more deep. Even a little more happy!
Man, I don't see why these people didn't wait until the manga was finished before they made the movie. I mean, they could have made it better and creepier if they just had the patience. Personally, I think the movie is ok (before you say something, I DID read the manga) and genuienly creepy, but they could have done better.

Also the fact that they didn't include my favorite part with all the twisters.

@KayHeL Shuichi is not a good choice too

FIRST OF ALL wrong choice of chapters. Its cool that medusa and the snails were included, but to make it more horrifying they should've also put in the umbilical cord, the scar and the chaos part rather that focusing on the mystery solving part. There were also parts that are too slow, I believe they can incorporate as much chapters if they cut off the parts when she was running and running at the beginning, and those that doesn't matter.

@KayHeL hmmmmm. The chapter is all in happen in once. i don't know why. It get me fucking confuse

This would have been awesome if they had focused on one or 2 plot lines instead of jumping back and forth from random parts from the manga. They started a bunch of different plots but never finished or explained any of them.

But what i relly want to see is a liveaction GYO movie. Its like Jaws and Night of the Living Dead and Akira ROLLED INTO ONE!

Not bad, but it definitely doesn't live up to its full potential.
erntar09 1 year ago
They shouldve made like, a bunch of episodes, instead of one film, and put more effort into it. :/

0:34 - 0:41 THE RING
I'm really disappointed. They did an okay job with putting some parts together so it fits together like a movie, but they left out and changed so many things. Like Kiries mom is alive? And she has a brother?
It's shitty that they had such a small budget, cause the effects could've been way better, and that would've actually made the movie scary.. cause it wasn't. At all.
But I'm kind of glad that they left out the pregnant ladies. That part of the manga was fucked up. D:
kamehameha30 1 year ago
Wow, it left out so much from the manga. Like the girl with the crescent scar, the lighthouse, the mosquito pregnant ladies, the whirlwinds that the people could blow/all the row house parts. She didn't even have a brother OR mother in the movie wtf? and they added the Shuichi part. SMH.

this definitly needs remade. it was okay as something to watch but the manga was far better. and someone said there also that the film was made before they finished writing the manga. why couldnt they have just waited and then then they would have had a decent movie.
MrWizzzarrd 1 year ago
I don't know why, but for some reason I found this to be the scariest movie I've ever seen. The story could have been a little better, but it also could have been a lot worse. Good original concept though. The only major complaint I have is the English subtitles were obviously written by somebody who didn't speak English as their first language. They were pretty bad at some points. Overall I'd probably give this movie a 4/5.
PyroNinja713 1 year ago
@PyroNinja713 The story was ALOT better, this movie is quite an insult to the manga it originated from.
xXShayLynnXx 1 year ago
@xXShayLynnXx They really couldn't have followed the manga that closely with the budget they had. The whole last third of the manga was so crazy I don't think there's any way they could have done most of it and I didn't really care for those parts of the manga anyways; to me it started to seem like the manga writers were just coming up with stuff as they went along making it progressively worse. I do think they should have included some parts that they left out like the spiral faced girl.
PyroNinja713 1 year ago
Well, maybe its not a copy exactly of the manga but c´mon... this its ver creepy, holy crap XD
Ariota 1 year ago

This should have been a trilogy movie. Like Saw was? That would have been so much more epic. The manga is so freaky, but this wasn't. -____-

this movie needs to be remade and the people need to take their time on it. the beginning was good until the middle to end. it's like the people who made this were close to some deadline and had to rush like maniacs so they just put random things together.
chibimeanie 1 year ago
Gotta say, for a horror film it didn't freak me out that much.
But I liked it. I mean, of course the manga is better, that's always the case, but the manga to me was sort of jumbled around, so I liked how they added in the stories such as the girl with the curly hair and the snail people so it all sort of fit. The ending was sort of... odd, and they could've done that better.
But overall, I don't think it was a bad movie at all. ^.^
Thanks for posting this~!

@Punkness93
Nichtschwert 1 year ago
@Punkness93
And then, there's the acting. Oh god, a mentally handicapped baby could act better than Shuichi's actor. And the other actors are only barely better. THis is a clearly 0 out of 5 stars for the movie.
Anyway: Thanks for the upload, thisisark.
Nichtschwert 1 year ago
I'm rather disappointed. I mean, I know it wouldn't be easy to recreate the manga, but they didn't even explain what the source of the spiral curse was.
And, what the hell? I'd be fine with everything else, but... what the hell did they do with the ending? The manga ended a little more romantic, a little more deep. Even a little more happy!
This needs a remake. Like, now.
