This is not emo or "Pop" punk. Infact, i have a problem with the term "Emo" it's far too easily attatched to too many kinds of modern music. A STUPID label. People are so simply entertained by explaining that which cannot be comprehended by their cynical minds with labels. Grow up people. This is some good music. Not that teenie bopper shit u hear now days.
Ya'll are funny. Emo?! Punk?! Maybe I missed the "cool, kid punk rock emo hipster boat" but who fucking cares -- labeling great music -- great art in general is for people who need to somehow feel others understand them. So crawl onto to your emo boat full of punk rock you've condemned to the 1970's -- live in whatever label makes you most comfortable -- that is what life is all about.......
I have trouble calling this emo. It's a common label people give Oberst's work, but I thought one of the key components of emo was sensitive, emotionally expressive lyrics. I don't know of any song on this album with lyrics like that. If anything, I would call it indie punk or alternative/melodic punk.
Just my two cents worth. Call it what you want, it's still great. I fucking love Desaparecidos, this whole album is amazing.
@s8terblood11 Sorry, didn't mean to say there's no feeling in his voice. Just when I think of emo, I think of Finch and Dashboard Confessional, something with a sadder, pained tone to it. Desa's lyrics sound angry and frustrated, with the perfect amount of sarcasm. No matter what you call it, this band kicks (or kicked) ass
@s8terblood11 Haha we're on the same page here. The emo label has such a negative stigma to it I don't like using it on bands I really like. But like I said, who cares what you call it, it still rocks.
@s8terblood11 that was the whole issue when the term "emocore" or emotive hardcore first came up in 1985. ian mackaye and guy [picniotio](so butchered. if i had a faster connection id look it up). they basically started the genre, but hated the term. up until then hardcore had been mostly societal or political, more outward.
they began the movement towards more post hardcore sounds and the acceptance of more personal, inward lyrics, even amorous(which was entirely unheard of in hardcore punk previously). id say desaparecidos fits right in with bands like embrace and fugazi in that early post hardcore feel. emotive and outward too.
emo was just a word thrown annoyingly at various post-hardcore sounds whenever it slowed down a little and became more inward emotional. then you had bands that just outright epitomized that movement like cap'n jazz(which incidentally is the best band in the world), and others that drew off its evolved 90s sound, combined more alternative rock influences for a more pop friendly brand new genre that would get stuck with the floating label. *cont
*cont (sunny day real estate, occasionally considered the first emo band; 9 years after the word sprung up all over revolution summer in dc). its just the folksiness of the whole thing. like playing telephone. i dunno. lotta good music out there. lot of different directions. like what the hell is post rock anyway? i was convinced i knew, but i don't.
wait im dumb its piccioto. see i didnt even have to look that up. guy piccioto awesome musician. listen to For Want Of by Rites Of Spring, you will agree instantly. sorry my uh bad typing. it's bad. i don't know why. er ill go to bed.
@s8terblood11 no yr missing the point. emo lyrics have a depression based theme. this whole album is about anti-consumerism and anti-corporate expansion. which is pretty damn punk to me. i agree that I would classify it as Indie Punk. Maybe Post-pop punk but not emo. his band Commander Venus was more emo than this but even then idk if thats what id call them. the presence of emotion does not make it emo. I would say a lot of NIN songs are FULL of anger + frustration but id never call him emo.
@s8terblood11 and come on was the insult neccessary? im not calling you stupid. just trying to have a discussion jeeze, i mean we all like the same band here.
This fucking album has not aged a bit. With the exception of claiming that war is just pushing a button, it's pretty much all as relevant now as it was in 2003 or 2 or whenever it came out. Shit.
emo means emotional. any good band is"emo" if u think about. The term emo never even came up until the 80's or maybe even later and i feel like a lot of good bands get a bad rep because of the stigma attached to the label "emo."(i blame the fans for that) Emo should not even exist. All it is, is hardcore/punk with a different style of vocals and lyrics..
@tonybones666 You have no idea what emo is/was but youre right that people shouldnt judge a band because of the bad stigma around the term. Also this band isnt emo at all.
@s8terblood11 Im not gonna argue what emo is cause thats beating a dead horse. I was just saying it wasnt always a broad term that just meant anything emotional, it actually does have a specific history. The word and meaning has been raped so much since the early 80s though that youre right its pretty much a musical adjective now.
Thank you for posting this video but this was NOT an "Emo Rock band" the where a political punk/indie/rock band nothing about this band is emo YES bright eyes is emo NO Desaparecidos are not none the less thank you for posting this please change that tho <3
@justinpistols you dont fucking know me, dont call me a fucking idiot. fucking chill. its the god damn internet. we both love Desaperacidos and Conor Oberst. who gives a fuck what genre it is.
"they say it's murder on your folk career to make a rock record with the disappeared"
I can't put into words what this music makes me feel. I know that sounds cliche, but I don't know how else to say it. Everything Conor does is beautiful.
i hate the other desaparecidos with the horrible thumbnails!!!
